I also believe in the freedom of the press/speech however we are only hearing one side, the boy and his mother's. Have you not noticed that the Lakeport School Dist./High School Admin. has not posted here or written their own letter to the editor etc? Why is that? Because they are held to the highest degree of discretion and confidentiality when students are involved! Yet this boy and his mother (in my opinion) have commented libel against the LPSD's HS Admin. Perhap those Administrators should be contacting their own lawyers and mount a libel suit against this family. You see it should go both ways but being public/state employees they are considered "agents" of the of the school district and anything they might say in their defense could bring serious ramifications to the district. So can't you see that the HS Admin. is being "bullied" because the boy and his mother have no accountablity for their words yet the HS Admin./LPSD has to sit and suffer in silence! GBtheUSA wrote: <quoted text> Interesting thought, but where is it written that freedom of speech is bullying? And freedom of the press has always been something I've treasured in America. Just because you don't agree with Chance's supporters is no reason to stop the open lines of communications. If you and others believe it's "overblown" you should continue to post your points of view. I don't know this kid personally but I do support him, that does not make me a bully, it just means that I have a different point of view. Calling others that don't agree bullies is kind of a way of trying to shame them from speaking their minds, don't you think? You post your thoughts, we'll post our thoughts, and no one is a bully for doing so. That's what's so great about freedom of speech and the free press!GB the USA

Quit it with the "We" pay their wages. So do the rest of us. Getting rid of admin & teachers, is NO easy task. They are "protected" also. FYI: If they want my "tax" money to go to a $10,000 event for unity, I will FIGHT IT! We have lost teachers, aids, staff and important programs that effect our chidren's EDUCATION-that is what they are going to school for firstmost! The bully crap should stop! And by "bully" I mean actual bullying, not booing. That DOES NOT NEED TO BE ADDRESSED! Chance stated he has opted out of the rallies so what the heck is the issue on "that" part. Leave it be. Anyone else who feels like that can also opt out.

respect is earned

As a senior at Clear Lake High School, I would like to make one point clear: we are not “barbarians.” A barbarian is a savage or someone without any refinement or education. As Chance has pointed out in his article, bullying is wrong. I’m sure everyone would agree with that statement, but when there is no bullying going on then what is wrong? We are a very civilized school where most people get along, no matter the grade level. I have been attending Clear Lake for four years now, and I believe it is the best school around the lake; we have the highest state test scores, great athletics, a kind and generous faculty, and it is an environment where most students are involved and get along. There has been no freshman hazing this year whatsoever, and the only reason one person has stood out so much is because he has made a big deal out of nothing. If Chance is so worried about the bullying and protecting his classmates, then why haven’t there been any names stated and why is the biggest issue out of everything having public sympathy? Even the other freshman believe he isn’t fulfilling his job as Freshman Class Representative. He has referred to himself as “the next Rosa Parks” in his online blog. He believes he is standing up for his other classmates and making his own life miserable, while the others are enjoying their high school years. If Chance says he will respect those that respect him, then why is he rude to those who are polite to him? Why does he act arrogant, condescending, and make comments indicating that he is intellectually elite to students, faculty, and administration to those that have tried to befriend him? This is not even character becoming of a good person. The only person that I have even heard of being taped to a flag pole was my freshman year and he was in on the joke. Not a single student has been put in a trash can this year. It has all been reported to sensationalize his article. He needs to be responsible in his reporting and held accountable for how he treats others. Fairness has been another issue that has been brought up a lot. If you’ve been in a position long enough you should get certain perks like senior parking, which was one thing that Chance wanted to get rid of because of age discrimination. What he failed to report is that senior parking is not just for seniors. Participants are selected by a drawing and have to pay for their spot (this is an innovative idea by the high school to raise funds considering the economic difficulties they have been confronted with over the last couple of years). He also wanted to revise the prom and senior trip. He also didn’t mention that the seniors fund their own trip. In closing, our school has a safe and friendly environment. It’s sad that one person has caused fear to parents and students alike due to his continuous comparisons of CLHS to several of the high school tragedies. Many feel this will plant ideas that would have not been considered before. His attempts at being a martyr without cause has overwhelmingly resulted in more negative results than positive.

