I know it's too late for these poor people, but for anyone else--NEVER, I repeat, never give business to someone who comes knocking on your door or calling on your phone (unless it's a neighborhood kid wanting to wash your car or mow your lawn). If they're legit, they'll leave you with information on themselves so you can take the time to check them out and contact them if you're interested. If they refuse to do that, there's a 99.9% chance they're scammers.

A couple of guys pulled in to our driveway while we were doing yard work and offered to seal our driveway. Fortunately we've seen enough TV shows about this scam to know to not even think twice. I feel for these people. Unfortunately it's probably unlikely that they'll catch the guys or recover the money.

Driveways, tree work, roofing, all are perfect for scams. NEVER hire anyone for anything until you check to make sure they are legitimate.

Never, ever pay a contractor up front. It is typical business practice for a contractor to receive payment after work is completed, even if it is in stages. Also, always ask for their license number. You can look up contractors very quickly at http://www.dpor.virginia.gov/licenselookup/

Excellent advice. No legitimate contractor should have a problem with this. You pay on earned value. Specialty contractors should have specialty codes on their licenses. The website will also tell you if there have been disciplinary actions against a contractor.

Phone scams, too. Worst are the outfits that claim to be raising money for cancer of Veterans. Recent one I researched found out that only 6% of your donation actually goes to the Veterans. And the calls all come from the same place. NEVER give your credit card information over the phone, either -- that's the first thing they ask for, "Would you like to make a donation today with your credit card to help out these wonderful folks?" Nope -- you send me information in the mail & I'll make a donation after I've done my research, thanks. Best bet for donations is The Salvation Army. Must be a special place in H3ll for people that scam on Veterans and cancer patients!!

Not sure if it was the same guys, but two were in the Keswick Area on Tuesday. Two white males in a white pickup, wearing neon green tshirts. Unfortunately my daughter was the one approached and was startled by their prescense and did not get the license plate.

Has anyone noticed that this is the same type of business as McAuliffe's early enterprise? One wonders if his "customers" have similar stories.

This happened to my husband and me two-three years ago. Two or three fellows said they had extra asphalt "on the truck" and would pave our driveway. It needed and stills need paving, but it will cost so much, it has to wait. Just four or five days ago, a young man, small build knocked on the door. I am slow, can't walk well, and he kept knocking like he expected deafness. He said he would pavement for $600 cash. He noticed a break, etc. I told I had been scammed by that and wouldn't get caught again. Driveway would have to wait until I had the money. I know it's the same kind of scam as before, and my house is long. I couldn't see the vehicle and had to go back and sit down.
