Had a great run. I remember all too well waiting in line (like cattle) for a taste of their hot & sour cabbage soup.

funny, in california people value history and you can find very old famous institutions like pink's hotdogs and such.
here they tear down solid marble buildings to put up crap. its shameful. |

$15 for a lousy corned beef sandwich. No wonder it closed.

It wasn't a rip off when Wolfie Cohen owned it.

Truly a sad day in my family's life. Rascal House has always been a "must stop at" whenever we were in Florida for my entire 48 years!
|

|
First Wolfie's on 21st and Collins closed down in the mid-1990's and now the Rascal House. Sign of the times, I suppose. When I first came down from New York, I used to hang out at this dive bar called the 1800 Club. You would find everyone there, from the sublime to the ridiculous (with the latter trying to bum smokes off the former). However, they closed down the place about seven or so years ago to build a high rise condo (surprise surprise). Most of the places I would frequent during my early days in South Florida are now gone. However, we still have a select few places still chugging along that remind me of Miami circa 1967. Very few, but they exist. Though I loved their pastrami on rye and am sad to see the Rascal House go, I must admit that it wasn't my favorite deli. Wolfie's wasn't it either. There was a place on 67 St and Collins called Pumpernik's, I don't know if anyone remembers the place. That was a great place! When I first came down, I used to live on the Beach because it was cheaper. Go figure!

Honesly, when it costs more for the gasoline to get to, and return from, a good, excellent restaurant, than the high priced meals, themselves, NO ONE IS GOING!! Come on, all of you know what is going on. For you Older Folks, like me, remember how the Depression started.

Forget about it..I am glad there out of their, less accidents with the bunch of early birds driving at 5 MPH on your typical sundays...The worst is at 7 PM going to the Porter House for Happy hour and deal with the traffic going south a lot of old school pre owned.. Cadillacs and Lincoln coming out of that joint..

Finally! This place sucked anyway. The only thing worse than the food were the old farts eating there.

We would come here on New years day for many years we will miss this place

Althhough I have not been there in many years I will always remember the great food and very large portions. A lot of things change but not always for the better.

Great story. So sad to see Rascal House gone. The Starkman family is the culprit in this saga. They took the place over after our beloved Wolfie Cohen passed away and ruined it. All those recipes will now turn to dust thanks to those greedmongers. I will forever miss the wonderful food at Rascal House. Never will I darken the door of any establishment owned by the Starkman family or their Jerry's Famous Deli chain and I thoroughly encourage everyone else to do the same.

It is trully a shame what the Starkman's did to this historic landmark. I am in full agreement with you. They knew exactly what they were doing to the place, charging a ridiculous $14.75 for a sandwich. I worked there for 5 years and every year they raised prices. It makes me so sad that Rascal House is gone now.... to know that restaurant was to love it.... it was a tradition for so many. I am a lover of historic places and things, unfortunately Miami will soon have none left. In their place will be overpriced condos as far as the eye can see, all sitting empty and dark.... and restaurants that will NEVER make history or a mark in anyone's life the was this place did....

If you are lucky, you too will be an old fart too. |

Michelle, thank you for your words, you ache the very sentiment I've been trying to express all this time since the demise of Rascal House. All the best. Len in Ottawa, Canada

Pumpernik's was the BEST! They had locations on Biscayne Blvd in North Miami, and another one down in Pinecrest on S Dixie Highway. THEY did it right! I was sorry to see them gone too.
The best I've found lately, although they're smaller, is Roasters & Toasters. They're excellent!
