Feb 12, 2013 Full story: KARE-TV Minneapolis 61

A federal judge has overturned a ruling that canceled the Washington Redskins trademark, finding there was insufficient evidence to conclude the name is disparaging to American Indians.

Oh come on now, grow up people. Don't Indians call us palefaces? I've got no problem with that. They should be honored that a team dedicated its name to them.

Some may do so, but the majority do not.
Look at it this way, how would the world react if there was a team named the darkies, or the chinks, or the greasers. The name is offensive and harkens back to the days of Manifest Destiny, when white America slaughtered the native population and used that word as a demeaning, derogatory way to describe the American Indians.

Are there actually any "Redskins" left in Washington DC?

Not anymore demeaning or derogatory than dropping a cool $1,000 at the Casino, huh?

Yeah, I am sure that there are still some Native Americans there. So what is your point.

So, explain how it is demeaning or derogatory for someone to spend money in a casino owned and operated by Native Americans. Is it also demeaning or derogatory to do the same in Las Vegas, or Atlantic city. Is it demeaning or derogatory to spend money on the lottery.
Quite a reach there.
Voluntarily entering and spending your own money in a casino does not equate to racism.

Now's a hell of a time to be worrying about offending the "American redskin" after evrything else we've done to them.
Besides it doesn't get any worse than 'redneck hippie', offensive, demeaning, and derogatory.
LMAO

Well, I'm a fairly tall guy and I'm offended by the NY Giants name - do you think I would stand any chance at a law suit there?

Btw - my neighbor is an ex-Somolian pirate - he's putting together a civil suit against the Buccaneers, Raiders and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

I never played the race card - you did (make a mental note of that).

And I never said who is was demeaning to, did I?

I choose to call myself that, therefore, it is not offensive or demeaning to me.
Using your logic, then after everything that was done to the black man, they should not be offended and we should not worry about a team called the darkies.
Or we could say the same for n@ gger.
They can say it among themselves, about themselves and they do not consider it demeaning or derogatory, but others do.

ok, I'll play, what does having a casino have to do with the offensive name of a football team. What does spending money in a casino have to do with a demeaning and derogatory name of a football team.

I don't look at the world in black and white like you do.

This is 2012, not 1954 Alabama. This is a discussion about a football team name - not about blacks versus whites.

Go to the Racism thread is you want to argue with KKK members. This is Offbeat - lighten up.

As a footnote, however, the Florida State Seminoles got an ok to continue using their mascot by the Seminole Nation of Florida.

If you're not an Indian, you have no say so in the matter - one way or another.

The Redskins have played more than 1,000 games since their establishment in 1932.

I wonder why nobody hasn't said anything till now?

They named the team in reference to past cultures of Washington. I'm certain no offense was intended. And where do you get off accusing white America of slaugtering American Indians? Even an Indian will tell you that most Indians who were slaughtered were done so by other Indians in wars between tribes. Now be a good little hippie and speak less of that which you are unaware.

Do you squeek when you walk too?

Lighten up - if it were that demeaning, the team would've been challenged to change it back in 1932 - why wait 80 years to decide that one of the oldest sports franchises in the United States has a derogatory name?

Btw, my brother's alma mater - Marquette, had to ditch the name "Warriors" in 1994 because some asshat who wasn't an Indian at all thought it was derogatory.

In 2004, Marquette began to consider changing the name back to Warriors, and conducted a poll that showed 92 percent of alumni and 62 percent of students "identified" with that nickname. However, the Board of Trustees ignored the results of the poll on the grounds that previous logos had been disrespectful to Native Americans, and changed the nickname to simply "Gold". An intensely negative reaction by students, faculty, alumni, and fans led to yet another series of votes, which eventually pitted "Golden Eagles" against "Hilltoppers". Respondents were told in advance that write-in votes for "Warriors" would not be tabulated, although those results were later released, and "Golden Eagles" was restored in June 2005.

Just like you don't like the government getting all up in your business, if you're not an Indian trustee - stay out of Indian affairs.
