Question: was the park run differntly (better for the animals) under "Marine World" management? I would really be insterested in this because both writters are only dealing with the time frame of when 6 flags started to run the park.

I like the animals in the park. I see no problem with how they are treated and I see no signs of abuse.

IDA would have more credibility if they did not use terrorist tactics to get their point across.

Maybe the IDA can hire some VIB radicals to be bull hook test dummies to see if the device really does cause damage.

Great letter Ron, I fully agree with you and Catherine on the treatment of these animals who are often removed from their wild habitat and placed in a completely foreign atmosphere to entertain us. I remeber many years ago driving by Marine World and seeing protesters out front. I wasn't sure what objections they had and thought of them as radicals, but after seeing a show on PBS, showing the horrors of Orca's being circled by boats with nets, usually Japanese fishermen who capture these animals, to later sell them to "amusement" parks, it made me sick. I can totally appreciate now what these selfless people at IDA are about, giving a voice to those who are far too often abused by us, for monetary gain. As far as terrorist acts made by IDA as mentioned by one reader, that's completely absurd. I am so happy to know many care about these creatures and only wish more spoke up for them.

I guess if we don't like the rules and regulations regarding animal husbandry we can urge our representatives to change the rules. Until then and assuming Six Flags is following the rules I don't have a problem with how the carnival operates. People enjoy seeing the animals at the park.

Saul,

No matter what the subject you are commenting on,
you show an intelligence level below that of the animals in question.

You are the one who belongs in a cage. More appropriately a padded cell!

Do you need a tissue hippie? I've been to the park numerous times and the animals all seem to be fine. I've had the opportunity to go back to their living quarters and they are clean and well maintained. Its just another excuse for domestic terrorism and radical hippies trying to get their invalid points across. The animals are FINE. I just wish the radical animal lovers were as clean as the animals.

I would like to apologize to Saul for the idiotic comment I made a couple blogs ago. I admit that I am a flaming liberal who would like to see Vallejo burn. I admit I have zero concept of how the real world operates. I have failed to see the wonderful points of view from Saul and other great bloggers because my head is severely lodged in my ****. I know that I am a blubbering idiot with no political pull in this city. My points are invalid and quite ridiculous sometimes, okay all the time.

Sincerely,

Sam Kurshan, flaming liberal superstar

Perhaps 'Saul Goode' would like to give specifics of IDA's "terrorist tactics" that he/she is referring to ?? Last time I checked, the right to peaceful protest was protected under the Constitution in this country, and not considered to be terrorist in nature.

'Realist'- I hope you are a veterinarian who has personally treated the elephants at Six Flags - if not, then you have no clue as to whether they are "FINE". Their medical records certainly say otherwise.

And just what are the "invalid points" the radical hippies are trying to convince the world of ?? Inconveniently for you, the invalid points just happen to be the glaring and undeniable truth.

Vallejo is burning and the IFF has yet to put what they started out.

Hypocrites.

The animals at Discovery Kingdom do suffer from the noise and pollution. It's an unnatural habitat just as some of the comments from Vallejo's brightest on this board.

I think subjecting these animals to all that noise has got to be bad in some way. I know it would give me a headache

team_ahh whatever, as of July 2007, the Park and about half of the animals belonged to the City of Vallejo. Before Six Flags exercised their option to buy the Park, IDA requested the medical records on the elephants owned by the City under the Freedom of Information Act and published their findings in "A Report on the Failures in Care and Management of Elephants at the Six Flags Amusement Park," which you can find online in a search. You can bet that the facts are true, or the Six Flags Corporation would have filed a lawsuit against IDA. They haven't because the facts are accurate.

Nici, the care of the elephants is not managed differently than it was when it was Marine World. The Director of the Elephant Program, Steve Johnson, has been there for 28 years. To learn more about their training program, do a search for Barbara K. Anderson P.O. Box 76, Hohenwald, TN. She is a former employee (who now works as an elephant caregiver at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tenneessee.) Read her sworn statement and weep.

You animal rights wackos could be using your time more efficiently by supporting "people rights" and would be much more appreciated. For example: PETA is guilty of slaughtering thousands of ordinary pets without even attempting to find homes for them. PETA should change their name to one having to do with animal extermination, and not ethical treatment!

When the last whale died one evening, a team of flensers and marine necropsey specialists were brought in and they had it hacked up and trucked out in 55 gal drums before the park opened the next day. I always wondered what all the drums were for over in a storage area.

nranewsdotcom, on target. ever try to get a new puppy from the pound? got 200 or more bucks? if they really wanted to find homes for them the price would be realistic. instead they set the price so high most will be killed. 45 bucks should be plenty. 50 animals makes sence while 45 bucks where 3 or 4 at 200 just plain is a crime. they might just as well shoot them and save space. face it, they would find far more homes for then at 45 bucks then they ever will at 200.
