Absolutely correct here, Karen. The suspect's father is an irresponsible gun owner that casts a negative light upon all of the legal and law abiding firearms owners.
The suspect's father said he had the AK47 locked up in a room but his kid broke a window to gain access to the firearm. Now, how secure is a room containing firearms, with a window that can be broken and used as access, to obtain and use those firearms in the commission of a crime? The father is absolutely reckless, irresponsible and negligent in this matter, and he should be prosecuted under any law(s) that may apply.
OK, chances of it being an "AK47" are slim to likely nil. An AK47 is an ATF Class III firearm and costs several thousand dollars and a $200+/- Federal tax to own. An AK47 is also has the capability to fire *fully automatic*.

I don't care what the gun looked like - looks are irrelevant to operation. The media calls anything wood and blued-steel and "AK47" and anything black-plastic and parkerized steel an "M16". Aesthetics and media sensation do not make something so. I'd make a safe bet the gun was a semi-auto only clone, such as a WASR-## model. It may *look* AK-ish but thats as similar as it gets..its not an AK47, its a WASR-## model.

Next point, if you're indeed for-real your son is a brave individual who did the right thing and should be commended for having the guts to take down the criminal. If people did that whenever someone commits crime, other incidents may turn out like this one with no one seriously injured and the criminal in custody.

Finally - you already admitted the 16y-o broke in to steal the rifle. That is a crime. The father should not be charged for the kids action in that case. If it had been some bum off the street breaking in, it should be no different - the owner cannot be responsible if someone breaks in to steal something. Breaking in a home, breaking into a room,(especially to steal a firearm) is a crime. Its called burglary, or breaking and entering, or home invasion depending on specifics. How would you feel, if some guy broke in took your keys and drove your car out of the garage and crashed, killing people. Do you think you should be responsible for not securing a deadly weapon (automobile)? This is no different..personal property in private property is secured properly. Last time I checked breaking in or stealing property is illegal. Only the criminal is responsible for their action. If the gun was hanging over the fireplace thats one thing - it was locked in a room; that is secured. Maybe not as much as was needed, but it was secured to the point the kid had to break-in to get it.

Its obvious the kid needs mental help and should be sitting a long time in a mental health facility and prison.

Ah and one final note. As far as exposing kids to guns - its worth noting most of these shootings are committed by city-types who have little firearm experience. If a child is raised to RESPECT and treat firearms for what they are and the safe and proper use of them from a young age, this stuff is less likely to happen. Kids get too many ideas from hollywood and the stigma attached to firearms. If they're around them and taught right, they won't be committing crimes with them.

You might want to work on your reading comprehension before you go insulting other peoples intelligence.

No he shouldn't had no gun. No child should have a darn gun whether for hunting or not. This is sickening. Teach your kids how to help people instead of teaching them how to handle guns. People really have their priorities all screwed up. That child is 16 years old and if he has access to an AK-47 and it belonged to his parents then guess what? They should be charged. People are sick with this gun mess. I don't beleive in teaching you KID a freaking KID how to hunt with no darn deadly weapon. That to should be considered child abuse. Once they get OF AGE then fine but a kid? Cmon people.

Thats a darn lie because most of the kids who know how to handle a gun and have access to them are shooting their darn schools up because they are being bullied. Nobody can tell me a child should be taught how to use a gun because many times they become fascinated with firearms and thats not a good thing. It's sad that you would encourage a child learning about firearms. Yes teach them the dangers of a firearm but then to put one in their hand kind of defeats the purpose to me. I teach my kids about firearms and make sure they are aware of the dangers of a firearm. I also make sure they know they should not be holding a gun or be anywhere near anyone with a gun. One reason I don't allow my kids at their friends house because there are people out there who think like you and I'll be damned if one day one of the parents aren't home and the kid decides to play with a gun and my child is gone all because the parents thought their kid was mature enough to know where the weapon is. Anyways......KEEP FIREARMS AWAY FROM YOUR KIDS. IT'S THE ONLY SAFE WAY OUT HERE. KIDS ARE NOT MATURE NO MATTER WHO THEY BELONG TO.

2 close,
Your son disarmed this kid. well first congratulate him. then i must ask, is he a firearm expert? are you? It is nearly impossible to get a fully automatic ak-47 when you are 16 years old.

im so shocked on how easy it is for teens to get a hold of such weapons that easily. i think something should be done since it seems like these young teens have easy access to weapon. i think we should have a system that tracks down gun buyers and make sure they have a liscence to purchase guns and be stricked on that issue... i mean there has to be something we can come up with as a community to mnimize or eliminate the access these kids have in purchasing such weapons...

What planet are you from???? I've been shooting ever since I was about 8, my kids shoot, all my friends shoot. We wouldn't allow your wimpy kids in our house anyway. They probably spend their days doing anti-American things like making Obama signs, and attending hitler youth rallys. Only a fool(like you) wouldn't teach their kids to shoot. Stalin, Castro, Pol Pot, Hilter, and every other murderous thug through out history has disarmed the population, before killing them. Since that's the kind of society you wish to live in, get the hell out of my country, and go find a place wehere you have no freedom. Obiviously you're way too stupid to appreciate what we have here. You should go live in Amsterdam, where it's legal to do the drugs you've been doing here.
KIds who shoot often with their parents NEVER EVER commit crimes. Kids who are raised by filthy, maggot infested, dope smoking, tree hugging, worm like creatures like yourself are the ones committing crime. There's a doctor who helps people like you, his name is Kevorkian. You should call him.

If you're going to post your nutcase ideas, don't you think you should learn a little grammar first. I'd hate to see you with a gun, after the way you just murdered our language with your keyboard.

Thank you for your cogent, well-considered reply. Under the current CT "Assault Weapons" Ban, all "AK style" weapons are prohibited from private ownership, as are the WASR models. The only exceptions are those relatively few weapons that were grandfathered in prior to the ban's efefctive date.

Well you better go see the Dr to remove your balls there sonny because it was an AK-47. It was my son who disarmed the 16 yr old along with his two other friends...Next time you disarm someone with bullets flying right next to your eardrum, come tell us about it. I yi yi.. Does the speculation ever end?
First off, I do not believe it was a true AK-47, despite your uninformed contentions, and secondly, i do not believe your ITG (internet tough guy) schtick that it was your kid who disarmed the punk with the AK-wannabe weapon. I'd be pissed at my kids if they did something so foolish. There are a lot more dead people than heroes in this type of situation, generally.
