I too was recently denied access to a "Super" sport. Both W. Hollywood and Hollywood sports clubs have recently been converted to "super" sports. I have no idea what makes it "super". Only thing I noticed is the towel service and maybe slightly newer machines in some. I've been to the brand new sports in Monterey Park and in Arcadia and they seem to have much better equipment if not equal to the so called sports in Hollywood.
I don't believe this is fair to call a nice facility such as the ones in Monterey Park, CA and Arcadia, CA regular sports but call the Hollywood locations "super" because of towels.
I'm definitely interested in a class-action. Any suggestions on where to start?
COUNT ME IN!!! Exact same situation and locations as you here (although I was "grandfathered" into the Hollywood location because I used it within the grandfathering period. But, I lose access to the WeHo location and another location in Santa Monica because I did not use them during the "grandfathering period." THIS IS DEFINITELY A BREECH OF CONTRACT!!!!!!!!!!

You are all just mad because you feel entitled to something that you don't deserve. When I signed up I was aware that if larger gyms were built then I would not have access if they were higher levels. I have sport and had a super sport option when I enrolled. I chose not to and now there is one by me in laguna. I can't be mad because they keep building , I have others five minutes in any direction that I have access to so boo hoo to all of you.
You are missing the point. We deserve what our contract stated. I joined 24 because I am all over the county and work out at multiple clubs. The sales guy actually talked me OUT of the supersport because there were only 3 in the nation, and I had the choice of 17 sport clubs in this county (San Diego).
If they built new SuperSport clubs after I signed, I would never feel entitled to go to them, as in your boo hoo example. But what is happening is that they are going into the existing sport clubs, painting and adding towels, and calling it a super sport to which I no longer have access. Not only do these clubs not meet their own definition of a supersport club, it is a classic bait and switch tactic to make the older, cheaper memberships upgrade. It is fraudulent to be sold the idea that we can get into x number of clubs, and then simply change the name of the existing clubs and deny members access.

I am in Los Angeles county. I too am strongly disappointed with the club changes to SuperSport. At the time I signed up the sales representative pushed the Active Club and Sport Club membership only because there were not that many SuperSport clubs in the area. They were "reserved for the high income areas". My contract was for $500 for 3 years and a $29 annual fee thereafter for life. The gym I attend the most is being upgraded to a SuperSport and I will be grandfathered in. Problem is, the others that are being upgraded in the area, I can't visit. What will I be up against if I move out of the area?

In all fairness, these are 2 options I would propose as a fair compromise:
1) Upgrade me to SuperSport at the cost of the SuperSport membership fee that I would have been charged upon initial sign up.
2) Allow access to all SuperSport gyms that were once Sport gyms and are now upgraded.
As stated before, I was sold on the non-SuperSport because a SuperSport was far and few which is not currently the case and is increasingly changing.
Yes, how do we start a class action?

It looks like 24 Hour Fitness will be getting it's due shortly. Crunch Fitness was started by disgruntled ex-24hr executives. In the last year, there are 3 built in San Diego while other gyms are failing and losing members to Crunch. Crunch is only $10.00 a month. The equipment is top tier and all new. Crunch is literally emptying 24hr.24hr is now stuck with the "legacy" clients who joined years ago, paid thousands up front and now pay too little to support their aging gyms. The way out is to play the upgrade game and get rid of the legacy crowd. The problem now is that Crunch is taking away the profitable $30-35 a month members. It already happened to a big independent gym near the El Cajon Crunch. Closed it's doors.I'm sure the target is 24hr Fitness. If you see things get uncrowded at 24hr,you may be out of a gym soon.

Wondering if you made any headway on this . I'm also in San Diego and have recently lost priviledges to 3 clubs I'd been to previously. El Cajon, Escondido, and now Balboa. THis has got to stop!!

I like your suggestions at compromise, Cyn, but you need to be covered for the clubs that are built (often right across the street) to replace existing clubs also. Have you had any success with your cause? Are there any other websites I should be aware of? thanks

In the San Fernando Valley (SO Calif) There are new gyms in Burbank, North Hollywood along with the replacement of the Northridge Sport gym, all of which are Super Sport. At the time I joined in 2004 I was warned not to get the one gym memberships and to get the all gym sport. I was told since there was only one Super Sport in the area (Anaheim) and no plans to build more, there was no need to pay the approximately $100 to include that one. They comment that was made was unless I need towel service when I visit Mickey Mouse don't waste your money. I paid 3 year $700+ agreement with $99 a year thereafter based on what I was told. Now the one gym I use is rundown and the only other one in the area available to me is a pain to get to and charges for parking. To use any of the three new facilities would require an upgrade of $19 a month (a 230% increase in annual dues)plus a one time fee to change it. Ladies and gentlemen this is the same issue as the class action suit that was settled in 2011. It is time for another class action suit.

Mike that may be true for your case. For many people like me we signed up for premier "all club" membership paying a large up front payment for a low ongoing rate and access to all new clubs in the future. Since I travel a lot this was a great deal. Now that they are renaming all the clubs to "super sport" clubs I am getting denied access to 24 Hour Clubs in some cities I travel to which is not the deal I signed up for. When I signed up over a decade ago they only had "sport" clubs and hadn't even come up with the term "super sport". 24 Hour Fitness feels like they do not have to honor the back end of those all club contracts by naming all their new clubs "super sport" which is fraudulent. Here in San Diego they have literally closed existing "sport" clubs and opened new ones across the street named "super sport". There have already been a few class action suits and I expect many more to come.

Same boat as you. Our numbers are collecting and adding up from a few to a mass. Keep up on your membership dues and let them break enough contracts!
