A mother-daughter team embezzled funds from a Palo Alto physician, using some of them to purchase a home in Los Altos Hills, according to a recently filed lawsuit.

Dr. Joanne Blessing-Moore, an allergist and immunologist with offices on Welsh Road, hired Virginia Reyes in July 2000 as a front desk manager and later promoted her to general manager of the small medical practice, according to the suit filed Monday in Santa Clara County Superior Court. A year later, her daughter, Christine Reyes, was hired on as a part-time medical assistant.

The Reyeses embezzled at least $522,695, starting in 2003, according to the suit. As general manager, Virginia was in charge of issuing checks, paying bills and other fiscal responsibilities.

They are accused of writing checks to themselves; keeping cash from patients intended to pay for services; purchasing limousine services on the physician's bank account; and giving themselves unauthorized raises. They are also accused of writing checks to a business they shared called Flowers in Motion.

Some of the embezzled funds were used to buy or pay for property, according to the suit. Alfredo Reyes, Virginia's husband, owns a Los Altos Hills home on Robleda Road, according to a Santa Clara County grant deed from December 2005. Christine's boyfriend Danny Nasir also lived at the residence, county records show.

The Reyeses were able to hide their crimes by not paying taxes, making delayed credit card payments and providing personal cell phone numbers as office contact numbers, the suit alleges. "It (was) difficult for Dr. Blessing-Moore to follow or be involved with business issues," according to the suit.

The physician's mail was allegedly monitored and staff was asked to hide it. Blessing-Moore discovered the missing funds in August.

She is accusing the Reyeses of fraud, conspiracy to defraud, unjust enrichment, and breach of duty and loyalty. The suit also seeks to hold their home "in constructive trust for Dr. Blessing-Moore as a result of the embezzlement activities."

Both mother and daughter resigned this summer and could not be reached for comment. Blessing-Moore referred calls to her attorney Ernest Malaspina. The San Jose-based attorney said Thursday it would not be prudent to discuss the case.

The Palo Alto Police Department started investigating the case in October, court documents show. Police spokeswoman Sandra Brown said Thursday the department had no computer record of the case.

E-mail Melanie Carroll at [email protected]
I find it distastful and unprofessional for your paper to disclose personal info. to the public because you comb through court records to find an "interesting" case. How do you know what the status of this case is, or if your comments will hurt the physician's practice or her case. Shame on you.

Don't understand the negative comment about the story disclosing personal info. If the info was obtained from court records, that makes it public and not personal. And to answer the question, that is how they know the status of the case. By the way, the story going to print is the least of this physician's problems.
I don't understand the "sweep it under the rug" attitude. Information = Education.

Know the two people in question personally. Not much of a surprise! Too bad it took this long to get caught.

I know these two criminals also, the daughter still owes me 10,000 that was lent to her. Im sure they will both have fun in prison together, especially since her mother has already served time for a similar crime!

I am interested in the comments that were posted by Baby Huey. Could you please explain more? These two women need to be held accountable for their crimes.

Do you know what prison Virginia was in and for how long? Also, what did her daughter use the 10,000 for?

I feel sorry for the physician, she should have
check the background of these people before hiring them. Put all the people involved in prison and after there term, its all UP to the JUDGE.

This does not surprise me. Dr. Blessing Moore is an excellent doctor, but her business office has always been in complete disarray. A businesswoman she is not.
