The El Camino Hospital District recently started accepting applications from those interested in filling the board seat that will be vacated next week by Dr. Dominick Curatola.

Applicants must be registered voters in the hospital district, which includes Mountain View, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and portions of Sunnyvale, Cupertino and Palo Alto.

Curatola, a cardiologist with a private practice in Mountain View and a member of the El Camino Hospital staff, was elected to the board in 1992. Last month he announced his resignation, effective Feb. 14. Curatola's accomplishments include returning the hospital to community control after an unsuccessful four-year experiment as a private, integrated delivery system and overseeing development of the hospital's $480 million seismic rebuilding project, district spokeswoman Judy Twitchell said.

In a letter to board members and the public, Curatola urged his former colleagues to select a board member "without a personal agenda, with an already satisfied ego and with a commitment to the preservation of the hospital as an independent district hospital."

The Los Altos resident said he resigned to devote more energy to medicine. "For those who may wonder, let me make it clear that there is no hidden message here," Curatola wrote. "There is nothing to read between the lines. ... This decision was not made out of frustration, not suggested by significant others and certainly was not influenced by anything negative or reactive."

A message left for Curatola with an assistant was not returned by press time Monday. Board Member Dave Reeder, a former Los Altos council member, said Curatola has done an outstanding job getting the hospital back to the way it once was.

Regarding the search for a new member, Reeder said his ideal candidate would be someone who has hospital experience or some experience relevant to the operation of the hospital. Someone with a background in construction or information technology would be a good fit as well, he said.

Applications will be accepted until March 1. The applications will be reviewed by the board at a meeting on March 14 and no more than five applicants will selected for interviews. The board plans to fill the vacant seat at a meeting on March 27.

E-mail Aaron Claverie at aclaverie@dailynewsgroup.com.

November 22, 2004. That was the day that our group showed up to work and was physically barred from entering the hospital by a group of thugs hired by Mr. Domanico. After 40 years of service to ECH and the district he had brought another group in and given then an exclusive contract. Our group had managed to work with the hospital all those years without a contract and maintain an open staff. Now the staff is closed, competition is reduced and patient choice is limited. Our group managed to find another home and is thriving and doing well. It was a real surprise to find this discussion forum and see all of these names again. They were ALL involved in what happened to our group. It looks like the scab is being peeled away and the festering sore beneath is being exposed. I will continue to follow with great interest.

Generally speaking, honest people use their real names and locations when they are making accusations. I think the fact that all of you are hiding under phony identities and locations says it all about the content of your posts!

Ms. Hamlin,
Are you the same Hatti Hamlin who does paid public relations for El Camino Hospital? If so, why did you not disclose this, and are you posting as an official spokesperson for El Camino Hospital?

From Mountain View Voice 3/25/2005
"Hospital board should affirm 'public' status

Editor:

El Camino Hospital CEO Lee Domanico finally disclosed his earnings for last year as $615,000 plus benefits. What is of concern to the public, beyond this high level of compensation, is that he and the hospital's board of directors repeatedly refused to divulge this information to citizens and news organizations for about one year, claiming they were not required to make this information public.

During his disclosure, Domanico said, "Determining whether or not El Camino Hospital is in fact a public agency or not is unclear." He acknowledged that the hospital is supported by tax dollars benefiting the hospital, and the hospital is receiving the Measure D funds. They are hiding behind the hospital's dual board structure.

I find the administration's notion that they are not necessarily a public agency offensive and dangerous. The hospital board and the district board should each immediately pass resolutions confirming that the hospital is a public agency and is bound by all public disclosure laws including the Ralph M. Brown Act and the Public Records Act. If they do not, the dual-board governance of the organization should be eliminated, and all control shifted to the elected district board.

In addition, either board should make available the information typically disclosed on 990 forms for nonprofit organizations, including the top five salaries and top five consultant payments each year, whether required by the IRS or not. It's just good government. The citizens must be able to keep an eye on the actions of their elected representatives. Len Doberne Honfleur Drive, Sunnyvale "

Hi again..
reiterating...
I am a freelance writer based in Oregon tracking the reasons behind Mr. Domanico's departure from Legacy Health Systems (Portland, OR).
Feel free to get in touch with me directly if you like.. achristopher@achristopher.com
While I can see there are a number of you still pretty steamed at El Camino's BoD including former CEO Lee Domanico, I am not seeing anything new here. The Mountain View Voice and El Camino Hospital's board settled the case re disclosure of compensation years ago.. And the other remarks may stem from the disappointment about how long it took for the hospital to reveal that information and also from some management decisions - specifically the dissolution of a long standing commitment to a team of anestisiologists (sp?).. that has since found a home elsewhere.... Not sure if there were legal issues involved there or whether there were grounds for a legal dispute because no contract existed to bind El Camino to that team..
Accusations are flying around here with few facts to back them up. And again, why are you guys still heated about El Camino and Mr. Domanico NOW.. years after he left town for another job? Is there more to this today that isn't being shared on this board?
I see old concerns being raised but nothing re present day. I would be happy to hear from any of you via email or phone on or off the record if you'd like to share more of your concerns, particularly present day concerns - stated facts backed with evidence - re Mr. Domanico. Because Mr. Domanico was the CEO of one of the largest health care providers in my state, I am curious as are others here why he left Legacy -- arguably quite abruptly with no explanation. He had signed a 3 year contract and was in his position for less than 2 years.
again, feel free to email me

I doubt that most if not all of these bloggers have attended any of the Board Meetings; I suspect that most of their thought process is based on hearsay in innuendo. If you want to educate yourself read to minutes, transcripts or visit the website to VIEW to meetings. No one on the Board recieves any compensation (other than sandwiches at meetings). If we were not committed to what is best for the hospital and community we would be doing something else. Learn, educate and get involved. Show some intestinal fortitude and come to meetings rather that cower on your computer. I doubt that you will show yourself; cowards! Both Curatola and O'Connor (along with Dr. Hoar) saved the hospital while you folks sat on your ass.

ECH Board Member Mark O'Connor was sentenced after pleading no contest to charges of breaking into the home of well respected Stanford oncologist Robert Stebbins.
He was also charged with stealing papers from Stebbins' house and vandalizing his office nameplate, his car and the door at his home. The multiple incidents took place over a period of six weeks.
O'Connor retained his position on the Board despite his conviction on four counts of misdemeanor vandalism, one count of petty theft, and one count of unauthorized entry of a dwelling.
O'Connor was sentenced to 30 days house arrest and 100 hours of community service, and underwent counseling for anger management. He was also required to make restitution to Stebbins for damages to his auto and home. O'Connor was prohibited from mail or phone contact with Stebbins, and from coming within 50 yards of Stebbins' home or workplace.
