Felt the same way as you about the cost of living vs. incomes on Long Island. Luckily for me, I realized that despite its flaws, this is still America, and for the most part you have choices. I chose to leave Long Island four years ago and have never looked back. You could consider doing the same. Contrary to the Long Island culture teachings, it is NOT the be all, end all of American Living. There's actually a whole country out there with lots to offer.<quoted text>
Define "hard-working" because some people dig ditches and some people sit at a desk and both will say they work hard. Most of my driving is to and from work and on the weekends, to shop. I'd love to take a vaction, but I can't afford it living on Long Island, where $77,000 is considered low income. We Americans are waaaay too short sighted to see beyond our own problems and work towards a common goal. Unless it effects our wallet, we could care less. I blame the Baby Boomers for their culture of absolute consumerism and "me first" attitudes. Remember when they stood up and protested a war they thought was unjust mostly because they didn't want to fight and possibly die? Those same draft dodging weasels are sending their children to fight in a war we shouldn't have started so they could control the world's oil supply. It had nothing to do with terrorism, WMD or democracy. Now they control some of the world's richest oil fields and surprise! the price keeps going up.
Pardon my "leftwing" ramblings, but as a working class-slob, the only thing that's free is my opinion.

Back in the 1970"s[ when cars got 12 mpg] I read an atricle about gas saving motors and engines to wich an oil exc. said that higher gas miliage made no differance on price ;that they would simply raise price. and they did

Not all caribou fans like the grateful dead and it sure wasn't the tree huggers who sent 4,000+ of our troops overseas to die for big business and oil. They're too busy riding bicycles instead of polluting the air with auto emissions, so please take your rifle and turn it in to the police before you hurt someone other than yourself with all the hatred you spew. |

Not hatered pal truth, There is more oil in PA than in Iraq but the 60's left overs and their children rather than work spend 1/2 their lives in college riding bicycles and banging co-eds pressuring pol and america not to drill in the U.S. plus these groups like greenpeace are funded by opec as are the pols, So I pay 150.00 per day to fuel my truck to work to pay taxes. so maybe its you and your long hair bearded faction that is not wanted anymore. LONG LIVE JERRY MAN! P.S. Caribou are delicious with mashed potatoes and **** fat gravy |

yeah and they drive smaller cars and the Euro is worth a lot more than our dollor dear. Americans need to stop demanding BIG gas guzzlers - and wouldn't it be nice if the value of our money HAD value in the world market! Or even here would be nice. |
|
Yes, down here in Virginia (former NYS retire) their treating us the same. Prices increasing, but we can stop it by not
vacationing this summer. We all have to do it though. Or at least everyone refusing to fuel up on two selected days of the week, and keep on doing that. Don't go near the gas stations on those two days every week. Don't take day trips, stay at home. I know it's hard to do that, but if we want the prices to drop, we have to do it. |

I don't care what the gas prices are in Europe. I don't live in Europe. I live in a country that is spread far and wide. I have to drive to get to work, shop for groceries, etc. In Europe they have great public transportation. We have no other alternatives. We let a perfectly good rails system go to pot in favor of the trucking industry. The oil companies lobbying has kept alternative fuel source development at bay, but that really isn't necessary according to the Rand Corporation - the western US has triple the amount of oil that Saudi has, but the bleeding heart tree huggers are winning the battle of trying to tap this resource. This is 2008 and there are ways to get it out without hurting the environment.

Not buying gas for a day will do nothing as they know you will be back. What has to happen is everyone must stop buying from one company (Mobil,Exxon, whatever) and once they start hurting, they will be forced to lower their price and the others will follow. also, the people are are buying oil on the futurs market must stop! |

Can anyone afford to NOT buy gas? How many of us have bosses who would be okay with the whole office staying home to "stick it to the man?" I'd get in trouble and in this economy, I can't afford to lose my job because there are so few that don't involve leaf blowers or cash registers and minimum wage.
|
Back in my day, we called leafblowers rakes. Cash registers were called button banks, I used to wear an onion on my belt, because that was the styles of the times... |

Was that when nickels had pictures of bubble bees on them and you'd say "give me 5 bees for a quarter?" |
