The San Mateo County Deputy Sheriff's Association has issued a statement supporting Sheriff Greg Munks and Undersheriff Carlos Bolanos, who were caught in an embarrassing episode that found them at a Las Vegas brothel. <br/> <br/>"While the (association) certainly does not always agree with Sheriff Munks and Undersheriff Bolanos' decisions, we have found both to be proven and effective leaders," said the written statement from the union's executive board. <br/> <br/>The union, which represents more than 400 deputies, correctional officers and others, noted that the sheriff and undersheriff were traveling to Las Vegas on their own time and there is no proof so far they broke any laws. <br/> <br/>"We do not foresee these recent events affecting our ability to work effectively with Sheriff Munks and Undersheriff Bolanos. We remain confident in their abilities and leadership and we look forward to moving past this incident," the statement said. Union officials declined to elaborate Friday. <br/> <br/>The statement adds to a chorus of official voices in the county that has responded to the law enforcement officials' gaffe with praise for their integrity and abilities. Seven days after Munks and Bolanos were swept up in a police raid of illegal bordellos, there have been no calls by anyone in a position of power for an investigation into the facts surrounding the incident. <br/> <br/>Munks and Bolanos themselves have refused to answer questions about the circumstances of their visit to the brothel. Munks initially released a written statement apologizing and asserting that he mistakenly thought the brothel was "a legitimate business," but he will not say what type of business he thought it was. <br/> <br/>Instead, both the sheriff and undersheriff's offices have directed all questions to spokeswoman Lt. Lisa Williams, who has said she doesn't know details of the brothel incident. <br/> <br/>Board of Supervisors President Rose Jacobs-Gibson and Supervisor Jerry Hill are among those who have stood up for Munks and Bolanos, saying they don't see a need for further investigation of the Las Vegas issue. <br/> <br/>Two other supervisors - Rich Gordon and Mark Church - have said they're awaiting more information, and County Manager John Maltbie has asked the Controller's Office to see whether county funds helped pay for the trip to Las Vegas. <br/> <br/>But many more leaders - from state Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) to California State Sheriffs' Association Executive Director Steve Szalay - have responded to the controversy with two words: "No comment." <br/> <br/>Las Vegas police say they have no plans to investigate whether Munks and Bolanos broke any laws at the brothel because their raid targeted only employees, not customers. They are looking into whether the brothels were part of an organized crime ring that smuggled women into the country from Asia and forced them to work as sex slaves. <br/> <br/>Officer Bill Cassell said his department will not discuss the results of its questioning of Munks and Bolanos other than to say they behaved cooperatively and professionally. "We are not going to extend the curiosity in this in any manner." <br/> <br/> <br/>E-mail Will Oremus at [email protected]

Steve, Thank You for your posting.....
Your story is common in San Mateo County.
There is NO OVERSIGHT of anybody in the Law Enforcement Business.
The Sheriff Department and the District Attorneys Office pretty much do what ever they feel like, to whoever they feel like...

Yesterday the Edith Delgado Trial ended...The court room was completely filed standing room only with DDA'S there to support the prosecutor Aaron Fitzgerald. I was suprised to see so many DDA'S in support of a person/TEAM-MATE is more like it. I have always stated the DA had overcharged this 18 year old girl with 4 months driving experience. Judge Smith rasied her bail to $3,000,000 etc.
This Law Enforcement TEAM had led the PUBLIC to believe this girl was a danger to all of us.....The JURY did not agree....

One Juror has posted...This case should not have gone to trial...

I was suprised at the support when they had to have known, what I knew and what the JURY knew......What would cause so many DDA'S to support this behavior...

I understand the fear of losing your job...but how can anyone except the fact that the District Attorney was framing a young girl.
They knew the speed was 70MPH...How could they tell the public it was 110-120 MPH...its simple they lie and then support each other.

Best of Luck

I suggest to Steve White and Michael Stogner to keep the focus on Sheriff Munks'recall that that specifically addresses his Baker to Vegas lies of using public funds and curbing the press as his preferred crisis management tool and lack of candor about his detention by the FBI during their raid on the massage parlor/prostitution where the Sheriff wanted a "massage."

Steve and mike's personal gripes whether baseless or no are not the issue and they are distracting!

Jim Fox has prosecuted high-ranking police officials when there was evidence to do so. He prosecuted Atherton Police Chief Steve Cader for voter fraud. I trust his judgement.

The end result was 3 dead because some teen jackass decides to try to drive beyond her means. It just goes to show how stupid juries can be. Once again, Randy Moore paints a "poor underpiveleged minority" suspect as the victim. He got over when he defended the illegal baby shaker too. Why your support for her? SHe killed 3 people with a car? Unless it was one of your "lemons" you sold her family. BTW...CHP and Northwestern Univ speed calculations projected the speed at over 95 MPH...get YOUR facts straight. You're not selling another car...you don't have to lie here too.

"CHP and Northwestern Univ speed calculations projected the speed at over 95 MPH..."

As far as the trial is concerned, this is incorrect and was never part of the evidence.

