half inch hole usually works on most. big chunck of lead but I would make the second or third round A round nose 200 grain bullet.

It is clear a lot of you don't have a clue about wildlife. Bears don't stand and pose for the cameras; they can run faster than a UTV on a very rocky moutianside. Even on flat land the bear may win the race.
In addition, a rabid animal's behavior is very unpredictable alternating from passive to aggressive in a split second. The big question to all of you who feel the workers had other non lethal methods for protect themselves think about the number of people who are attacked and killed each years. I bet they wished they had a gun.
As for the need for rabies testing once you start displaying symtons of rabies there is no cure. Now would you want to live the next few months wondering if you were going to died or accidently exposed your family member.
Those guys were lucky and thank goodness they were knew what to do. I don't think the average person could have avoided being hurt or killed.
