There's fresh crab, live from the tank, and bowls of miniature clams ready to pop out of their shells for sauteing in a spicy sauce with garlic and lime.

Yes, the best food in Malaysia isn't in the capitol of Kuala Lumpur, but in the state of Penang, more toward Thailand.

Prices are good because there are RM (Ringgit Malaysia) 3.23 or so to each US1.00.

Hopefully, people would explore more than just Georgetown.

My wife is from Penang so I've been there a couple of times for extended visits. The food by in large is excellent and I would say unique to the culture. Naturally there's more to the culture then just the food, and that's where it gets even more interesting...

hi all!

i'm a true blue Penangite here!

well, with Penang being a food heaven,it does effect it's inhabitants too!

When it comes to food,Penangites are an adventurous lot and wouldn't mind to try..they'd even go all the way from the city centre to some ulu beach front just for seafood!

But mind you,Penangites can be really 'lazer' when it comes to commenting on food! It's common to hear comments like "The tastes is not bad, just that it needs a little bit more salt" "Erm..would you mind adding a little more chilli in this?" "It's not sour enough!"

Penang is heaven to both halal and non-halal food, given its varied ethnic groups living there.

The Halal food sector of course,is largely occupied by Indian Muslims followed by Malays and Indonesians.

Indian Muslims have opened uncountable 24-hour Nasi Kandar outlets all over the island, but be forewarned : not all are equally good.Old Penang trademark outlets like Line Clear, Kayu & Craven top the list.

Next comes Malay food : curry fish head is a favourite, followed by terubok sumbat sambal.Kerabu (local salad) is a must try for 'ulam' lovers.Add a punch to your white rice with a spoonful of 'sambal belacan'.. it adds flavour to your meal :) I know of a favourite haunt : just opposite the Tg Bungah floating mosque!

What about Indonesian food?Well,if you have a pencant for Nasi Padang, the restaurant near Ismalia bakery offers a good variety of dishes and condiments to go with it.I just love the tapioca leaves cooked in cocnut milk and the sambal belacan.Smells like hell, but hey,it tastes divine! It's well known for it's asam pedas and ikan sumbat sambal. However,be well prepared as the bill's kind of on the posh side. It's ok to give a treat there, say once in a blue monn, but daily lunch there will surely make you go broke!

Non-halal delights line almost every street and corner of Penang island. Penang Sio Bak and Char Seow is a must try, they've got good ones at the Katz Street market.

Those who love Cantonese food, Tai Tung at Cintra Street is by far the best. They've got Yee Foo Meen and Char Hor Fan. There's another shop selling these, i forgot the name but it's a few minutes drive after Gama.

Fried Koay Teow; Penang's trademark hawker food, i available almost everywhere. One affordable but tastes average plate of Char Koay Teow can be found at Chulia Street,at the junction of the morning market.

Most Penang Chinese grew up eating Cantonese pastry and cakes. The shops selling the best ones can still be found at People's Court, along Cintra Street.

So people,do come with an empty stomach, fill it with Penang food :)
