Sunnyvale police are seeking a suspect who stabbed a 21-year-old man to death Friday night in what neighbors and police described as a large gang brawl.

At approximately 11:32 p.m., police responded to calls about the fight on the 1100 block of Ayala Drive.

Neighbors said the melee lasted roughly five minutes before Pablo Rosales, a Sunnyvale resident, had been stabbed between 14 and 18 times.

“It’s an ongoing investigation,” said Lt. David Pitts of the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety. “We’ve been working all weekend.”

After being stabbed, Rosales managed to flee the scene with his four friends in a white, four-door Saturn, police said.

But he died in the Hilton Gardens hotel parking lot in Mountain View, where the group, allegedly members of a Hispanic gang known as Surenos, called 911. Mountain View police responded to the call.

Some teenagers who watched the fight, but refused to give their names, said a group drove by, threw bottles of alcohol at them and later tried to fight them.

“The vato just jumped me,” one teenager said, referring to Rosales. “I didn’t even know who the guy was.”

The witnesses said they managed to fend the group off.

But as Rosales was returning to the car, another group, members of the rival Nortenos gang, intercepted him, threw him to the ground, started beating him with bricks and later stabbed him, witnesses said.

The witnesses, including a 19-year-old girl who was tending to a small memorial Monday with Rosales’ gang name “El Smiley” written on a piece of cardboard, said Rosales has three younger brothers and a 1-year-old son.

E-mail Banks Albach at [email protected]
Sunnyvale Police are really not doing their job. We don't see them as often. I see a lot going on. They should really clean Ayala drive all the way to Acalanes. The intersation of Ayala and Bernardo is not safe. One of these day's some child will get runover. The store that's in the corner of Bernardo and Evelyn should be closed it just brings bad people and all kinds of bad things they been robbed maney times. Cars are always speeding.
It's to bad and sad for the family my heart goes out to them.
Please Sunnyvale Police Clean up that side of Ayala Drive. Make sure Landlords are screening their applicants and not puting all of us in danger.
