It doesn't matter if the officer is Spanish speaking or not. The police department goes by seniority. If the lowest man is a Spanish speaking officer, he gets laid off first. Fair is fair. It can't all be about who speaks Spanish and who doesn't. Maybe the Police Diversity Board should look into supporting classes for officers who remain on duty to learn Spanish. They can go out and find volunteers to teach the classes. If they are that concerned for officer safety they should do more than threaten a lawsuit.

Good post Monica. While I was reading this, I thought, "Is this guy for real?" I'm sure the people of reading would rather feel safe than worry about who speaks what language. You have an excellent idea as afr as the "classes" are concerned. It's also a good way to have the Spanish speaking people work with the police. I'm sure it'll never happen-it's too logical.

Once again everyone else is expected to cater to the latinos because they are too lazy and arrogant to make the effort to learn the language of the country they moved to. This is America, we speak English here.. if you don't want to learn the language get out.

Next time you go out to dinner, look back in the kitchen, you will see me or my cousins working there cooking your food. It's opinions like those above that make me cook your food. Who knows what I put in it because I know you hate us. Bon Appetite!

Great post and also before you get out, stop receiving your FREE money, FREE house,FREE food and FREE healthcare. If the handouts end maybe people would become a productive member of our society.

Dumb, Dumb, Dumb, Dumb, Dumb, Lay off desk workers not the Police. The City is not only putting the people of reading at risk but the surrounding towns as well.

This is a city admin that spent 2 million on the Pagoda and is now having problems even keeping the Libraries open. And now this Act 47 nonsense makes Reading's image worse AND allows them to raise my property taxes beyond the current law. The problem with Reading is not the people living in it, it's the people running it!!

WHY SHOULD WE AS ENLISH SPEAKING AMERICANS HAVE TO LEARN A LANGUAGE THAT IS NOT PRIMARY IN OUR COUNTRY. IF THEY WANT TO LIVE IN OUR COUNTRY, THEN LEARN OUR LANGUAGE. WHEN I TRAVEL OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES, I DONT GET AN OPTION TO CHOOSE 1 FOR THE PRIMARY LANGUAGE OR 2 FOR ENGLISH. EITHER LEARN THE LANGUAGE OR GO BACK TO YOUR OWN COUNTRY

we do live in america. our language is english. why do people insist on resisting the national language? All other nationalities have become part of the "melting pot" that this country has been termed.

I Haven't read the other comments but here goes mine.
It seems that it is absolutly fine to hire and promote some people over others who may even be more qualifyed, but woah be it, if standard proceedures are followed about who gets layed off first. They must be hired FIRST and left go LAST. Wouldn't THAT be fare.

Having just read the other comments I see mention about learning english. It brings to mind the FACT that my GREAT Grand Parents spoke primarly Pennsylvania German. My Grand Parents felt "Dutch" was not the language their children should learn, and made it a rule that no Dutch be spoken around the house. My mother "born in Cementon in 1906" did learn some Dutch from other kids her age, and I learned what I know from her. That being said, "Machs Gudt und Holicha Danks Giva."

P.S.

As a young hispanic my father who was born in Puerto Rico made sure I learned the language of the land. Now I speak, read and write in both spanish and english. Only a fool goes to live in a country who's language is different and refuses to learn it. But hey, in this PC age victimology and the mediocrity that results are worn like badges of honor by many in the latin community.

The Hispanics should take some of their free gov't money and take some English classes. The police are already over worked so why should they be expected to learn a second language. Many of those that refuse to learn our language sit at home and collect free money for made up ailments. TWO WORDS ...PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY!!!!! Here in the US we speak English. My ancestors had to or they would not have survived.
