Should pay him by games played.$25 million over $162 games is $154,321 per game. Tell Joe that's exactly what we'll pay him,$154,321 per GAME PLAYED. That will save us some money. lol
With his average being 132 games per year (pretty high number for a catcher) this would still come out to $20,370,372 per season. If the Twins are lucky, they might be able to get him for close to that number.

Did Jerry Bell just tell us that the Twins didn't really want to sign Hunter or Santana? Or Rod Carew for that matter?
We picked up on the same quote. It's very disheartening. Although a lot of people feel that Mauer will not be signed to an extension, it's tough to imagine next season with Mauer playing else where. Between the Yankees and the Red Sox, it would be to Boston that Mauer would travel. Victor Martinez played a lot of 1st base last season.

A few people thought that Santana and Hunter had both peaked and were on their way down hill. No one can make the same argument about Mauer. He could conceivably have an even better season than this one. Santana has peaked and may never be the dominating pitcher he once was, but Hunter is playing as well as he ever has. The sad news is in describing what the Twins got for these players: nothing for Hunter and very little for Santana unless Hardy pans out.

The most important element in this equation is that fact that Ron Shapiro is Mauer's agent. He takes a more organic, cerebral approach to negotiations that other agents don't offer for their clients. Shapiro masterfully worked a deal that kept Kirby in a Twins uniform, leaving a lucrative offer from the Red Sox on the table. Shapiro and Mauer will consider the emotional bank accounts that need to be withdrawn from and deposited into on both sides. In the end, Mauer will sign with the Twins after some heavily published - abeit light - flirting with the Yankees, Red Sox and Angels. Shapiro is a brilliant negotiater and a man of true integrity, in a business littered with scumbags. Mauer will, without a shred of doubt, retire as a Twins legend.

First off, Joe and his agent can not even talk to another club right now as he is under contract with the Twins and that would be tampering on the other teams part. Secondly, you are right about Shapiro, he is not like Boras so I am confident that they will get something worked out before Joe ever hits free agency. The Twins will pay Joe to keep him they just will not overpay to keep him. Santana wanted out of here and Torii didn't see the Twins making an effort to improve so he left, that is changing now.

sign Crede to another incentive laden contract. When he is healty there are few better fielding 3rd baseman in the league..plus he has great power. They got him for only 2.5 M last season, I say let's do that again. Playing on grass should help ease his day to day back pain...SIGN HIM NOW!!!!!!

Ahhh. So they really didn't want to keep Santana or Hunter. As far as Garza, I have heard they had some problems with him and probably did want to get rid of him.
But anyways, I do hope they sign Mauer to an extension. They are in big trouble if they don't. It's just too bad the playing field is not level compared to the Yankees and Bosox. Signing Mauer to that obscene amt of money will hurt the Twins in signing and/or keeping other stars in the future. The problem with smaller market teams.
as I have said before, there is no "level playing field needed"....why?...the Pohlads ARE the richest owners in ALL of pro sports..so they CAN afford him IF they are willing to open those cob webbed wallets of theirs.....

Mauer is good as gone. No way the Twins sign him for 25 mil a year, not for a injury prone light hitting catcher, not gonna happen.

Twins will not be able to sign Mauer, of course, but they will spin the matter as one of having made their best efforts but just couldn't afford him without seriously affecting their ability to field a competitive team, that is, spending too much on Mauer with little less to fund the other players. The Twins will claim that they tried their darndest and came just that close but couldn't get the deal done as Mauer wanted too much money or whatever. Kind of easy to predict based upon their past performances with such things.

Why should Bell be nervous? Joe certainly isn't the first to be trained in Minnesota and leave for where the money is and won't be the last. Started years ago with Carew while Griffith was owner. Pohlad's old and new seem to have the same philosophy. "I can't stay rich if i'm paying a guy that much, besides the stadium has already been built and the fans will come anyway." Enjoy you're world series championships in New York, Joe. That's just one reason why this is the minnie apple and the Yankees are in the big apple.

You lied about Mauer hitting 30 home runs in a season because you are a dishonest person with questionable character in addition to being a poor speller.
