Tanner avoids Vallejo
I'm sure I am not the only resident of Vallejo disheartened by the revelation that our city manager does not want to live in our community, even though he is required to under his contract .

Well, here we go. Let's see how many posts before someone uses the new anti-PSU buzzword about how Tanner is "treated"

Kimmy Stockli,
No, I am not disappointed in the least. You are forgetting why Joseph Tanner was hired in the first place. That reason was, and still is, to return Vallejo to stabile financial footing. That requirement in his contract was struck down in the State Supreme Court. Are you saying that you are disappointed that an illegal requirement is not enforced on his contract? I am a long time resident, and frankly the financial decisions have had no measurable impact in my life. And they wouldn't impact City Manager Tanner's life if he lived here either. |
|
Let Mr. Tanner do the difficult job to which he is committed. Citizens of Vallejo deserve the best city manager available, and Tanner is up to the task. Remember, his salary is an investment in our future!

No performance evaluations are fairly common in this city, so I wouldn't put all the blame on Joe Tanner. I wonder if, at some point, his performance is reviewed by the City Council? Perhaps Hannigan missed that session??
Also, I strongly doubt if any of us would sell our home in one city, to move to another. Give us a break - the real estate climate is not conducive to selling property, period. And when Joe Tanner was hired, we were seeing the beginning of the real estate downturn. |

Kimmy Stockli's letter is just the latest installation of an anti-Joe Tanner campaign that's being pushed by the TH. This is an on-goin series folks so expect more articles and letters to come.

It makes a big difference when you are deciding for a city you live in and making decisions for one you have no connections too. There is no excuse. The houses here are the least expensive in the entire bay area. Vallejo has beautiful areas, believe it or not. If his decisions effect his home prices then he would have a more vested interest in getting us the best for Vallejo.

Joe Tanner is not the blame for the woes of Vallejo that have been going on for nearly 20 years due to collusive deals made behind closed doors with council members and employee union members.
Anybody with half a wit and who has lived here longer that 5 years knows that Vallejo has been stymied by these politically motivated contracts. Vallejo needs Joe Tanner to clean up this mess. He has the credentials to make it happen, unlike some of Vallejo's employees who receive education incentive pay that has nothing to do with their positions. If the Times Herald wants to investigate something, if they know how, look into Vallejo properties and businesses being sold to present and former council members. Look into the the money paid to get pro-union council members elected. Mr. Tanner is not obligated to live in Vallejo so get over it and let the man do his job. |

I still don't know what it is that Joe Tanner has accomplished. If the council that hired him just wanted a union buster, it seems they could have found a cheaper advocate for this. From a practical standpoint, without any bias towards the CM, what has he delivered, other than this abstract concept of "new" leadership.

Are you the wife or daughter of Vallejo F.F. Stockli?
How do you decide which family's turn it is to play attack dog? Coin toss, draw straws, indenture to Kurt? |
He has accomplished a 7-0 vote to take this city of the depressive strangle hold of the employees unions . Look around you, nothing has been positively accomplished in this city in a long, long time. You have the same political appointees, the same union paid-for votes on the council to ensure unsustainable compensation packages are held in place by a minority of employees who don't even vote in this city. Abstract leadership? I would take any kind of leadership instead of a bunch of bent over creeps that have been allowed to run this city into the ground. |

If Tanner doesn't think he can make Vallejo good enough for himself to live in, then we've just learned what he thinks of his own abilities.

Wow, the IAFF's attempt to smear Joe Tanner is really stepping up. Funny how the only people who think he's doing a bad job are the ones whose golden goose has been killed by their own greed.(Good catch, Sam!)
Tanner is doing a great job. It shows how desperate the unions are that they have no other strategy than to attempt to discredit him. I guess they don't have much confidence in their ability to get the bankruptcy judge to swallow all the BS they're shoveling. Thankfully, and due both to Joe Tanner and the unanimous vote of the city council, their misguided rule of Vallejo is about to come to an end. |

Vallejo's police chief's primary home is in Oakland. He "keeps" an apartment in Vallejo for late nights. I imagine it is sub-leased quite a bit.
Quit using a double standard, especially when the chief of police constantly compares Vallejo with Oakland, which is a joke in itself, in just about any category you can think of. Just in case you missed it, Chief Nic's primary home is in Oakland. |

I would agree that nothing has been accomplished for a long time. Surely it can't be because of the unions "strangle hold". The unions want more business and industries to fatten the GF, wouldn't you think? My position is that Joe Tanner, like several before him, is unable to make anything significant happen to turn the economic fortunes of the city around. Why do you think that is? If the bankruptcy petition is rejected, will it be Joe's failure? Personally, I think Joe will leave rather than have to sit across the negotiating table again if the court rejects the petition. |

I think the root of our problem is starting to come out. Vallejo Police, Fire & Public works employees used to live here and be part of are community. Now, 21% of our city forces are pulling paychecks out of Vallejo every two weeks and are not spending the money in Vallejo. I used to be able to call any city agency and get to somebody I knew. I know that it is not legal to make an employee live here but they could put a time limit on how long it takes to get here. Make it 5 or 10 mins and more employees would be forced to live here and become involved with our community. This problem has been going on for years and now it has finally come to light. Wake up our city council! Make some "real" changes for "real" Vallejoans..........thats all I have to say about that.

when tanner took the job as city manager, maybe he had intentions of moving here but after working a few months and saw what goes on here, i wouldn't blame him. would you move to closer to your job, knowing that city has psu problems, bankruptcy looming, an inept city council, good businesses comes once in a blue moon and goes under in a few years.
although it would have been nice if he move here, its a rational decision not to. but he is doing a good job campare to past city managers. |
