I think that all of you people are wrong about this... this is people's lives.. this is people's family's that are hurt and are suffering and you are fighting about it maybe step back for a second and realize that accidents happen and you can not change what happened... instead of fighting about it maybe you should be praying and thinking about the family who just lost a daughter or a granddaughter or a second cousin... it's not right to blame anyone for what happened.. it was a mistake an accident and that's what makes us human... don't blame someone pray for someone who has witnessed a tragedy or lost a love one... get over yourselves it's an accident....

They were probably on the road because the school could not afford to let them amd the bus driver stay the night and the parents had shelled out a lot of money for the trip already.
So...a young woman dies because the school is too cheap?

They were on the road because it makes no sense to waste one night of a tight schedule sleeping while stationary. IT is common to travel by night, this way you get to the destination in the morning and are ready to to do whatever the plan had to do. Adding mandatory hotel stops simply makes the trip take longer.
It is no longer 1956. Life has a faster pace.

When are we going stop sending school kids willy-nilly for extracurriculars?
As someone perhaps far wiser said in a later post: "It is no longer 1956. Life has a faster pace." Oh, wait, you answered your own question!

And, I would add, these occasional really sad outcomes do not negate the fact that school trips are great opportunities for our kids to get a bigger "world" view that helps them understand and accept others from different areas and different cultures.

Perhaps some of the posters on these forums should get out a bit more!

Then I guess we'll be rethinking that if indeed the driver fell asleep, eh?

Many people work graves every day. Many OTR drivers drive all night. The fact that one individual may have fallen asleep does not mean we need to go back to the exclusively diurnal system of Opie and Aunt Bee.

Extracurriculars may be a good thing (at least for some kids). This does not change the fact that this is not a core responsibilityof a school district. Educate the kids. Let their parents make them in to "well rounded" people.

If I'm not supposed to assume that the driver fell asleep, then you should refrain from assuming that the bus company was doing everything properly, that the driver in question was accustomed to the shift and hadn't been driving the kids around all day.

Let's see an old bus driver, cheap maintenance and leaving early in the morning. A recipe for disaster.
Well at least someone is making money off one dead individual - Larson Funeral Home on 3rd Street.
Mr pretzel, The age of the driver doesn't have a whole lot to do with it. If he or she is medically qualified, they are fit to drive. It is true lack of sleep , and the hours of driving are factors for anyone, not only in this case. but according to safestat Richard's has an excellent maintenance record. So trying to blame in on maintenance is way off base. One of the things when you are in the transportation business you work to strive to meet the needs of the customer. It is the company's to do this safely,. This was a very unfortunate accident I feel sorry for the family, school, and every one involved. For those of you not involved in the business, It's easy to point fingers and Give blame. Just let the people do their job and wait til the facts come out. And if you feel 69 is to old to be driving, remember that when you get their. I know and work with many people in their 60's and they are safer drivers then people in their 30's & 40's