I would like to add a quote from one of Chance's posts to attempt to clarify some of the points that have been made. This is a response that Chance gave a person that asked him what this whole issue was about. "There are kids that hate school, because of bullies. This isn't just about booing, like people are making it out to be. I'm standing up for those kids who hate going to school every day because they're picked on, myself included. These people that are ignorantly condemned to being treated like this for the rest of their high school careers do not deserve their punishment for being smart, or not dressing according to fashion standards, or for thinking outside of the box. These kids are usually the most successful in life and should be treated with a little more respect. It's plain decency to not shove someone every time they walk by, or to call them a fag every time you see them. It's stupid and needs to stop. Oh, and this issue has nothing to do with me trying to take away Senior rewards like everyone is trying to blame me. That's just the administration's threatened response. I have no intention of taking away these rewards. Thank you for asking, Chance"

The difference between booing and clapping is that booing is a negative message and clapping is a positive one. I can not believe after hearing more and more from the parents that any sort of booing to any child or group of children at clhs is tolerated. Regardless if they are freshman, sophomores, juniors or seniors.
I went to a school where all the grades clapped for everyone and no one was ever booed at. That would of resulted in you being dragged out of the gym and taken to the principals office. It was just not a kind thing to do.
I can not believe that this has been reinforced at this school for years. Maybe next time instead of making a game out of trying to out boo your fellow classmates to make them feel inferior you could make a contest out of trying to show which class has the best sportsmanship and concern for their fellow school mates. It's not that wild of a concept!
And as for having another team boo your kids, That shouldn't be encouraged also. That's just not something we ever did at football games too. By not taking a stand against this type of behavior everyone is just reinforcing the bad sportsmanship antics we've been seeing in the media these resent years.
Does your school boo the apposing team as they come out on the field or vice-versa?. There is a difference in booing a good play by the opposing team and booing their kids as they come out on or off the field! Boy wouldn't that take the opposing team by surprise if you did the descent thing and clapped as they come out on the field? And no I did not go to a fairytale school in lala land. It was a school in Vallejo. They just expected a high code of ethics and morals.
Just can’t understand why people don’t see the wrong in booing a kid or children. Come on folks!

#248 If an adult gets booed at no one cares. That's because their an adult. There is just something about adults sending the message that it's ok for kids and adults to boo other kids. My kids have been in sports and in scouts and we've always taught them that it was bad sportsmanship to boo anyone! And when we first started playing youth sports it was made clear that this kind of behavior was not to be tolerated. That any adult or kid that booed someone would be asked to leave. And doing it to a whole group of kids makes it just that much more sleazy. Kids and adults booing a whole group of kids is just wrong. How is that a positive kind of behavior for the parents, youth, and staff of clhs to be teaching their kids, even if it was meant to be all in good fun. It would be nice to see this school take part in a good sportsmanship type workshop that evolved the kids and the staff. The M-town Wrestling Coach had the right idea, my kid goes to MHS and loves it there. their not a jock or a cheerleader, yet they still enjoy their school. That says a lot. post #7 M-town Wrestling Coach We held a Challenge Day for our 8th graders here in M-Town 2 years ago. I was fortunate enough to be one of the adults taking part. I HIGHLY recommend it to every district out there. I witnessed true compassion and empathy that day amongst children who were horrible to each other. Keep trying to convince your school. It was worth every second and every penny. http://www.challengeday.org/our_program/schoo ...

So do the sophomores and juniors. Why can't people see it's done in fun, not to harm anyone or their feelings. It's called freedom of speech and expression just like Chance is showing...I agree with an earlier post, lets stop feeding into the back and forth. Maybe we should have a annonymous survey done for the students and see if they feel the same as Chance, that would put an end to all of this! Oh and food for thought as someone pointed out to me today...what will Chance do when he reaches the "real" world where in some business companies there is assigned parking to certain people "hire a lawyer and call it discrimination" all this is doing is setting him up for big disappointments when he gets older and his parents aren't there to bail him out! of course it's just my opinion. I wish nothing but luck for you Chance you and your fellow classmates should be gaining the best education you can to exceed in life and while doing that have fun, for these memories you make in high school will one day be something hopefully you can look back on and cherish. There are a lot of things done in fun in the name of freedom of speech that hurt people's feelings, when the feelings that are hurt are our kids, adults and other parents, you would think, would want to pay a little bit more attention! The school survey is a great idea, let's just make sure everyone is handed the survey, not just those of you at clhs who don't agree with Chance.
