I love the incomplete reporting on this article.

The school budget right now is $34,318,540. The schools are short less than 1% of their budget.
They were initially cut $1.1 million, but the BOS has given them back more than $700K back over the last 6 months.

Instead of making corrective cuts in May when they received their budget, the School Board kicked the can and have asked the BOS 4 times for more money. Now 6 months later, they still haven't made any cuts to their budget -- and instead have relied on furloughing teachers because its the easiest.

The only reason why the community is "rallied" is because the school group FFF heard that the BOS began the process to refinance school bonds and save the county money, so they are rallying to get the BOS to give them another allotment == and then "pay back the money later when the refinance happens (if it happens)"

They fail to admit many of the signatures are from out of county residents, some as far away as Texas. Also Mr. Sullivan the crowned dictator of FFF sided with the SB, and Ms. Keller in choosing the furlough days.. Now they turn back to the BOS to demand more of our money.... Dear Mr. Sullivan , the peoples pockets are empty.

With all the constant whining and moaning, you have to wonder how all these "teachers" actually find time to actually do their jobs and teach!

Judging by Fluvanna test scores, I would say they don't!

FFF is running around pointing out that the BOS has over a million dollars in reserves...but simultaneously omitting the fact that the county tax revenue collection is more than $1.1 million dollars in the hole right now due to tax delinquency.

They are also running around gleefully announcing that the county is getting $1.2 million in a refinance. The darn refinance hasn't even happened. They just signed the papers last week to authorize it. Then the bonds have to float the market -- and guess what? Municipal bonds aren't exactly a "hot commodity" right now. They could float the bonds and they may not get a "taker". Then what.

How about the schools and school group wait until the bonds are actually DONE before they advocate spending down any more of our reserves and hoping to "pay it back later".

Do you hear any other county non-profits and agencies clamoring the way the schools have these last 6 months? Over a 1% budget cut?

All those outside robosignatures are coming from the teacher unions, stirring up trouble and trying to drive our taxes sky high! Fluvanna spends over $5 million extra on unneeded teachers!

Guess what? The entire ECONOMY is hurting. It's not just teachers and school staff. I feel for them, but there are the same problems in the private sector too. The difference is, we can't continue to badger our bosses for additional funding....

It's only going to get worse in 2013. I don't know of a school locality anywhere that ISN'T facing budget cuts. They need to get used to less.

Albemarle has 2.4 million in the bank and can't figure out how to throw it away. Fluvanna should aske them for a few bucks.

Please explain how the furloughing works - I assume all teachers are furloughed on the same days thus shutting down the schools each day they are furloughed thus losing a pupil teaching day (which are mandated by the state). How are those lost pupil days going to be made up? Or are the furlough days staggered as to who is furloughed on which days. No one has explained how all of this will occur.

THE POINT IS this really ...

do you want to pay billions for one aircraft carrier, or do you want thousands of teachers?

TEA Party wants to give you an aircraft carrier calling that 'economic development! but ****! That's OUR taxpayers money! My vote is to develop the economy with excellent education, not a single aircraft carrier.

What about you?

If you waste money on these teachers instead of aircraft carriers, you are assured of getting an education! You will be learning Chinese in a "re-education camp" after we are conquered!

There is no more certain way to waste our taxes that in the overpriced "Fluvanna socialist indoctrination center" or as some call it, the unwanted taj mahal high school.

DEAR INSULTING LIAR:

My post says nothing about Fluvanna. It is a general statement. So, obviously, your complaint is 'bearing false witness'- a crime against the God of Moses on Mt Sinai.

So, go call some other kettles black, or blue, or green, etc. And, repent before God gets you.

hopefully you are not one ounce overweight, or shop ever at WalMart, or someone might call you TEA PARTY WALRUS WALLOWING IN YOUR SELF-INDULGENT/CONSUMERIST FANTASY WHILE CHINA, INDIA, BRAZIL, AND HOSTS OF OTHER SOCIETIES ARE FIT, IN COMPETITIVE FORM, CONSTANTLY RAISING YOUR EDUCATION AND TRAINING (LEARNING LANGUAGES, ADVANCED MATH AND SCIENCE, ETC) TO BE A PERFECT COMPETITOR IN A HIGHLY COMPETITIVE AND VERY DIVERSE 21ST CENTURY.

And, you don't think education is worthwhile?! IDIOT idea, that. All the most competitive countries - GERMANY, INDIA, CHINA, ETC - spend fabulous amount of national, state, local, and personal assets on EDUCATION.

On a furlough day, the teachers get to enjoy a four day long weekend at their beach houses (actually the next one creates a 5 day weekend) in return for one measly day of pay while parents have to scramble to find day care so the teachers can enjoy their day off. At least the school board was consideate enough to volunteer to give up a sizable portion of their pay without any inconvenient soviet style work stoppage. Too bad the teachers won't use the day for something useful like a seminar in how to actually teach something. Too bad none of the teachers are willing to supervise needy kids during their union style work stoppage days.

I live in Fluvanna but when I post, it comes up as Charlottesville. Must be my internet provider, that's all.

However, that's not nearly as egregious as all the out-of-state people (friends of petition gatherers, etc) who are signing the petition to drive up the numbers and look important.
