I ran the Wharf to Wharf for the first time yesterday. As I jogged past seabright beach, I reflected on how great it was too see so many people turn out for the event. The bands were fantastic and you could tell they were just as excited as the runners, people clapped and smiled and generally seemed to be having a good time..... Then I got to the first water station where I watched in horror as people just tossed their used dixie cups onto the ground. HELLO people! Yeah there may be crews doing clean up after the race, but there were plenty of trash bins around. I really couldn't believe that these runners couldn't take the time to get their trash into a the trash can. Not to mention, that dixie cups are waxed, and can be slippery on pavenment that has been soaked by hoses and unfinished water that people just tossed out. I would hope that people who take part in these types of evens would be a little more respectfull. Boo on the running litterer!

I'm not sure how much you know about running protocol, but it's expected that faster runners will throw their cups and/or remaining water on the ground...they can't be trying to make it into a trash box that is on the far right if they're worried about their running time- that is expected. However, if you were with the joggers and walkers, and still witnessed this type of behavior...shame on them!

I noticed a LOT more runners than in previous years. I've been in this race since 2000 and there were so many people that at the .5 mile mark everyone just HIT THE BRAKES. Incredible.
It was a lot of fun, although I had to run slower than I wanted to because of the crowds. Definitely looking forward to next year!

I ran in the first Wharf to Wharf as training for the upcoming cross-country season. They handed out little ribbons with "Warf to Warf run" printed on them-hilarious. My buddy's brother Mark McConnell (a Soquel & Stanford grad) was the winner.
