nranewsdotcom, on target. ever try to get a new puppy from the pound? got 200 or more bucks? if they really wanted to find homes for them the price would be realistic. instead they set the price so high most will be killed. 45 bucks should be plenty. 50 animals makes sence while 45 bucks where 3 or 4 at 200 just plain is a crime. they might just as well shoot them and save space. face it, they would find far more homes for then at 45 bucks then they ever will at 200.

Wow...what a bunch of nut cases! No worries folks... Global Warning will be the end of all of us soon! Now what did I do with my sunscreen? Must be in my mega SUV that gets 1 gallon to the crank!

Do us all a favor and stay in San Fran!

So Orcas and elaphants eventually die like the rest of us, duh. Humans are superior to animals and Six Flags is not a religious institution, it is there to make a profit. These animals in zoos around the world get better medical treatment than most humans who are locked up around the world.

Realist,

Nice... so everyone here that thinks the animals are fine is suddenly a qualified Zoologist.

One of the bigger issues with the animals there is the constant noise and vibration of the rides.

The only question that needs to be asked is whether the animals are better off in the wild or not.

It's not about being a hippie, it's about having a conscious.

Do you need a tissue hippie? I've been to the park numerous times and the animals all seem to be fine.

You have inadvertantly hit on the solution Festus, though maybe not your intent.
Six Flags is in it for profit. If there is no money in the caging of large animals in small surroundings they wouldn't do it.
So.......stop supporting this enterprise. Stop going to the animal shows.

Absurd (and very lame) argument (nranewsdotcom)that animal rights "wackos" should be supporting human causes instead. Has it ever occurred to you neanderthals that maybe we do ?? Compassion should know no bounds. Some of us more highly evolved "wackos" can actually care about more than one thing at a time.

98% of charitable giving in this country is to human causes. How dare you begrudge us the other 2%...

So why are you so threatened by a bunch of bunny and tree huggers anyway ??

I couldn't agree more with Mr. Landskroner and Ms. Doyle. This is animal cruelty at its peak. I am disgusted and heartbroken that these animals are suffering in the name of greed. It has to stop.

Sadly, this article reminds me that the Times Herald does not understand the basics of journalism. Solid journalism requires fact, balance, and an impartial approach except on the editorial page. I agree this article was an advertisement of Six flags, just like the numerous 'human interest' stories that are advertisements for our public safety unions. Consider the SF Chronicle as an alternative.

What about the 40 million cattle that are raised and slaughtered every year? Imagine, we keep these animals penned up and fed just so we can kill and eat them. Is a cow's well being less important than an Orca's? More important? Maybe it is just more fashionable to be vocal about the "exotic" animals? Perhaps this is a boutique political cause that makes us feel better about ourselves as we pull up to the burger window and double down on a big mac?

Ron,

Why don't you worry about fixing the human conditions in your hometown of Oakland first. Then when your town is a eutopia of peace, love and respect for fellow man, you can tell us how to run an amusment park.

Luke,

So you feel that nobody can express an opinion unless they are perfect according to your criteria?

Frankly, your response is ignorant and contributes nothing.

Actually, IDA has campaigns for just about any animal cruelty issue you can come up with, and fights these abuses every day. So do myriad other animal rights groups. IDA, for sure, believes that all animals are equal. However, I have to wonder what eating meat has to do with the article at hand. These are refutations of facts in an obvious advertisement fluff piece. The topic is not about eating meat; I have to wonder, what's your point?

Hmmm... is someone paying you to spout lies like this? Shelters have to make some income to take care of all the animals that thoughtless humans discard. In Los Angeles, you can adopt a dog for around $40 if it's already altered. If it isn't, the most it will cost is around $80. If you don't want to spend even that much to adopt another LIFE, then you probably shouldn't do it. But spouting lies to deter others from rescuing dogs or cats from a shelter is sheer malfeasance, not to mention a big, fat lie. You ought to be ashamed of yourself. I volunteer as a dog rescuer. What do YOU contribute to society? My guess is nada.

Willabelle: The gun nuts writing up here are obviously desperate to justify the fact they like to kill animals for sport. If they felt good about it, they'd ignore stories like this. And btw, that "why don't you care about people" tactic is old, lame and immediately points out how mentally limited someone is. Hellloooo! The topic is on animals at Six Flags. If the topic were on human rights abuses, my guess is, you and I would be there, too!

Ah, I see. IDA has a wide a varied complaint list then. That's OK, too each his/her own. I think most us out here in normalville want any animal treated with care and compassion. There will always be fringe nut cases that are just not satisfied until all these six flags animals are released back into the wild.
