How many others are sick & tired of the self checkouts? I do not mind doing it when I have a few items and never want to do it any more when I have produce or bulk stuff, I will get over charged almost every time because I chose the wrong "tomatoe" and get charged for the expensive ones. After getting home and finding this out with gas prices it is too much to go back. Also prices are rising so fast and we have to do the work and the store reaps the rewards. Also we are wotking people out of a job! I will from now on get in the 1 line the store has open now and wait for as long as it takes for them to check me out! WE ARE PAYING FOR A SERVICE WE OURSELVES ARE DOING! The excuse that they can't make it without raising prices is crap! they have saved on emplyees hourly wages (since we are doing thier work for free) and raised prices still and they like some other businesses think that they are above losing a little profit. our life has changed drsticaly since gas & food prices have gone up why are they above that? They think they can still make millions for thier stock holders while the little guy can't feed thier family! Gas stations are raising prices on "the other stuff" they sell because they can't make money on gas..........People STOP buying all "that other stuff" when they start feeling the hurt we do they will join us in calling for lower prices & or different fuel sources!

They were told as part of their training that the average customer spends between four and six thousand a year there. This is between gas and other goods. Maybe your revolt can make a difference.

Oh my god so use the regular checkout and the gas stations do not make much on their gas PLUS last time I checked this was a free country.

You cannot be conservative and support that stupid rant....Meijer is making themselves more efficient while still allowing everyone the option to do it the old fashioned way. I guess we can go back to the old way and have one cashier and one bagger on every lane....Oh but that would cost more money, raise prices, be less efficient.....

Actually I believe in the customer always being right. It is hard to go to Meijer and not hear someone complaining about the check outs. And yes I am all for a company making money, but the best way to do that is thru customer satisfaction.

Because the cost of fuel is higher, it costs more to get it to market so the suppliers raise their prices. The increased cost is passed on to the customer. If you don't like self checkouts, don't use them. I'm tired of being 6th in line at the one checkout that is open and waiting for the 'guest' to argue with the 'team member' for five minutes about what kind of cheese they can buy with WIC when both of them are speaking English as a second language and not doing too well with it at that.

My point was you have to stand in line 15 minutes to have someone else do THIER work which is checking me out! Yes costs have gone up and then they let more people go and expect us to do the work AND pay higher prices. And Robentcorp you must work for a gas station or grocer....it's a free country.....DUHH. I just don't like being taken for a ride and then have them charge me more for it! Like I said I will wait & wait & wait in the longer check out line for THEM to do the work? The more people that do that will cause stores to have more check out lines open. The "customer doing the work" started before tha gas prices went up, now they just have a good excuse to save even more for thier profit line.......Customer Satisfaction is the way to running a succesful operation!!!!!! I for one hope to see a lot more people standing in line and forcing these places to do what is right.......the job they are being paid to do.

What is the fuss? If you don't like self-checkout, don't use it. I don't like to use them, but I don't mind them being there. The more people that use them are people that aren't in line ahead of me. If you are choosing the wrong tomato price, that is operator error. Don't blame Meijers for your mistake. If you had brought it to their attention, they would have corrected it. Self-checkout is there for convenience, but no one is forcing you to use it. This is a similar mentality to book burning. If one person doesn't like it, nobody can have it.

What does being a conservative or not have to do with it? I'm sure liberals and conservatives alike are fed up with rising prices across the board. Insinuating that not being a conservative equals stupidity is just a chance to throw around name calling. What is the point?

Whats the fuss? read it.......they now have 12 self checkout lines going and maybe 2 operator lanes......most people want the operator lanes and there is a long wait. Operator error? sheesh I am not a cashier.......After 45 minutes in the store buying 150 dollars worth of food I am supposed to remember which of 6 differant tomatoes I picked? This week I had to do the self checkout because the other lines were husge and I had an appointment.....sure enough the mushrooms I got were 2/5.00 and they rang up as 3.49 I had to wait (and so did 3 people behind me) for the one girl helping all 6 self checkouts to come and send someone back to produce to check the price and then scan her card and remove them and scan the right price. I was in a hurry and I am sure others have things to do also they should not be subjected to waiting because the people ahead of them don't know what they are doing (me as a cashier) or because the scanner didn't ring it up right. And I was too far from home to go back and get the lousy 5 times the diff......that should change since it costs a lot more than that to go back and get the right price. I don't care if they have the option of a few self checkouts for crying out loud it is that they are forcing you to use them when they only have 2 other lanes open.

