Author visits star's grave

Full story: Red Bluff Daily News

Back in the early 1960s in Queens, N.Y., when East Side Comedy came on Channel 5 or Channel 11 on Saturday or Sunday afternoons, Leo Gorcey would outwit, outfight and out malapropos bad guys at least twice his size as one of the original Bowery Boys.

I think its nice that someone would want to visit the grave of Leo Gorcey to pay their respects. As long as they don't deface the tombstone in any way and have respect for the cemetary property, I think it would be fine to visit.

This book is a thorough and well written documentary for anyone who is interested in the dead end kids/bowery boys or is doing research on the subject. Libraries should stock this as a reference book.

If you grew up during the Golden Age of Television (Late 40s and 50s) and watched the reruns of all those kids on afternoon television, you'll truly appreciate the facination that Len Getz has for this little piece of Americana. So far, a very facinating read.

Very cool that Len got to visit finally, and I have to admit to being a bit surprised at the simplicity of the stone. Leo was always the leader of the gang I wanted to be in.

I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Getz's book. I found it very informative and well written, and I particularly enjoyed the author's recap of the plot of each of the movies. I thought that the cast biographies and the photographs were some of the best things about the book, and I especially liked the memories of cast members contributed by their relatives. All in all, this book is a great read!

Wow! Getz's book is amazingly comprehensive in regard to interviews, pictures, information and stories on the actor's lives.....both then and now!
Leaves you a fan of the Dead End Kids, if you weren't before! Follow it up with a viewing of one of the movies, and it is complete. And to trek to Gorcy's gravesite........from the beginning to the "End". Getz really did his homework and extra credit..........the book gives new life to the movies and actors and their characters. BRAVO GETZ!!!!!

I knew nothing about the Dead End kids until I met Len Getz and bought his fascinating book. I especially enjoyed the biography section, which illustrates some of the hazards of early fame and success, and the often touching tributes of the adult children of the stars. I gave the book to two elderly aunts who had grown up watching these characters in Saturday matinees in the 1930s, and they were thrilled! It does make a great gift.

I had a limited knowledge of the Dead End Kids, having seen some reruns in the early 60's. I had no idea there were so many movies made and the impact these Kids had on America and Americans. The book gives interesting facts about the films and provides keen insights by the author on each of them. I especially enjoyed the historical information on the lives of the main characters. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about a fascinating part of American culture.
