What's up with Channel 3 and this business of naming winter storms? Is this corroborated by any other weather service, or is this just some self-important Ch.3 thing? I have never seen any other weather service assign a name to every snowfall.

Yes, it's just a ridiculous channel 3 idea:
"At Channel 3, we name winter storms if we expect at least 6 inches of snow for much of the state. This has been a Channel 3 exclusive since 1971!"
