Here's a plan. Let's build more roads even though funding is not there to support what we already have!

Riddle: What do you do when your boat is sinking and you can't keep up?

Answer: Add more water of course!

Well...make a "joint partnership" and build a road to replace a beautiful drive through southside Virginia (the 460 replacement road). Raise Gas Taxes, Put Tolls on roads, Raise the sales tax on automobiles (both new, used, gas & electric), Raise the price of license plates, let's see....how else can we get kicked in the can?

"They say with more fuel-efficient cars on the road, the gas tax is not a sustainable solution to transportation funding in the long term."

False logic.

That should help reduce gas consumption, don't tax it. Must be taking logic lessons from the cooch.

The Post has a much more detailed story. McD proposes: eliminating the gas tax except for diesel; raising the general sales tax .8 %; raising the vehicle registration fee by $15; and imposing an annual $100 fee on vehicles using alternative fuels. So, cutting some taxes, raising others, and creating a new tax, all in one soup. Want a taste?

We now pay 17.5 cents per gallon in sales tax on gasoline/diesel fuels....If this money were directed towards what it was intended for then there would be no need for this discussion....When you take money and put it in the general fund then it goes wherever....the gasoline tax in virginia now raises annually over $500 million exactly what the gov is asking for...keep the fuel tax in a separate account/fund and use it for highway construction, maintenance and repairs...etc. etc...

So instead of encouraging alternative fuels and conservation, the guy who walks three blocks to work will pay as much for the mess that is NoVa as the guy who drives his gas guzzler 50 miles every day.

Brilliant.

Thailand has a bullet train, Thailand, and we aren't held hostage to big oil? Politicians are gas bags.

He keeps stealing lottery money from the education fund to put in the general fund and claiming that exact amount as surplus, what makes you think this criminal is any different than a Louisiana republican or an Illinios democrat?

This is a plan for transportation funding? Surely the governor is merely enjoying a very early April Fools joke. However, it does hold out the promise of some bipartisanship as all Democrats and Republicans in the legislature with half a brain distance themselves from this retrograde, inadequate proposal. Still, it's sad to see Virginia being led by people whose ideas for 21st century funding seem largely out of the horse and buggy era. But, hey, who does political nostalgia better than the Commonwealth?
