<quoted text>It's sad to think about it but isn't that about what gas was just in February? I think on my trip to Florida the highest I paid was $3.07 and like $2.79 was the average. I'll have to check my trip log but I think that was the price just 3 months ago.
Even better, we were in Yellowstone last July and thought $3.35 a gallon for diesel was absolutely outrageous in the middle of the park. Guess the joke is on me, now.:(

Not so sure about the trip we have planned to the Southwest this year.

Remember when there was a solid middle class in America? I think I'm going to reseach how wide the gap between rich and poor is now. My husband is disabled, but it wasn't until recently when I truly felt what poor is. We have alot of resolve and like they say when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. What bothers me the most is the people in Michigan actually look scared and we can't give in to that. Scared people are beaten people who readily give up their rights.

In my house, we just switched out our gas hot water heater for an electric hot water heater. We also bought a very nice big electric skillet and a bunch of charcoal so we don't have to use our gas stove. We turned off our thermostat so the heat doesn't kick on. It is warm enough to leave it off. Even on these chilly nights it hasn't gotten below 65 degrees inside the house. So right now in our house we are not using one single ounce of gas. I realize it is not the same gas as used in a vehicle, but I figure any little bit helps.

By the way, my husband and I are arguing about if it is really cheaper to use an electric hot water heater than gas. Does anyone know?

If you figure out, it is far more expensive to heat and cook with electric vs. gas. Natural gas has gone up along with other fossil fuel prices but it is still far more efficient that using electric. BTW, are you sure that Charcoal use indoors is safe? I'd think I'd want to have that checked with CO detector or meter first. IMHO...

The gas water heater is actually cheaper, especially as it gets older. The elements lose efficiency over time. I had one place that I rented with an old electric water heater that I pulled the fuses on it until I wanted to take a shower. Then I would replace the fuses and wait for the water to heat up. That made a huge difference in my electric bill.

By the way, LMS, I don't know what you have been doing with you curtains, but even with the furnace turned on, it only runs once in a while at night and not at all during the day as long as I have all the curtains and blinds open, especially on the south side of the house. That would help you stay warmer with your furnace shut off, especially on sunny days, but even on some cloudy days.

Nah, I think the 4 dollar gas thing was a self fulfilling prophecy. I've been hearing about 4 dollar gas since I graduated from high school, I swear.

It may take awhile, but every bubble bursts. It was the Tech bubble around 2000-2001, the housing bubble last year, and eventually the commoditiy bubble will too burst. It may take a year or two, but eventually speculators look for the newest money maker out there.

Goldman Sachs has also been predicting 7 dollar corn and 16 dollar soybeans. Their famous commodity bulls, have been ever since I started in this business. I know it stinks, but this too shall pass.

We actually have a lot of windows in our house and most of the blinds/curtains are always open. I still have not turned on the heat and the house has still stayed decent. Usually we would still have the heat on especially for night time but in an effort to cut costs, we are learning to sacrifice a little. It certainly won't k.ill us to learn how to keep the house a little cooler. Maybe this next winter we can get by leaving the temp down a little bit more than usual. I am still kind of bummed about the electric water heater costing more, though. Because everything I read online said the opposite. But I am certainly going to have to do some more research on it. And start comparing the bills. If it does cost a lot more, we can always switch it back over to the gas water heater.
