In 1998 the Carbon County Vo- Tech held a rededication of the Jim Thorpe Mausoleum. That weekend the Carbon County Area Sports Hall of fame hosted Grace Thorpe. She was accompanied by an Indian Cheif from Oklahoma, who worked for the local TV station in oklahoma. Sam was his name and he traveled with grace for promotional purposes. While Grace was about to perform her native american ritual, a pair of red-tailed hawks circled above the monument for the entire time, maybe 15 minutes and after the ritual they flew off. Sam went crazy saying that the red-tails are a sign from abobe that Jim is finaly at peace here and Grace said that it is a sign that her father was happy and at rest. as grace said "Oklahoma had their chance and they blew it". There is a tape of the ceremony.

Let him stay where he is. I hope the town fights his sons tooth and nail. If his soul is wondering then he is getting to visit lots of places, and perhaps he likes that.

How sad!
The town of Mauch Chunk graciously took the body of Jim Thorpe because his widow couldn't do better with it. They were made promises of great things to come to their community in the form of money for hospitals, schools, and other assets. They got nothing but the body, and now the family even wants THAT back. What nerve!

if history serves correct, they would not bury mr thorpe on tribal grounds because they viewed him as a traitor for participating in the white man's sports and life style. now they realized they were being complete idiots? mauch chunk had it's own history before this, molly mcguires and all so the town is always going to be laden with tourists. not to mention glen onoko falls one of the most beautiful sites in pennsylvania.

Why don't they teach these things in school?
I said to my hubby this morning when the news reported about Berks county some book and all its history. I said why dont the schools buy the books and teach our kids about history that has happened right here in our area. I could be wrong maybe they do teach local history now, but not when I was in school. I liked American History, I would have loved to learn about Lehigh Valley History.

Just let the family have the remains. As a christian I understand the premise behind the life after death thing, and assume that the spirit of Jim Thorpe can be anywhere at anytime. The people of Jim Thorpe (the town), should take the high road, and in a grand ceremony that would include members of all of the great Native American tribes release his remains in a great brotherly gesture. The town should keep the taxpayers money out of the hands of the money grubbing lawyers and spend it on the living people of the town.

Have a big ceremony and give the body back. Then all the attention will be where he was buried all that time. Have a lot of advertisement about the upcoming event. You can still advertise as him being there all those years, and being returned to his family. There's a solution if you want one.

His bady lays here and i dont think the county will want to lose the tourism that is here, i mean they could make a museum for him but the body makes it more symbolic.

They don't even really care at first they disgrace him for joining now they want him back and the life after death is a little weird to me if your dead your dead the bible says in Ecclesiastes 9:5
"For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten." and not that I'm trying to harm you or make any accusations but that's what the Bible says.

They want it back to make a Jim Thorpe themed casino . There is actually rituals they could perform that would allow his soul to rest . I think all that stuff is baloney however to each their own . Its all about the money .

Exactly. juju you hit the nail on the head. If the town does this correctly, or with much honor and integrity. We will not only receive the notoriety for giving him a proper burial in the first place, we will also look like champions of a great compromise, that will add to the wonderful spirit of a great town.

Jim Thorpe should be allowed to return where he belongs. That is with his family. It is a disgrace that a contract can keep anyone from resting in peace. Let him go home.

Give him back. Since they took Asa Packerís name off the park you can rename the town Packerton. Oh, there already is a Packerton. Then name it Asatown. No, that sounds stupid. The only other name would be Drurytown. HaHa.
