I see people do dumb things like this constantly. I have no sympathy for stupidity. Drivers like this are a dime a dozen on LI. C'est la vie.

By Far the most Dangerous thing most Americans do, is to drive a car. Now that speed limits have become meaningless, unless you're driving down Hill Street entering snooty Southampton Village, where they posted a ridiculously new and lower, 25 MPH speed limit on this main highway some years back, the cops have been freed up to write up these twisted metal scenes. In the 'Joe-Sixpack' community of Riverhead an old farm road named, "Middle Road" that has become the By-pass Route for CR 58, better known as 'Big Box Alley', had its long posted 30 MPH limit raised to 40 MPH, and has killed quite a few already at various intersections. Funny how speed limit signs are altered for the worst of reasons here on Long Island. 25 is so SoutHUMPTON, can seem more 'exclusive', and the old farm road with its limited sight distance over blind curves, and hills and far more high speed traffic, gets raised so as to not inconvenience who ? The Undertakers ? Drive at your own risk, and consider that risk a whole lot worse than you now imagine it to be.

so let me ask - in your ENTIRE life, have you never done something stupid. there is not one of us out there who is perfect - so don't think you are.

I am not saying I am perfect. I have done some stupid things in my personal life, but not anything this stupid and inexplicable in any vehicle I have ever driven. He probably had the attitude, " that truck will stop for me ". Well, it didn't.

You are sick, mean and evil. May this man rest in peace and may you ask God for forgiveness. It never ceases to amaze the horrible people I live around and inhabit this earth with me.

Efforts to reach McDonough's family were unsuccessful. A message left Saturday at a number for Filiberto was not returned.

this is the dumbest thing for newsday to print.
the family just lost a loved one and they do not want to talk to the press. why in the hell would they?
there is nothing that anyone in the press can ask the family that would be worth the time and effort.
i know that if some moron reporter knocked on my door after a family member was killed, that reporter would be next in line FOR A HOSPITAL BED.
LEAVE THE GRIEVING FAMILIES ALONE!!!

Jeopardizing OTHERS is what continually goes on out there on the roads... This time it was "his own" fatality. However, mentally this truck driver will relive the crash for the rest of his life. A big something has been taken away from him.

Thats the press.. They always contact the victim. Just ignore them. and btw. All U Turns should be illegal... Its disgusting that someone can be so thoughtless and expect people to stop for him... a huge truck non the less.

Darren McDonough was loved & befriended by MANY close frieds. He always had a smile, a laugh and a kind word for everyone he met. He was a gentle, kind Man. A doting Father of five beautiful children and a wife that he committed himself to for a cumlative dating and marriage of 30 years. A true family man. He made a mistake, and whom has never... No one should ever judge anyone... This could have been be a family member or friend of yours... Would you leave such hideous comments? I think not...?

Darren, I pray for your soul, your Wife, children and extended family. May you now be with all of those that we all love, cherish & dearly miss still and always will... Till we meet again... God Bless You... Jo Ann M.B.

Nope. I've gotta say, that in my entire life, I've never found it smart to cut in front of 10 tons of moving metal (a truck). But your family obviously does this routinely. Care to do the human genome a favor and sterilize yourselves before you'd spawn some more and further contaminate the gene pool?

Your cousin was a moron. He could have killed somebody making a move like that. I grew up in Deer Park and I know the road very well, you don't just stop short and try to make a U-turn, especially on that road.
