Anyone selling true Black Grouper rather than Gag Grouper should have known. Black Grouper is known to contain Ciguatera and any Florida fisherman should know that although it's labeled Black in a store, it's supposed to be gag.

First the invasion of the Lionfish, now the tainted grouper fish.
They are starting to get us back for overfishing all those years.
I see a SciFi movie coming soon.

Sounds to me like fishing tournament winner wannabe's caught these tainted fish. Stick to catching your grunts and don't sell your fish.

Dr. Rumack: The life of everyone on board depends upon just one thing: finding someone back there who can not only fly this plane, but who didn't have fish for dinner.

Elaine: Surely you can't be serious.

Dr. Rumack: I am serious. And don't call me Shirley.

florida/bahamas/hawaii is an endemic area, especially in the summer. this is the most under report story around. toxin is 1,000 more toxic than arsenic and highly concentrated.

..."avoid grouper over 5lbs"?????? Virtually impossible. Legal grouper sizes differ, however, in the Atlantic, 24" on gags and blacks, 20" on reds, yellows, scamps. Its tough to even catch these fish in our overfished waters, let alone get one over the size limit and under 5 lbs. Oh the lack of research performed by the SS when they write an article keeps us all coming back for more.

Isn't there a maximum limit on the size of the whole fish before one starts worrying about ciguatera? Like a couple of pounds? Of course, if this was a monster fish, I'd follow the advice of the legendary chef Emeril Lagasse..."take the lamb!"

To Al Sharpton, Thanks for the chuckle!

To the Sun-Sentinel, We (Florida Natives) have long known of the risks of eating non-pelagic fish caught in tropical waters especially Groupers and Barracuda, and especially in the summertime.

Ciguatera is a naturally occuring toxin that is produced by certain algaes that are consumed by smaller fish which are then consumed by larger fish. Over time these toxins will bioaccumulate in the flesh of the top predators. There are relativly common and inexpensive tests available now that will immediately detect high levels of ciguatoxin and any responsible fishmonger would test his fish before selling it to the unsuspecting public.

That said however, it is irresponsible of you to name Whole Foods in this article without solid evidence that this fish was purchased there. If I were Whole Foods I would be seeking legal counsel.
