A 67-year-old woman has been identified by the San Mateo County coroner's office as the trespasser who was fatally struck by a Caltrain vehicle in Burlingame Friday evening.

Lauren Redmon was struck at about 6 p.m. after attempting to cross the tracks north of a pedestrian crossing between the Burlingame and Broadway stations, both in Burlingame, according to Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn.

The northbound No. 373 Baby Bullet train, which had last stopped in Redwood City, wasn't scheduled to stop again until Millbrae and was speeding through Burlingame when the pedestrian was hit.

Within a few minutes, a conductor announced a trespasser had been killed and the train would be held until further notice, prompting a flurry of cell phone calls among riders telling friends and family they would be running late.

Shortly afterward, the train's engineer, who appeared agitated, was overheard saying he had sounded the horn to alert the pedestrian but to no avail.

By 6:45 p.m., riders were being let off the train through the rear car. They trudged through the gravel along the tracks toward California Drive to find another way home.

Meanwhile, at the Burlingame station a short section of Burlingame Avenue was cordoned off between California Drive and Carolan Avenue as the death was being investigated by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, which has jurisdiction over the Caltrain tracks.

Sheriff's Sgt. Roger Copeland said a witness had told investigators the pedestrian had walked around a closed yellow pedestrian gate at the northern end of the Burlingame station before she attempted to cross to the southbound platform.

Parents and teenagers on their way to a football game at Burlingame High School just a block away from the station were allowed to duck underneath the yellow police tape and cross. Many asked what had happened and gasped when they saw the body covered by a yellow tarp.

Lauren was 60, not 67. She was on her way to a Burlingame Class of '66 reunion celebrating the 60th birthday of the class members. The reception was in progress at a private residence in Hillsborough and she never made it to the function. The members of the class learned about her fate at the dinner dance Saturday night and were saddened and shocked by the news. Ms. Redmon was hearing-impaired and an inspiration to her fellow classmates.

How cruel, she was deaf, why don't we do something to make sure this never happens again - like some kind of light system I don't know - do something, all people need to be thought og for safety

i must say, very sad... however i really don't think there is any additional things that can be done, she purposely went through a gate with a wornign sign on it

Always frustrating and very sad to lose a loved one or dear friend like this. But I have to agree with "Burlingmae". Those gates are in place for a reason and everyone should exercise caution around train tracks. She should have seen the train coming; lights flashing - something. Her passing was a preventable tragedy.
