A mother-daughter team embezzled funds from a Palo Alto physician, using some of them to purchase a home in Los Altos Hills, according to a recently filed lawsuit.

Dr. Joanne Blessing-Moore, an allergist and immunologist with offices on Welsh Road, hired Virginia Reyes in July 2000 as a front desk manager and later promoted her to general manager of the small medical practice, according to the suit filed Monday in Santa Clara County Superior Court. A year later, her daughter, Christine Reyes, was hired on as a part-time medical assistant.

The Reyeses embezzled at least $522,695, starting in 2003, according to the suit. As general manager, Virginia was in charge of issuing checks, paying bills and other fiscal responsibilities.

They are accused of writing checks to themselves; keeping cash from patients intended to pay for services; purchasing limousine services on the physician's bank account; and giving themselves unauthorized raises. They are also accused of writing checks to a business they shared called Flowers in Motion.

Some of the embezzled funds were used to buy or pay for property, according to the suit. Alfredo Reyes, Virginia's husband, owns a Los Altos Hills home on Robleda Road, according to a Santa Clara County grant deed from December 2005. Christine's boyfriend Danny Nasir also lived at the residence, county records show.

The Reyeses were able to hide their crimes by not paying taxes, making delayed credit card payments and providing personal cell phone numbers as office contact numbers, the suit alleges. "It (was) difficult for Dr. Blessing-Moore to follow or be involved with business issues," according to the suit.

The physician's mail was allegedly monitored and staff was asked to hide it. Blessing-Moore discovered the missing funds in August.

She is accusing the Reyeses of fraud, conspiracy to defraud, unjust enrichment, and breach of duty and loyalty. The suit also seeks to hold their home "in constructive trust for Dr. Blessing-Moore as a result of the embezzlement activities."

Both mother and daughter resigned this summer and could not be reached for comment. Blessing-Moore referred calls to her attorney Ernest Malaspina. The San Jose-based attorney said Thursday it would not be prudent to discuss the case.

The Palo Alto Police Department started investigating the case in October, court documents show. Police spokeswoman Sandra Brown said Thursday the department had no computer record of the case.

E-mail Melanie Carroll at [email protected]
I don't feel terribly sorry for Dr. Blessing-Moore. Her practice is busy and you'd think that over five years, she'd have done an audit at some point, right? This is similar to Hollywood stars getting ripped off by their agents, except that Dr. Blessing is much smarter than the average celeb.
If someone was handling all of your money matters, a $50 background check doesn't seem too spendy....
As a frustrated patient, it would have been nice for Dr. Blessing-Moore to be honest instead of cagey about why my multiple calls to the billing department went unanswered for months and months. Instead, she is dealing with fraud and frustrated patients...a double whammy which could have been avoided with a bit of PR. It might have even engendered sympathy amongst her clients instead of frustration.

I've read the article and wonder why the district attorney has not indicted these two socio-paths. They will do the same thing again to another unsuspecting, hardworking, employer. They should be in prison again. Maybe someone should call the district attorney and get them on the job. That is what they are paid for. I am sorry to see someone go through this and nothing is done about it. Shame on Palo Alto.

Next time your DA is up for election bring this case up. Maybe this family of criminals can be put away, that is assuming they already have not skiped town.

lock em up! teach them a good lesson but you can't teach sociopaths a lesson, they wouldn't care. just lock em up for a long time or they'll play with other people's lives over and over again...husband, wife and daughter!

I knew all people involved well--even hung out with Christine on several occasions with the other nurses in the office. She and her mom were always so odd and secrative. They used to tell us how they owned these homes in Atherton and how they had a flower business on the side and used to sell to COSTCO. We all knew they were lieing but they had complete control in the office. I remember the expensive clothes and jewels that Christine always wore and said came from her generous mom--she meant Dr. BM!!!!

Dr. BM trusted Gina to the nth degree and I'm sure it's a big shock to her to be ripped off by these two vultures. She a wonderful doctor and her patients loved her. Gina used to always complain that the patients weren't paying their bills on time (as she was pocketing their payments turns out). I also feel bad for the husband and boyfriend.

I wouldn't feel sorry for the husband or boyfriend. I'm sure, especially the husband knew what was going on when your wife and daughter has all these expensive things. Not to mention, he himself bought the house and expensive cars. All these people should be punished for taking advantage of unsuspecting people, especially since she has done this sort of thing before.

I see she's changed her name. Gina, that's a new one.

Anyone know the status of this case? I hope all four are in jail. Serves them right! There are a few people in this forum that these criminals took money from as well. You all should take your stories to the DA to strengthen their case.

I can't believe that Dr. BM hasn't pressed charges? I can't believe they're all walking free.

I've been told that there are more doctor's offices that have been ripped off and they have turned their bills over to collection agencies. I can understand how they would not have any friends or family that want to associate with them. This is a family of organized criminals. It is time for the District Attorney to do their job and have them arrested for their crimes. It must be easier to let the doctor do all the work to get her money back.

What is your DA doing that he thinks white collar crime is fine. The Reyes family has again got away with another one, and will continue to do this untill proper punishment is handed down.
It would be interesting to hear why the Dr. has not pressed charges.
On a side note Christins father and boyfriend are FAR from innocent.

You are right! The father and boyfriend are far from innocent. There's no way the father can play innocent and not wonder where the money is coming from.

Are they still living in the area? Does anyone know what they're up to or where they're hiding?

They are still around trying to plead innocent with their lawyers just like the last time. Hopefully, San Mateo DA is better than SF DA and puts them all in jail.

They are living in Los Altos Hills. In the house that the doctor paid for. Where is the Fraud Unit in Palo Alto? Where is the articles to follow up this one? Where are the Reyes's working now? What is the last name of Christine?
I know she is married.

They're around spending money that don't belong to them. I think the husband is an architect in San Carlos. You'll probably find them if you google their names around in those areas. One day the karma will come. It's amazing how they can live that way - stealing.

Were you one of the unlucky reps that slept with Christine? No offense to you, it's just that she tended to hop in the sack with just about every rep that came through the door......or at least she wanted to!!!

No I'm a girl. I thought she just liked to flirt and tease the boy reps only, since she had a boyfriend and let everyone know about it.
