"...massive drug bust resulting in the seizure of $1 million in pot plants, according to San Jose police."

A Million bucks, really? 500 indoor plants @ 1 oz each = 31.25 lbs. 31.25 lbs. x $3000/lb.=$93,750

If the growers successfully harvested and sold all of their pot, they would make less than $100,000. That's quite a bit, but a far cry from a $1,000,000. I wonder why kids think the cops are full of it?

California public services wither on the vine for lack of funds (this morning's Chronicle reports a staggering $20 billion deficit facing state revenue), but boy oh boy, let the authorities so much as get a whiff of marijuana, and a fleet of golden Cadillacs shows up to whisk the Keystone Kops off to their glorious pot bust !

I really don't understand why ganja is the big issue and the "drug" that's always being brought up and busted. Why do I never hear of meth busts? Cocaine busts? Tweekers being busted with their meth labs? Aren't those the the real drugs that we should be worrying about? I was just jogging through Louden Nelson park and saw a lady smoking crack in between cars. The cops were probably hard at work harassing a homeless person or hanging out at the Bad **** coffee shop.

When 500 plants are being pulled out of a rental house in San Jose, that is a problem. Most of these grow houses in San Jose are rented houses. Most of the grow houses are rented by either Vietnamese or illegal Mexicans. They don't live in these houses, they don't care about the houses. In fact, they destroy the house, leaving inches of dirt and compost in the ground, drilling holes into water lines, knocking holes in the walls for ventilation, tap into PG&E lines, etc... The owner of the house is then stuck w/ a bill they cannot pay ($100,000 is a kind estimate), not to mention the fines, etc...

Now if you're going to grow pot in the backyard for your personal use, than go for it. I'm not one to judge, however, when people are destroying investment homes to grow weed for the purpose of selling it to make a profit, I do have a problem with that. I have even more of a problem with that when they are here illegally.

Mark my words, with the housing situation as dire as it is, grow houses and labs are going to be popping up all over the central valley.

Why aren't tweakers being busted? Because you voted for Prop. 36. which in essance took the crime out of narcotic use. So a homeless person is seen smoking crack. A cop cites them. They go to court. The judge gives them Prop 36. They then have to go to mandated treatement. They cannot be arrested, they cannot go to jail. They are allowed to fail 3 times before they spend a day in jail! Why would a cop waste his time citing someone, knowing they are not going to go to jail, are not going to learn their lesson, and are going to be out smoking crack, living in their van, and doing the same thing the very next day?

Saddened by Society--do you know how dumb you sound? The cops just made a major bust where someone got shot and you are more worried about some lady smoking crack. Let's check our priorities here. To all you who think weed is not a problem here you go. People are getting shot over it. These are the people growing it and selling it and the ones you support. Think about it next time you light up your harmless plant.
As far as the lady smoking crack at the Louden Nelson part, what did you do about it. You were right next to the police station. I'll bet you just ran by. You want to complain about the cops but you don’t want to do anything yourself. Well how about next time you do your civic duty and report that crack head to the police. That would be one less idiot we would have to deal with down on the mall.

If pot were legal and it cost say $50 of oz. (big tax like alcohol) nobody would be shot in the street. There would be no money in pot. It's not like you can't get some if you want some. But as an illegal drug we create profit and a reason to steal and kill. Doesn't make any sense to me. And the laws we have now are not working. They are the cause of all the extra problems.

You do realize that our prisons are overcrowded due to the minumum sentencing laws passed for non-violent drug offenders (federal).

Most of the 1st world treats addiction as a medical issue and NOT criminal. Your suggested approach has already clearly failed, why not try the alternative as Europe has been doing for years?

I'm not sure I understand your point. Are you talking about federal sentencing? If so, when was the last time someone was arrested federally for smoking crack, meth, etc...? It doesn't happen.

Secondly, I'm not sure what approach I suggested. I was specifically explaining to another poster why police may not be arresting someone for smoking crack between cars.

My approach? One strike and your'e out. If you are arrested for using or being in possession of a narcotic (i.e. meth, heroin, cocaine, etc) and it was under a specified weight (possession and not possession for sales), you would be arrested, sentenced, and then released. Your sentence would be a 3 month suspended sentence. You get one shot at rehab, with a court date at the end of the program. If you blow that one shot, you get those 3 mo's in the pokie. If you complete the program, the 3 mo's disappears.

The current system (Prop 36) is a complete and utter failure, giving the Judges too much power and control to "force" people into rehab that don't want to be there or aren't ready to get their sh_it together and it's costing us a lot of money.

Did somebody get shot? Never mind. Please carry on with the marijuana agenda. That's what really matters. Your weed.
