Santa Cruz is infested with neo-Nazis and anti-Semites. They've been active since buring Israel's flags on the UCSC campus in 1983. The Jewish "Home of Peace" cemetary is just blocks away from that radical institution; so these fascists trash it too. Our police and the FBI still haven't the terrorists, who threw a molotov cocktail into the Hillel House on Cardiff Place a couple of years ago.

Now these brownshirts spray paint their swatikas all over the west side. Enough is enough...

As one who is often critical of Emily Reilly's record in office, I condemn this action against Reilly's business. As someone who has been convicted of vandalism myself (defacing the sidewalk with SIDEWALK CHALK!!) I deplore vandalism. There are plenty of means, all legal, for expressing disagreement with Ms. Reilly's policies. Letters sent directly to her, letters to the editor, non-violent picketing and protest, speaking out at City Council meetings during oral communications, and venues such as Free Radio Santa Cruz and Community Television are a few. I wonder if this was done by the same folks who scrawled anti-semitic graffiti at Oakes College last week?

I honestly doubt that the people who did this have the intelligence to actually understand what and who they are doing this to.

While I don't support Emily in the Assembly or Council NO ONE deserves to have their property defaced. I am sorry this happened to you Emily.

Emily,
I am so sorry this happened to your bakery. I really don't understand what vandals think they are accomplishing. I wish they understood how stupid it makes them appear. Santa Cruz is lucky to have you there. And yes I voted by absentee ballot as I said I would.

Can the penalties for vandalism (real, not chalk on a sidewalk) be increased to where they may be an effective deterrent?

A possibility is that this is "pressure" being applied by the union people that want to build the La Bahia project.

"Vote our way and your business will remain.... calm. And nothing bad will happen to you or your family."

Perhaps I watched The Sopranos too much. But it could be possible.

Is that why you sat by and said nothing when City Hall was defaced by your homeless crew?

CRAIG WRITES: "Is that why you sat by and said nothing when City Hall was defaced by your homeless crew?"

BECKY: My "homeless crew" as you put it, were at City Hall from Aug 12, 2007 - Aug 19, 2007. The vandalism you describe happened a month later by parties unknown. While I agree with the anti-Sleeping Ban message, I deplore the vandalism. That kind of protest creates an unwanted backlash and I do not support it.

While SCPD spokesman, Zach Friend claimed that vandalism occurred at City Hall while our protest was ongoing, a public records request submitted for documentation of that vandalism was returned with "no known records." In other words, Friend simply manufactured that incident to defame the protesters and to distract from our issue with a law that bans sleeping at night, but ONLY if you are homeless.

REPLY TO DAVE: Call me naive. Call me hopelessly out of touch. But if I had to buy illegal drugs today, I don't know ANYONE I could buy them from. Perhaps I do know some drug dealers, but I am not aware that they ARE drug dealers. Meth is a drug you should never even try once. That is my position.

Well Becky, in that case I would then have to echo the comments of others and call you a liar.
For starters marijuana is illegal and we all know you know how to score that one. As for others, look at those around you.

Certainly there are anti -semitic and people in Santa Cruz, but when they burn the Israeli flag at UCSC, it is not anti- semitic, but a protest against Israeli policy.

BECKY: Today, anti-semitism is clothed in anti-Zionism. SOME anti-Israel protests are anti-semitic. Here is how you tell the difference.

Anti-semitic comments defaming Israel, the Israeli govt. or Jews contain one or more of these elements:

1. Demonization such as comparing Israelis to Nazis
2. De-Legitimization --such as calling Israel "a foreign occupation" or claiming that Jewish presence in the Holy land DOESN'T go back 3,500 years
3. Double-standard such as accusing Israel of "genociding the Palestinians" when ACTUAL genocide is going on in Sudan without a peep from the same individuals

Critizing the Israeli govt. is not anti-semitism by itself.

BTW JEWS can be anti-semites too!

I guess all the jews who disagree with the policies israel persues are anti-semites?

Sorry, there are real anti-semites in the house, and they are different from legitiate critics of israeli policy.

Anti-semitism disgusts me, as do the policies of israel.

We divide the israelis and palistinians in to two groups and we say one is bad and the other good, depending on which side they are on.

I divide the region in to two groups as well, adults and children, and all I can say is that all of the adults are failing all of the children.

BECKY: I never said that Jews who disagree with the policies of Israel are automatically "anti-semites." In fact, I clearly differentiated between legitimate criticism of one's government and anti-semitism. You chose to ignore that and lapse into the bumper sticker mentality of ALL those who have blind-sided views of Israeli polices.

As for "Israeli policies" which you seem to condemn with the same brush as you rail against "anti-semitism," I don't see where your ire is located. Israel has been under siege or attack for the past 60 years. Yet despite this, they have managed to build a first world nation, turned their country into an exporting nation, have a diverse population which protects Jew, Christian, and Muslim alike, and is forced to protect itself from daily Palestinian rocket attacks and terrorism. So when you are bashing Israel, please be a little more specific.

Let me guess. You have issues with the fence?

Yah, everything is rosey in israel, except if you are brown.

The israeli peace movement has never been more active, and for a reason.
