Ask congress why they took a vacation last week (and now crying for the president to lead). They don't seem to care about the situation, probably because their salaries aren't affected by sequestration.

Using the stolen money of taxes for huge waste such as art and music is the biggest reason I can think of for sequestration! No one needs it. No one wants it. It is a luxury I do not want to pay for.
Let's pay congress to go on vacation instead!

And let's ask Obama why he went on a golf vacation with Tiger. And while we are at it, where was he when the massacre was happening in Benghazi?

Support home schooling, otherwise bite me. Most of these kids will never be exposed to any of these facets of life were it not for public schools. There not perfect, especially down here, but its better than being exposed to nothing but beer cans. You sure didn't get anything out of it, must of grown up in Greene.

why would they pay 5k for the "rights" to a play when this place is full of straving artists....? why not ask for submissions from the community or the world for that matter that can be had for one dollar?

That 5k saved would buy a llot of supplies..

The comments on this story are absurd, to say the least. The point of this story is that parents are coming together to help our school raise the money it needs for these important programs. Music and the arts are very important for overall development of our youth... Teaching the arts is a key way to develop well-rounded kids who grow up to be well-rounded adults who make a difference in this world.

We don't need to raise more ignorant, narrow-minded people like the morons posting here. ENOUGH ALREADY with the insipid arguments about Obama, gun control, etc. They don't belong here!

I applaud the parents, students and teachers from WAHS and wish them much luck this weekend!

That is an outstanding suggestion--do you have a play to recommend? Or a starving playwright friend?

One point of the story--clearly missed by so many of the folks posting here--is that these kids and their teachers are looking for community involvement. That includes you--do something!

Music has been one of my guiding compasses throughout life and continues to provide great joy. Watching the UVA jazz ensemble last weekend was absolutely awesome, with about 30 performers coming together with a common goal/vision. It is important that these opportunities are given to children for so many reasons--many studies on music have been done through the years and most conclude nothing but positive results. Brain development, social interaction...there are many benefits. I am grateful for music and art, they will always inspire and touch the soul!!

Paraphrasing HL Mencken (or de Tocqueville, or Jefferson, or Lincoln), we get the community we deserve. We get the community we are willing to work for, to support with our time and with our treasure.

Our public schools are a cornerstone in building this community, and we are blessed indeed in Albemarle County to have so many fine schools and a wealth of talented faculty. These teachers are not building scientists, mathematicians, athletes, writers or actors. They are building citizens who are skilled in science and math, in athletics and in the arts.

Bemoaning shrinking budgets is so much sound and fury. These kids, their teachers, and their parents, are working to create community events that showcase their budding talents. And, these events can bring us all together. In a time of so much empty talk--or worse, so much vitriol--these folks are working for solutions. That was, I think, the point of the story.
