Just another case of homophobia. There were no school rules broken except offending the white flight, homophobic parents and administrators. No one ever got suspended for dancing to a song that said a girl kissed a boy. I've been to my kids elementary school where everyone thought it was cute when such was mentioned. When will we finally realize that homophobia is immoral and should be fought against. Thank god I don't live in a small town where this kind of attitude is pervasive.
Teaching our children that people who love each other, whoever they are, is just good parenting and teaching.

I honestly cannot believe that we live in the United States of America, and it is the year 2008, yet we are still promoting homophobic prejudice to our kids. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the song choice. The song does not demean women in society, nor does it have any curse or inappropriate words in the lyrics. These are the people in charge of shaping the minds of our future generations, homophobes. I am really sad that this student was disciplined over that. Out of all the other things that the school district could choose to use as an example of moral character, a song about a girl kissing a girl... It's a shame.

The only part of the song that seems objectionable is the first part, where a drink is mentioned and the girl seems to lose her inhibitions.

If that part wasn't in the song (that could be construed as a promotion of teenage drinking), I see no problem with it being played at a pep rally. Personally, I am sick of the homophobia that is rampant in this country. And, this girl wasn't in kindergarten or first grade.

Grow up, people.

This isn't news; it's pablum. If there is a crime here, it's that the twirler interviewed on Ch. 5 should lose a few pounds before going out on the field in that costume. As for civil rights/freedom of speech, no one seemed to mind when the current administration eradicated so many of our rights supposedly in an effort to protect us from terrorism.

Are you serious? you should come see our pep rallys at our school. We have Cheerleaders shaking their butts and being seductive and they haven't been punished. You should hear the songs they dance to.

I don't see why schools can justify punishing children for playing a song with gay/lesbian tendencies that only mention kissing and not for anything else. Meanwhile, they let the teachers off the hook for not supervising the squad and they don't punish anyone when much more suggestive music is played. They play songs like Splash Waterfalls by Ludacris where the lyrics read:
"You better not of came, she want to feel the pain
Then hear her scream your name - what?(touch, meee!)
Follow this dictionary, you're both some visionaries
Then do it missionary - say it (make love to me)
I hear 'em call da wild, and do it all the while
Doggy and FROGGY style - what?(touch, meee!)
You in between the sheets, lickin and eatin sweets
And what you find you keep - say it (make love to me)
You do it standin up, orgasms hand 'em up
Y'all just don't GIVE A F--- what?(touch, meee!)

Lyrics of this nature are much more provocative and do not belong in any school. The staff shouldn't be punishing the children for their own homophobic tendencies! All children's actions should be monitored, especially the ones making public performances.

What concerns me the most is when did it become okay for students to disregard the rules given by their administrators? These young girls were specifically told NOT to play that song during their routine, but decided to do so anyway. This belief by students that they can do anything THEY choose to do is what is wrong with our schools today. But lets also be fair, when they see on prime time TV, same sex kissing, etc (Grey's Anatomy, Brothers and Sisters, Desperate Housewives to name a few). Why should they believe there is anything wrong with that particular song? It's not the song I so much object to, but the fact they blatantly disregarded the administrators at their school.

No, they were told it wasn't a good idea. They were not told NO. These days you have to clarify.

The Girl on the news is the blame, she dissrespected the sponsor, the band director, the admistrators and the twirling line itself, by putting the new twirlers in that position to go ahead and do it, She is a senior and been twirling how long? Yes she knows the rules they are written and signed. She did this to justify her own desire to do it her way. She admitted on tv she did.So I see she needs punished taken off the line not the other two, Their first year on the line and are followers. The trouble never ends with the drama this child pours out.And to her Moms comment if this is all she ever does,,,lol..lets make a list...lol..Thank God she graduates this year.. Anfd for the band you Rock,, You keep playing you are doing a great job, don't let the twiler make you look bad.

The comments about the "size" of the twirler were mean and not necessary. These girls just made a bad decision and there are consequences to all decisions. I believe there should be some type of repercussions for their actions, but there should also be some consequences for the principal and sponsor for their non-actions. Where were they and why didn't they go and push the stop button when they heard the song being played and tell the twirlers to get off of the floor instead of letting them do their entire routine. The person that stated that no administrator would take responsibility for the situation is correct. No one at that high school in authority will take any responsibility, it will all be put on the girls. I agree with their punishment, but they are not the only ones at fault here. How sad that they are the only ones with consequences.

And another thing noticing all the comments on the weight. If you are practicing as you should how come you don't loose weight, You sre suppose to practice all week , all summer.. What happened to that. that will get you in shape. What they need is to bring back the good line that had 7 on it a couple years ago they were all awsome and some of thenm went to state through the years, Great twirlers there and they didn't disrespect athority.AND THEY LOOKED GOOD !!!!! And they could all TWIRL !!!And they worked for it to look that good too. And you could learn from that they respected the sponsors and band directors and priciple and the school and them selfs.

You call yourself Van Vandal Mom? Van Vandal mothers would be ashamed for you to carry that name. How old are you? There's enough self image BS out there without you having to say something like that. I'm ashamed. I think everyone is right.. you're the one with the personal agenda and started all this. Go pick on a cheerleader.

Wow, schools have changed so much in 6 years. At pep rally's we played anything we wanted as long as it did not have any cursing in it. But now since a song is supposedly "homosexually" oriented, its banned from being played at school? What has this "free" world come to? That's ridiculous.

Must have been a slow news day for this to be lead story last night. They've had their 10 minutes....no closer to 5 minutes of fame and will just as quickly be forgotten.
