While I agree with the stiff penalties for animal abuse, it is disheartening that the same rules don't apply for humans. Domestic violence perpetrators often receive a "don't do this again" slap on the wrist, or a misdemeanor charge with minimal jail time. It's unfortunate that society does not view it in the same light.

Ok you are obviously clueless , An animal is NOT the same thing s a child. How can you even compair an animal to a child ? They are completely differnt . Wow now I can see why you didnt have kids and probably a good thing you didnt.

So by your logic - if you have a pet you should keep an eye on them at all times? If you are unfortunate/fortunate enough to have to work for your money and that pursuit requires you go to work - are you irresponsible because you can't keep close tabs on your cat? Are you suggesting that a tragedy where a child is abused or killed is the same? Since when can you leave a bowl of food on the floor and a clean litterbox for your child and go off for a few days? Nothing in this story said word one about the roommate or his/her situation. How is it that with absolutely no factual information you were able to come up with this profound judgement on pet ownership? The only person culpable, guilty or who you could even argue is not deserving of pity, is Terri Stemmel. Perhaps you might think about how awful it must have been for the roommate to find her beloved pet so cruely tortured and killed when she made the irresponsible move to leave her apartment and not take the cat with her. We don't know why she or the cat were there to begin with - but it's a tragedy for both of them. And just as when a child is the victim - there are many people who wish they had been more diligent or paid closer attention in the hopes they could have prevented this tragedy. Hindsight is always 20/20. My thoughts and prayers will be with everyone who was touched by this tragedy - including all the people who posted here.

Agreed. Neither is negligence. This pet owner was negligent. How can you not keep your pet safe. If you aren't responsible enough to keep your pet safe, do not have them.

I want to say so many things about this, but I'll only say this...

This "person" should be locked up, but in a place where she will have constant supervision, and hopefully be drugged to the gills. I don't think jail will do any good for her, but proper intervention in the proper facility might.
Seems like somehow the ball was dropped on this gal's care if she was able to kill more than one animal. Someone had to know that this was going on already. I personally am not having pleasant thoughts concerning her treatment, but refrain from saying it.
Makes me sick.

Did anyone LOOK at the picture? Holy crap, that's the scariest thing I've ever seen. If I was a cat and saw that thing coming at me, I'd have had a heart attack on the spot.

More facts please from Lansing, you're as bad as she is. You need to keep her company in jail. I'm usually more caring even for those in the wrong but you both make me sick!

Oh pipe down!

Good grief, I was posting the same **** that Meow Mix posts in every thread every time a child loses a hair.

I was showing how absolutely ridiculous it is to expect people to have absolute control over any given situation.

Why was she allowed to live in society? Did no one notice before this that there is something seriously wrong with this girl? Where is her family?

Sorry for the cat but I can't believe the huge response to this. People are more outraged about this than news of murder and child abuse. When did the life of animals mean more than human life. Yes her punishment was lenient but it's a first offense, she doesn't deserve life in prison (lets keep this in perspective). She needs serious counseling and monitoring in the community.
I agree - this concern for animals before people is typical of the public school mentality

Her family is probably the reason she is this way.

Where were the neighbors, doctors, teachers, store clerks, mail man, meter reader or anyone else that had ever seen her?

I went to Catholic school my whole lie and it's not concern of animals before people. It's concern for defenseless trusting animals that are not harming anyone being tortured and killed by a crazy insane scarey future serial killer. You MORON! Maybe you should let her live in your house after she does her 30 days. I'm sure she'll be needing a new place to live.

I have plenty of sympathy for cats and children. I just don't have any sympathy for cat people who don't watch their cats and keep them safe.
Kind of the same way you don't like parents who don't keep their children out of lakes. Same dif.
You are right if the pet runs loose, but it's a cat, the damn thing can't even bite back.
Now lets have a room mate who owns a lion. lol.

You can see clearly she did this to defenseless critters, and not just this one time, and hideous torture.
Burned the cats ears?, please.

Loses a hair? The children I post about are dead. Chewed up by dogs while the mom sleeps nearby, a 4 month old beaten to death and tortured by the mother, and I'm sure there will be more horrible parents to read about in the future with an attitude like yours. You seem take abuse and neglect pretty lightly. Crap doesn't just happen - there is usually someone responsible for the death of a child or animal and they should held accountable.

What a fat scumbag. People like this should be used for medical research as punishment. And BTW - studies show people aho abuse animals also abuse children. Keep this worthless piece of trash scumbag out of our society.
