Interestingly there wouldn't be as much of a shortage if LPN's were recognized as professional nurses and allowed to work on the inpatient units. At one point in time UVA had some of the best nurses working inpatient and they were LPN's, but because we don't hold a 2 year degree that makes us less of a nurse. Our jobs were given to lesser trained patient care assistants and we were moved to outpatient clinics. I don't take anything away from the assistants but you can't replace licensed and experienced practical nurses. Some of the best care by myself, friends and family have recieved has come from practical nurses. I think it's a sad thing when a qualified, experienced nurse is pushed out of what they love to do because they have 6 months less training than the 2 year RN.

My sister is a nurse and they are overworked. The shortage is in specialized nursing. UVa school of nursing has turned away people, too many. The PVCC program is to elite to allow people in. So there is still a nursing problem. Also, UVa hospital has other issues with their nurses. They tend to allow anyone they can into specialized nursing and many live destructive lives. Drug and alcohol abuse on the pediatric acute care floor is so bad, the hospital just looks the other way. Looks like to me the nursing shortage left alot of problems in its wake.
