Gahanna schools receive 'excellent with distinction'

Full story: ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Gahanna-Jefferson school officials are thrilled with preliminary results of the state report card, showing the district with an A+ rating that means "excellent with distinction," an improvement of one level from 2009-10. "We're excited to move up to excellent with distinction," superintendent Mark White said.

More BS........Ohio has some of poorest educated students in the country, proficiency requirements are decided by who? They may be catching up to the norm but have a long way to go.....Virtual schools is the wave of the future..........video cameras should be required in every classroom in the state with digital voicerecorders, to see what teachers need to be fired or reeducated for substandard teaching and knowledge and to reward those who excel. If the State of Ohio considers highschool graduates that can't even fill in a legible employment application proficient then then the whole public educational system needs to be overhauled..

I do agree 100%.....but....as one teacher told me several years ago, it's not about knowledge and the ability to teach.....it's about "you kiss mine and i'll promote yours"

Funny you never see a school getting a less than excellent report. Is excellent the bottom of the heap ? Still I understand it cost a butt load to run a school. We spend billions on military and peanuts on education.

Why is it when the school is having problems... the teachers excuse is we only have 6 hours with your kid 5 days a week - its the parents fault.....

But when the school gets a good report the teachers/kids get the credit but nothing is said about the parents.

Hmmmm.....

Do you understand that the military is one of the main reasons that you have the right to post anything you want?

They're dumbing everything down so the blacks and wigs can pass, and they'll not be held accountable.

Did superintendent Mark White really say "I'm so impressed they were able to focus on student achievement?" Specifically mentioning Senate Bill 5, really. Someone should remind him that focusing on student achievement is the school district's job. Apparently he is surprised they were able to educate our children with all of the time they spent worrying about their precious union. Unbelievable.

Thank you for making my point on my earlier post.

When the school is doing bad - its the parents fault

When the school is doing "well" its the teacher doing.

I will here, right now thank the "teachers" that helped the most to teach me how to read.

THANK YOU MOM AND DAD!!

I could not agree more with Mike's comments. As a teacher myself, I hope that my influence on a student is a "close second" to that child's parents. I wish that all of our students came from positive family environments, with an emphasis on academics 24/7.
It's usually the family structure that teaches values like being on time, taking responsibility, and demonstrating a strong work ethic. If those traits enter my classroom on the first day, I feel very fortunate.
If those traits are missing or infrequently demonstrated, I have some additional work to bring the students up to speed. If I model these things on a daily basis, I hope to teach a few non-academic skills in the process of teaching my academic content.
