Glad I have gas... Amazing that I don't hear any of those oil heat commercials anymore. You know the ones where they say oil heat is less expensive then gas?

I have a wood burning stove. I used it last year during the winter. Disgusted in Illegalhaven wrote: I'm checking out coal pellet stoves!

A few years ago I purchased a wood pellet stove. The pellets cost approx $4.50 - 5.00 for a 40lb. bag from Lowes, Walmart, and other locations. Key is you have to buy your pellets early (late summer), have a dry place to store them (garage), and be willing to lug the bags around. So far I've been very happy with the stove & highly recommend it.

I would get a wood burning stove, however the Town of Oysterbay will not allow me to cut down a tree on my "own property" to use as firewood. $75.00 for a permit to cut down a tree on your own property. Oh yeah and they send an inspector from the parks dept out for this. Property rights on LI are a thing of the past. You only rent your property you don't really own it. What did Bob Matherson always say "Get out of NY State before it's too Late" Bob was right.

I have shut off the burner completely. It will not go back on till late Oct. I take my showers outside by the pool. With cold water of course, but I got used to it.

And, of course, you'll spend the money you save on heating for air conditioning bills the other 7 months.

The payback is that you have to cut wood in the summer and you have to be willing to go outside and load the thing when there's an ice storm, blizzard, or cold snap.

Just wait until next year's school budget proposals when they'll say they have a deficite due to high oil heating bills. They'll raise taxes 20% and laugh all the way to the bank with their pension checks while the school superintendants rob them blind which of course will lead to anotjher 20% increase in 2010.

It's going to be a rough winter for a lot of people. We have a fireplace and I'm going to pick up a space heater or 2 to supplement that. We keep our heat at 55 in the winter (just to keep the pipes from freezing) and we wear a lot of sweatshirts and socks. I'm afraid we're going to see a lot of people, particularly the elderly people really suffering this year. Two winters ago I saw several elderly ladies at our local library. They would sit there all day reading and using the "free heat" because they couldn't afford to heat their homes, but they didn't qualify for the heating assistance program. What are those people supposed to do this winter?

And the crooked politicians, ALL OF THEM, could care less. All they want is to get elected and start taking the kickbacks. It's a shame, ON US, that we let them get away with years of willful neglect and incompetence so now we are paying dearly and will be for some time. Welcome to the realm of a 3rd world nation. We will be below that sooner than you think. Look at Frick & Frack running for president. Two complete incompetents along with Piggy Pelosi. Now that they have our money for fuel she wants to take the rest from our retirements, social security and savings and give it to illegals. Sounds fair to me. They all need a bullet.

Oh stop with the DNC nonsense already. Shoreham was not allowed to open for many reasons, not the least was the documented shoddy construction by the corrupt unions at the time. Then you get to enjoy all the festivities involved in evacuating LI in the (likely) event something went wrong. There's probably nothing inherently wrong with nuclear power, just not from a plant built by LILCO, on LI.

What did Bob Matherson always say "Get out of NY State before it's too Late" Bob was right. I live in the town of Brookhaven .I just cut five trees ,into logs ,split them into nearly three cords .I have an efficient wood burning insert which warms the first floor and if the doors upstairs are left open the heat rises . Last year used only 400 gallons of oil and kept warm. However for someone out of the house all day I would recomment a pellet stove .