One expert, who teaches Accident Reconstruction classes to CHP Officers, estimated the Mustangs speed at 70 MPH at the time of the accident.

The DDA's expert stated that it is impossible to estimate the speed of the Mustang at the time of the accident.

One of our instructions, in the 20 pages that we received, was that if evidence was presented that contradicted each other and you gave equal credence to that evidence, then you must accept the evidence that proves innocence.(On this point I actually believed the DDA's witness, I didn't care for the the Defense Expert's "scientific" conclusions, his variables were never explained fully as to how he made the jump to the 70MPH estimate).

Randy Moore never at anytime entered evidence or made reference to the social status, economic condition or ethnicity of Edith Delgado during the trial.

One eye witness indicated that Ms. Heffa over steered the Ford Explorer "which is the wrong thing to do.." (his words, not mine), but that was stricken from the record and not dicussed in our deliberations.

You have judged the defendant without spending a day in court, seeing any of the 30 or so exhibits of evidence or hearing so much as a word of actual testimony.

Your attacks seem to be on a personal level and you resort to a lot of name calling...what is your motivation? We returned a Guilty Verdict, do you understand that?

If being fair and open minded makes me "stupid juror" then so be it. By the way that's a requirement to sit on a jury, so you needn't worry about ever having to serve. It sounds like you think the Jury system as a whole is not needed...not sure you're going to get a lot of people to agree with you on that count.

I know I am on the wrong blog for this comment. For that I apologize, I get a little sensitive when someone calls me stupid without ever having met me.

Juror, don't get sensitive from these posters, especially the ones who don't identify themselves. There is only one group/team of people who are upset with the verdict, that is the same team who created/fabricated the historical story that the world has heard about Edith Delgado. The story that got Hon. Judge Thomas Smith to raise bail to $3,000,000.

Did you see or hear any evidence in the trial that warranted a $3,000,000
bail?

Thank You for your service.

I'm not sure if any of you even knew that a Judge Thomas Smith had raised the bail from $300,000 to $3,000,000....

I am interested in this subject because nobody asked the Judge to increase the bail......At least not in open court or by a motion......So I would like to know who spoke to or communicated to Judge Thomas Smith to cause him to increase the bail in this case.

Michael,

I can't help you as bail was never mentioned during the trial of The People of California v. Edith Delagado.

Nor was the potential sentence.

Nor was the fact that she had spent a year in jail.

There were at least 3 jurors that knew nothing of the case and had no idea that Ms. Delgado was incarcerated.

Probably for the best if you want Justice to be Blind.

I got a kick out of one of the bloggers indicating that "Justice is Blind", like it was a bad thing.

From a us.gov website:

"Lady Justice...The scales that she holds represent the impartiality with which justice is served and the sword signifies the power that is held by those making the decision. During the 16th century, artists started showing the lady blindfolded to show that justice is not subject to influence. From this, the statue earned the name Blind Justice."

I think we have a pretty awesome Judicial system. Not perfect, but it keeps the vigilantes in check.

Joe you are right on this case. James P. Fox did prosecute the Police Chief of Atherton for voting across the street in the wrong booth.

His one vote did not effect anything.......

Atherton and Menlo Park are next to each other. This high profile case demonstrated to all Police Chiefs and Public officials. Don't mess with James P. Fox or Steve Wagstaffe.

What did James P. Fox and Steve Wagstaffe do in the
Ernesto Smith case....The Federal Agent...Felony Hit and Run.

Joe here is a recent case brought against a Redwood City Police Officer described as retired...he retired after he got caught.

Barry Finch, 55, is charged with 18 misdemeanor counts
The infractions are alternative ways of charging the misdemeanors, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
If convicted, Finch faces up to six months per charge. 9 YEARS JAIL
NO BAIL...own recognizance.
Probation for former officer
A retired Redwood City police officer who illegally used the state criminal computer system ( GREAT BOOK The Octopus the death of Danny Casolaro describes the computer system.) last year to track his estranged daughter’s boyfriend was immediately sentenced to two years probation and 50 hours public service after pleading no contest to two counts.
This Redwood City Police Officer had no bail for 18 misdemeanor counts.
District Attorney reduced 18 to 2 counts no time served.

Mr. Fox is a political hack replacing good judgement with a political overlay. Because of his overzealousness, the DA's office refused to make any deal on my charges of voting at the wrong prescient.(Yes, that's what they called "Voter Fraud", the prescient I previously voted in was 1 mile further away from where I formerly lived) I was forced to go to a jury trial to resurrect my reputation. After spending tens of thousands of dollars defending myself, not to mention the tax payer dollars spent on this collosal side show, I was totally acquitted within a couple of hours of jury deliberation.

Steve Cader Thank You for posting your side.
Mr. Cader was the Chief of Police of Atherton.

James P. Fox abuses the oath he has taken. He has stated to reporters that he closes cases for his friends...."That case is closed." He does.

This will continue as long as there is no oversight.

You don't like it that the Jurors are able to post about their experience...

Hmmmmm I wonder why?

A District Attorney misrepresenting the truth for 11 months doesn't disturb you....Hmmmmm I wonder why?
