Spoken as a true Libertarian! I am horrified to find myself agreeing with you, and I am supposed to be a "Leftist." It galls me when public entities spend our money freely, seeming to make little effort to economize and reduce costs. In this case, charging extra fees for the basic services that justify taxation in the first place is patently obscene!

Quote "Consistent" "Purchase every other year, the finest equipment money can buy for the people with Government Jobs." Have you visited a government office lately? My government desk is over 45 years old, my credenza over 30, and some of our file cabinets date to the early 1960s. We lease a pre-owned copier, have a"low bid" phone system that hangs up on callers, are running 12 to 15 year old vehicles with over 170,000 miles, and recently replaced two computers because parts are no longer available from Dell. The only "new" furniture we have is used corporate donations. This is the real world of government service, along with taking thoughtless hits from clueless people.

Actually, it's not up to the public to solve all the problems, however, the public is responsible for electing the right people for the job. And it's apparent, we the tax payers have not been doing that. The best thing that can be done at this point is; NEVER VOTE FOR AN INCUMBENT.

Sounds like my kind of Gov't office! If more were managed in this miserly fashion, perhaps there wouldn't be obscene proposals like Duluth's.

No Herman, I have not seen your office. Excuse me if i dont start crying over the condition of your Offic furniture, while I go to my productive job in a factory that is 100 years old, miserable hot in the summer, and freezing cold in the winter. My plastic yard chair that the boss bought on sale at Kmart 8 years ago, needs another wrap of Duct tape....i gotta go now. I hope I get to pass the Brand New, perfectly maintained vehicles with the 6 people standing next to them, blocking traffic, while they are waiting for the boss to finish his coffee, before they begin filling a pothole in the road median.

Go into our schools and look at the equipment, especially athletic equipment, and lack of even basic supplies. Many Minnesota science labs do not meet basic standards. Then look at the massive staff cuts, particularly clerical, custodial, and teacher aides. Minnesota government is not wasteful, it's on a slippery downhill slope. You can only do more with less for so long before the system crashes. I would also doubt that Mr/Ms Consistent is asking for fewer government services.

I don't recommend your "solution," because you apparently aren't willing to be informed enough to know which incumbents are voting for spendthrift budgets and which are being outvoted arguing against them. Imagine the scenario of a bright, hard-nosed newcomer, elected by promise of cutting waste and fraud; who is outvoted by those unwilling to challenge the status quo, and then you would vote hin/her out as if s/he was part of the problem! Be informed, know who champions waste and who fights it, and vote out those expensive "champions." THEN you'll have the gov't you want!

Excellent point.....but It is the Incumbents that maintain the culture of the organization....They ARE the problem. The Founders never envisioned a "Professional Political Class", or a sub-class of 1/3 of the General Population, dependent on the other 2/3 for their sustanance. This 1/3 keeps the "waste" goingin order to maintain a lifestyle to which they have become accustomed....they alway votein the Leftist. And until the past 8 years, the Republicans were always fiscally conservative and never got the majority of ythe vote from the Government Class.

And I don't get the whole idea that the people who vote "leftist" as you put it, do so because they are accustomed to a certain lifestyle. Do you mean wanting decent public schools, libraries for our kids to read, public parks, clean cities, etc.? I know, SHAME on us for wanting those things!

I also make financial and time/volunteer contributions to charities and organizations that I use (like public television) or believe in (like women's shelters). There are no demons here. I do my part; I both contribute to and enjoy what is offered by my community. That's how it's supposed to work.

Fee's for one of the most core of government functions? Now I've seen it all. We tax and spend for everything under the sun and rather than cut back on the DISCRETIONARY spending, they want to charge a "fee" for Police and Fire. What next, a "fee" for each city council meeting. What the hey, why not. And to the flipping moron tax and spend sympathizer asking for solutions rather than criticism, THEY GET PAID TO RUN THE GOVERNMENT, I DON'T. That said, give me the budget line item, by line item and I gaurantee I can make it work. I've done with my budget my ENTIRE FLIPPING LIFE.

Take all the money in the city budget for these functions and refund it to the taxpayers. Then, let these departments fund themselves by "fees" from the people that use the services. That will be an eye opener trying to get the money from the people that use the most police services.

This is why I say that "but" is an acronym -- it stands for Behold the Underlying Truth. You agree that I made an excellent point, then you go on to totally agree with Actually, the poster who said "NEVER VOTE FOR AN INCUMBENT." Think of how counterproductive it would be to your cause if YOU were elected to a council, began making a difference reducing or eliminating budget requests, pooh-poohing silly luxuries that some cry are "essential," saving your borough some serious tax money, and then YOU get voted out as a detested INCUMBENT who is too free with taxpayer money? Your replacement would probably be a free-spending Leftist, but the voters won't bother to tell the difference! What irony!
