NYPD stop and frisk cases up by 32 percent

The NYPD is on course to stop and frisk a record number of people this year -- more than 580,000 -- after a year in which the accusations of racial profiling led to a noticeable drop in the practice.

Stop and frisk, what a great idea. You know it works if the ACLU is against it.You should use crime statistics to determine who you stop.60% black,35% Hispanic,1% white,4% others.

Let's face it, the vast vast VAST majority of violent crimes in this city are committed by blacks and Hispanics. So why should it be a surprise that they are stopped and frisked most by cops? Similarly, since blacks and Hispanics engage in the kind of behavior which gets them into confrontations with the police more than any other groups in this city, then why should we be surprised when the vast majority of those shot by cops are black or Hispanic?

These are facts which the ACLU and the NYCLU ignore like ostriches with their heads buried in the sand. I can't believe these idiots are still moaning about race and the police. And it's always pointed out that "whites don't get shot anywhere near as much as blacks or Hispanics". But neither do Asians! The reason being, Asians in this city don't have a ghetto thug culture which creates the kind of neighborhood war zones in which cops HAVE to take a heavy handed approach.

I bet most of those in the NYCLU and ACLU are rich white liberals who have never lived in a high crime area in their lives. We should force them to live in one for a few months.

does anyone remember when this was a free country and not a police state? East Berlin would have nothing on us now, "Papers Please".

The cops are checking the folks who commit the vast majority of crimes. And guess what? It's the blacks and Hispanics. That's why blue-eyed silver-haired granmas don't get patted down when they're coming out of church.

Bangkok, go play in traffic, with a blindfold...

Are you people out of your mind... The "if you aren't doing anything wrong, you don't have to worry" agenda is a load of c-r-a-p-o-l-a.

This policy IS indicative of a POLICE STATE, it arrived after 9-11, when our Country's GREATEST ASSET was cheapened and trampled by such policy's instituted across the board by local, state and federal agency's.

To be stopped with no suspicious activity, loitering, criminal activity is AGAINST our RIGHT to be uninhibited by the STATE... IT also interferes with REAL police work, drains on it's resources and artificially makes CRIME statistics look good. The laws enacted to allow these invasions of our rights were done to thwart TERRORISTIC ACTIVITIES... but by extension have been abused, just like the F.B.I. and their admissions in the dreaded SECURITY LETTER searches.

You have nothing to worry about unless it happens to you. Reminiscent of England's policy in Ireland which created much distrust and ill will towards to military police tactics of stopping and searching and DETAINING individuals due to their RELIGIOUS association, these policy's too will eventually backfire, and many have already begun to do just that.

I am NO liberal, NO civil libertarian, but I am AGAINST ANY INFRINGEMENT OF MY CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS, PERIOD!

The cops are not randomly frisking folks on the street. These stops come from recent crimes in the area in which the detainee matches the description of the perp. The stops also come from folks that are behaving suspisciously in high-crime areas. These happen mostly in minority neighborhoods - where most of the minority vermin do their crime. This is no "police state". This is good police work brought on by the people responsible for the vast majority of New York's crime.

Old Wheat, BULL... I have been on the corner of 42nd St and Broadway and WATCHED the stop and frisk in action. No rhyme or reason, just stopping folks and asking questions then frisk and search...

So don't just PARROT or DEFEND unless you KNOW for a FACT.

They DO random stops, pedestrians, vehicles and the lot...

Problems are... if you don't go along with it, then you'll be detained, maybe even arrested.

Then the Judge gives a WIDE benefit of DOUBT to the Officers... You RIGHTS take a back seat... Most times, charges, if any get dismissed, so the biggest headaches are YOURS and yours only. The process nets some unsuspecting idiots who happen to have something in their possession which will get them in trouble with the law... relating to the artificially inflation of crime statistics...

Just like the Republican National Convention Tactics used here in NY City... Oh, I guess that was ok too? Walking down a city street and getting caught up in construction netting and hauled off to a detention center awaiting a judge, multiple court dates, lawyers,$$$, and time off from work to CLEAR you name... All charges, with the exception of one or two cases were dismissed against THOUSANDS...

POLICE STATE! You bet ya'...

If you get stopped by the police and you are doing nothing wrong than you have nothing to worry about. It seems to me that the people that are guilty are the ones complaining about their "constitutional right".

wrong. they should not stop and frisk whenever they want. if it happened to you, you would be bothered by it. they need probable cause. clearly an abuse of power.

10% of all NYPD "stop & frisks" result in arrests for outstanding warrants or for stuff found on the perp (guns, drugs, stolen property **** Sounds like a good deal to me. Those that complain seem to have the most to hide.

we live in a police state.
animals have more rights than a black man.
Vick got two years for killing a dog.
No cop ever went to jail for putting 50 rounds into a innocent black man.
You are crazy if you do not believe that this is a racist country.
Cop are racist.

That's because the command gives the police officers a quota for UF-250s (stop, question & frisk forms) just like they do for tickets. They send cops out on surges and they have to come back to the command with quotas met. They cops are then out on a hunt on the public. If you don't meet your quotas the sgts get on your back or you get your tours changed to something like midnights.

Crime isn't DOWN, on paper it is, due to the fact that the WAY CRIMES ARE REPORTED. Let's face the facts, all you LEO's out there will defend these policies that give you wanton freedoms that violate my RIGHTS.

You know it, and those of us who are not your average - don't know jack **** about my rights idiots - know it.

First of all, if stopped by an officer you have a RIGHT to question WHY. If asked for ID you have a RIGHT to KNOW WHY and REFUSE to OFFER it without an EXPLANATION by the officer. If asked to be searched you have a RIGHT to KNOW WHY AND TO REFUSE. DO NOT RESIST at any point the officer attempts to arrest you... All this then will be presented to the Judge, who by the way, will ask you WHY you didn't cooperate?

Problem is this, if you choose to EXERCISE YOUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS, you will need a lawyer...

If I am stopped by POLICE and I am doing nothing, then WHY was I stopped in the FIRST place, see some just don't get it.

Justifying it by low crime rates has nothing to do with it. The targeting program instituted in NY City has worked, BUT at the expense of infringement upon individual RIGHTS.

The police need to have a REASON to stop you, it's the LAW... Well was, up until recently. And you to some degree prove my point on the stops... Lol, walked right into that one - didn't ya'.

Just due to the fact I live in a statistically high crime area, does not and should not warrant justification to be stopped. Like a white man walking in Harlem, innocent enough? But to the NYPD it's more fitting the PROFILE of a drug purchaser... So then, while doing nothing wrong in my travels I an stopped and questioned by police... Or driving to my friends house in Scarsdale with my 10 year old jalopy... I get pulled over... So that's ok? WRONG! WAKE UP!

After the Bell shooting, any cop in NYC who does more then the BARE minimum should be sent to Lefrak for a psych exam. Do nothing and let them kill each other. The "good citizens" don't stand behind the cops when they shoot someone. Do your 8:35 and go home.
