You folks on this discussion board, criticizing this guy, are too funny! You think that Police abuse doesn't exist, especially in small town America.(buzzard sound) NEWSFLASH AMERICA!!! Police brutality DOES exist in any city or town across the nation. It's just been under the rug so long because people refuse to accept the truth about it! Silence and mental denial contributes much of the censorship about police abuse in real life.
Did the aliens abduct you too? Your probably a career criminal as well as a conspiracy theorist...

Holy Crap, i forgot all about WKRP, that show was great... Yeah this Hansen dude is a nut job. There has to be some way they can get him checked out and put on meds... each town has to have a few crazies though i guess.

This reminds me of the episode WKRP In Cincinnati when they changed formats and wound up with a rag-tag group of listeners who didn't like the new format. One nut leading the protest and the rest clueless about why they were there.

Through the DARE program and boyscouts, Veid was an excellent role model to me growing up. He helped me obtain my eagle scout award and to form good values in myself. I just can't immagine him being a "bada$$ bully." I'd back him up anyday.

With all due respect, we have investigated his claims and find them to be true, no matter how disturbing that may be to some of the posters on this matter. Think about how difficult it would be if you were being harassed by the CHIEF of police--how there would literally be no outlet for you to complain or seek justice. During the incident in which Paul emerged from his home to find the chief rummaging through his garage--without a warrant--he called me and I am a contemporaneous witness to the incident. I'm sorry if you find it hard to accept that police sometimes abuse their power in these ways but it does happen.
Those who deny that such things (and worse) happen or who seek to blame the victim only do so out of the mistaken notion that they can avoid becoming a victim themselves by acting in certain ways. As a police accountability activist for over 20 years, I can state that this just isn't so. Blaming the victim will not keep you safe.

To Michelle:

Have you ever talked to this CHIEF of police, of which you speak? As I said before, he is quite approachable and a decent HUMAN BEING. You might want to be aware that he does not suffer fools lightly.

And yes, I have been frisked and thrown in the back of a Minneapolis squad car for no better reason than driving up my alley and parking in my driveway in the middle of the night. They told me I turned right on a red light without stopping. I was tired, and in response to an officer's question about what I was doing there, despite my address matching the one on my license, I asked, "Can't you just give me the ticket?" At which point he told me to get out of the car. Was what happened to me unfair? Yep. Did I dwell on it? Nope.

Are you aware that you might be enabling Paul's delusions? Clearly, he sees you as some kind of advocate/life line who will believe him when he makes a panicky call to you when an officer shows up to deliver reports he himself requested.

And for those of you getting all your undies in a bunch because the CHIEF showed up, Newport does not have a very large police department. It's not like if Finney showed up in St. Paul when you called 911 because those darn kids were loitering at the corner with their skateboards again.

Finally: my parents also recently retired, and their complaints (mostly to family, thankfully) about neighborhood goings on and "why can't somebody DO something about this?" have gone from zero to about 3 per month. We try to humor them, talk to neighbors when necessary, and otherwise try to handle things in a civil and peaceful manner.

I've also had the pleasure of getting to know Veid, and I don't think he's as interested in random peoples' garbage as this article suggests. Veid's great, and people like Hansen can really spoil a good neighborhood.

You and Mr Hansen are loony birds of the same feather. Both have vendettas against anyone in your line of sight. Both with obscure complaints against motorcyclists. Both filled with conspiracy theories. Maybe you should give Miss {would you marry her?} Gross a call and she can be your "contemporary" witness. LOL.
Gotta run. I'm due back at Area 51 in a few minutes.

Communities United Against Police BrutalityI would like to correct an inaccuracy in this article. Communities United Against Police Brutality is a twin-cities based regional organization. We take on cases in Minneapolis, St. Paul and the surrounding suburbs. In fact, we are often contacted by people around the state of Minnesota and even by people in other states. It would not be unusual for us to take action on concerns anywhere in this region and we have done so in Chaska, Brooklyn Park, Richfield and many other locations. Members of our organization live in all parts of the twin cities.
Further, having worked with Paul Hansen for approximately a year and hearing about his situation incident by incident, we do not feel "snookered." The most recent incident, in which Paul emerged from his home to find the police chief in his garage without a warrant, looking through his possessions, is only one of a long line of harassments. Given the history, one would think the chief would simply use the post office to deliver any letters to Mr. Hansen. We are proud to have supported Paul and will continue to monitor the situation and offer our support as needed.

people like this are a dream come true for trial lawyers. They think they're smart, but they are SO easily manipulated. Trial lawyers have made a science out of picking juries made up of people like Michelle Gross. She's president of Communities United Against Police Brutality! such preening vanity.

I think the Chief making a personal appearance at this guy's house when he could have Fed Ex'ed the papers to him is evidence of an attempt to intimidate
In small towns and other communities, this is called "being neighborly", not "intimidation". Fed Ex'ing paperwork to someone only a few miles away is costly and absurd. If Mr. Hansen's whole 'brutality' case hinges on this one event (police chief in his open garage) then your so-called evidence falls very short of anything substantial.

On a kinder note, I do wish Mr. Hansen the best of luck with his situation. I hope Ms. Moenke helps him seek appropriate treatment for his considerable inability to get along with others. I wish both of them personal happiness, because when they discover it's within them, they will finally stop accusing everthing outside their four walls for their unhappiness.

As for the Chief making housecalls:

1. I have more people in my Office at this moment then the Newport PD has total.

2. Hansen had been abusive to his Officers on previous contacts, so I'd say Veid was exercising a bit of leadership in handling the call himself.

3. Anyone think that perhaps Veid was trying to personally "Reach out" to Hansen and talk things out in a civilized manner?

I'd guess that between his job, family, teaching DARE, volunteering for scouting and as an amateur boxing official Veid's probably a bit too busy to set aside time to harrass anyone.

I think all that are defending the Newport Chief must must like idiots He speaks for himself just watch him on cable access. As well as the council that would keep him on. It doesn't surprise me to see that he would think it were OK to criminally trespass. As far as using his position to harass, no surprise there either

Suppose that Mr. Hansen's claim is completely true; let's say the Chief did everything he's accused of doing. "Criminal trespass" is a far cry from "brutality" or even "abuse of authority". Please explain to me where in this entire situation you see 'brutality', excessive force, or dare I say, ANY kind of force.

It must take enormous self-restraint to answer each of this citizen's petty calls only to be treated rudely. I use the word citizen, because no matter how egregiously bad-mannered Hansen is to the police officers of Newport, they will still answer the calls. They will set aside his ridiculous claims and do everything they can to serve & protect him, just as they do for the neighbors that he (Hansen) is so preoccupied with.