I don't care if they have the option of a few self checkouts for crying out loud it is that they are forcing you to use them when they only have 2 other lanes open. How about this, you open your own store. Hire all the people needed to keep enough checklanes open so the customers don't have to wait long. Also, buy the goods, like Meijer does. All produce in grown in the US, unlike other who buy from South America and Mexico were it is very cheap. Plus all the other goods that have increased in price by as much as 28%, but you increase your prices by 5-8%. So, when you do this, just so you can have a cashier check you out because it is to much for you to do it yourself(by the way, do you use ATM's or is that off limits because it is the tellers job?)let me know so I can be around for the going out of business sale in a month or two.

I have never seen a Meijer where there were only two cashiers--I just got back from mine(Knapps Corners)and there were at least 12 cashier operated lanes. I love the self check out myself--I buy lots of produce, and it all seems to have a sticker with the code number to enter. I hate waiting for the person in front of me in the 'regular' lane arguing about every item and whether it is/isn't on sale, etc. I think Fred has a good system--self check out if you wnat, or plenty of regular lanes if you want full service. . working for nothing wrote: <quoted text> Whats the fuss? read it.......they now have 12 self checkout lines going and maybe 2 operator lanes......most people want the operator lanes and there is a long wait. Like I said I will wait & wait & wait in the longer check out line for THEM to do the work? You had herd of cows when you started having to pump your own gas, didn't you? And you always go inside the bank to make the teller complete the transactions for you and never use an ATM? Not all Meijer stores are run the same. I'll avoid the Kalamazoo and 28th street Meijer at all costs because they inevitably have few cashiers and long lines. Cascade or Gaines Township, on the other hand, always have several lanes open. All of them have the self checkout option which I appreciate when I don't want to wait in line. As I said before, if you don't like them, don't use them. You obviously have more time on your hands than a lot of the rest of us to wait in line 15 minutes to be checked out.

I think there are some who just have to stand up for "Red" LOL The meijer I go too river town and Clyde park always only have 2 check out lanes going where "they" work them.....If I only have a small amount I have no problem with the self checkout but as I stated someone has lost there job because of this and they want me to do it for nothing! And ROFL no I don't have an ATM card! This is not a matter of for or against.....if YOU want to do your own stuff more power to you....I don't care but I am paying top dollar for Groceries (it's not Aldies) I want the people who are trained to scan my stuff to do it! and then maybe we can get back to the days when customers were taken care of.... Who needs India for out sourcing we will do right here.

There is acutally no Rivertown that far East...it becomes 44th street East of Ivanrest. Are you perhaps thinking of the Meijer at 54th and Clyde Park? The number of checkout lanes open depends on the the time of day. Evenings are usually busier, so they have more lanes open than 10 in the morning when less people shop.

I don't feel particularly 'taken care of' when a cashier scans my items for me. I don't appreciate the tactics that some of them use such as stopping the belt so that I have to wait to load all my items and they have already started scanning my items by the time I get them on the belt. Considering how many times I've caught my items scanning with incorrect prices at Meijer (the worst being a 6 oz. can of frozen OJ ringing up at $13.00), it seems to me to be another way to prevent the customer from catching their errors and making us pay more. Check your receipts before you leave the store, folks. Just because a 'trained cashier' scanned your items doesn't mean they scanned correctly or that the cashier caught it if they didn't.

Being a conservative does not mean you are against high prices it is about principals. Business should be free to innovate and create efficiencies, as Meijer is doing, as it sees fit. If it works great, if not well they try something else. Some people here seem to think there is an entitlement to a cashier?????????? If we are going to entitle people to thinks like cashiers we can do better. For my entitlement I would like a 22 year old young lady with a massage table. You are not thinking big enough if you are going wacko liberal.

2 issues I have with Meijer. Some of their stores will not adhere to the "Scanner Law" and pay the bounty. They know that most people are not going to "pitch a fit" let alone file a civil claim for a few dollars. For some reason these certain stores feel they are above the law. Secondly, when they have the "buy 1 get 1 free" deals, most of the time the price is artificially inflated. This is also a violation of law. The general "everyday price" on the purchased item cannot be raised to accomodate the free item. This is misleading and illegal. Example: 1 lb. bag of shrimp... Everyday price $6.99, but when the buy one, get one free deal is going, that same bag of shrimp is $14.99. Simply another law which Meijer obviously feels does not apply to them and even Michigans' Attorney General does not believe the violation warrants a second look. Hmm... I wonder why? Yet multiply these violations by thousands each day and it is no longer a small, insignificate issue.
