Oh, no, no, no!! I think it's a terrible idea! I understand needing $$ in the reserve, but not by way of installing meters along the gorgeous coastline!

Hey, this meter scheme sounds like a great idea to keep the poor and ugly off the the coast. Those people belong in Salinas.
Apparently a couple of trolls were recently cited for camping in their vehicle squatting on the coast free of charge. This real estate is too valuable for the unkept. Such people should be charged de facto rent with the use of parking meters.
Perhaps Pacific Grove ought to "privatize" the coast by installing toll gates on Ocean Drive between Monterey and Pebble Beach to discourage drivers too cheap to pay for parking. Afterall, coastal access and enjoyment should be reserved for the rich and beautiful.
John Steinbeck would be so proud of you free-loving folks.

Pacific Grove and Seaside are both neglecting economic development in their quest to make ends meet. Instead PG thinks it needs more parking meters and Seaside thinks it needs one of the highest sales tax rates in the state. Both cities should be doing more to attract the type of retail that will draw customers from all over the peninsula, not just from within their own borders. PG has a department store building that could, if it had a major anchor tenant like JC Penney or perhaps something more upscale, would bring shoppers in droves, encouraging more businesses to open nearby. Likewise, Seaside should have a major anchor tenant on Broadway and Fremont, but all we got was another Starbucks and Kinkos. City leaders need to set their sights higher. Their nickel and dime taxing tactics are just driving business away.

I notice that the previous 3 Comments were all written from somewhere else besides PG. It seems to me that since the good folks of the "pebble beach company" levy a fee for "polluting vehicles" to enjoy their coastline; the good people of Pacific Grove have the same right; despite the fact the Pebble is owned by so-called "Profit-Making Corporation". After all, Pacific Grove is also incorporated; but not as a profit making venture. It is incorporated as, what I guess, the legal eagles, would call a "Civic Entity".
Installing "ugly" parking meters along the "Shoreline" cannot work unless the meter ticketers ride bicycles as there is not enough room on the road for their electric vehicles to cruise for overtimers without slowing coastal traffic to a crawl. The mere slowness of this "tiny gems" of civic income would slow tourist traffic along our coastline almost to a halt. More some other time ... Dinner beckons ...

The Herald format for "Comments" to Articles published leaves little time for busy people to proofread their work products as regards their reaction to the "News" The Herald chooses to send into print. Consequently, for the disgusting grammatical errors in Comment #4 above, I brook no apology as I was starving and freezing high up here; near 1,000 feet within the City Limits of the City of Pacific Grove, County of Monterey, State of California ... And not as Comment #4 denotes; that I wrote this blogging piece of junk email from Salinas, our County Seat. Frankly, I wouldn't be caught dead in Salinas; except to go shopping and eat out. For County business; forget about it; there's no parking ... And when there is ... The eyes of twenty plainclothes security officers are on you; watching you exit your car safely... Despite, California law; everyone knows that if a driver exits a motor vehicle parked on the right side of a two way street ... And if before he or she sets foot on the pavement; another motor vehicle smashes into to him or her; he or she is at fault; for he or she is still a "driver" and was not looking back to see if another driver was approaching his or her "wheels" too quickly; so that the collision could have been completely avoided ...'Nuff said; enough time wasted ... Good night gentle readers. jr.

Jerry,
Our system automatically displays the location of your Internet Service Provider, which may or may not exactly match your physical location. However, if you've registered for a free user profile, you can customize the more prominently displayed “Hometown” field to whatever you like.
