When one pows into the side of a solid object, one goes poof! Ponder that pugnacious point.

We all miss Gustavo and will fight to keep our streets safe for all road users! We all share the blame for this tragedy if we do not adapt our behavior to stop it from happening to another beloved person. Please, if you must drive a car, watch out for cyclists and pedestrians and do not use your cellphone! Cyclists, we need to be aware of our surrounding at all times. Ride like your life depends on it because it does. Do NOT be afraid to take the lane - it is the safest way to be seen and survive. Use lights and wear a helmet at all times! Do not break the law and run stop signs.

There will be a memorial ride for Gustavo on Friday the 15th.

I don't want to get into an argument, but upon re-reading the article, it seems that he wasn't RIDING in the crosswalk. He was riding east on Shoreline Dr and was crossing the intersection when he was hit. Also, he wasn't passing on the right - that's where cyclists ride - on the right.

Let me get this straight, this is being reported that a cyclist "ran into" a large truck? It sounds more like the truck driver neglected to check his mirror before making a turn. What if this truck had crushed a Mini Cooper like that without checking his mirror? What would *that* be called?
It would be called impossible. How would a mini cooper end up on the right hand side of him crossing a cross walk?

There is no "lug nut" rule and for you to even bring that up is ignorant.
Based on reading the article, it unfortunately sounds like the cyclist was at fault regardless. The rig was trying to make a turn and it sounds like Gustavo wasn't paying attention and basically got cut off.
I've ridden shoreline and most Long Beach streets and have never felt unsafe. As long as you abide by the california vehicle code and make your intentions obvious, there is no cause for concern. I've even riden down Pacific Coast Highway with no shoulder next to log trucks and had no anxiety.
You just have to know what you're doing.
Actually the ignorance is displayed by bike riders who do not realize laws written on paper or green lines painted on the road do nothing to protect them from a car or truck who's driver ,for what ever reason, doesnt see them. Right or wrong is hashed out after the fact. Speaking of facts if a bike and car collide at 30 mph who is likely to sustain physical injury? My guess is the driver of the 3000 lb car will be just fine. I have seen too many bike riders, ride as though they are kings of the road, pulling into intersections unsafely, running stop signs, riding two or three abreast, impeading traffic. And I too have logged thousands of miles on several bikes over 20 plus years, but never have I lost sight of the fact that I am riding in a cars world.
