Bicyclist runs down 2-year-old girl in downtown Oroville

Tuesday afternoon, a bicyclist ran over a 2-year-old girl on a sidewalk in downtown Oroville, leaving a tire track on the back of her dress, and the police chief has had enough.

wish they could confiscate the car that nearly plowed me over when it blew through the stop sign at Huntoon and Montgomery.
The bikes and boards should not be on the sidewalk, but hey chief, how about making sure they feel safer on the road by enforcing their right to be there. You can not look the other way when motorist run bikes or boards off the road, then complain when they take to the sidewalks.
And leave it to the OMR to jump all over a story where the cyclist may be a criminal, while never a peep about the person charged with 19 counts of starving her horses, or writing hot checks.

There is no excuse for hitting a two year old girl and then riding off like a coward! This is not the same Oroville that I grew up in during the 60's & 70's!

That man or boy who ran over that 2 year old little girl should be arrested. Not stopping to make sure she was ok is absolutely unacceptable. I am a grandmother myself and my grandaughter does shows at the state theater. I could not imagine someone running her over on a bike or any other way. I think the person responsible should turn himself in.
And apologize to her and her grandmother. Maybe the bike riders should have to carry insurance just like other drivers. I am glad the police chief is going after these people.

See, that is why I get upset. It is not "these people".
Bicyclist and skateboarders are the same as you Elizabeth.
Yes the "individual" that ran over the girl appears to be a low-life for his actions and failures, but to blame bicyclist and skateboarders in general is no less than prejudice, and prejudice is ugly no matter who the target.
Robert, back in the 60's we had Officer Bergman walking downtown, would be great to have a like minded officer working for Oroville now.

If they went after the bikes as aggressive as they do the skateboards, this wouldn't have happened. Maybe this is what it takes to finally get the BMX-boys off the sidewalks down town.

I am glad that people, especially teens and young adults have the option of a healthy activity such as riding a bike or skateboarding. However, since you don't have to be licensed to ride a boke or skateboard, common sense and courtesy seem to fly out the window. I am sad that law enforcement has been forced to take a stand about this, and especially sad that a poor litle girl was injured. Riders need to be responsible, and hopefully this will be the issue that forces that responsibility.

Unfortunately, this is more than a lack of common sense and courtesy. This person knew it was wrong to be on the sidewalk - he didn't care. He knew it was wrong to be riding the way he was - he didn't care. And he certainly knew it was wrong to run down a little girl and just ride away - he didn't care. People like this are only concerned for themselves and that's unfortunate for the rest of us but...he doesn't care.

I know this little girl. She's a tiny, beautiful little girl with bright blue eyes and a face that lights up at the drop of the hat. She is a person to me and I want the man (?) who hit her to know that she's a person too. Concern for her well being should have overridden his fear of the consequences....which are only worse since he didn't stop. She suffered bumps, scrapes and bruises...but she was also traumatized by the incident. She woke up crying all night and wouldn't sleep alone. I do agree that the streets need to be made safer for cyclists and skateboarders and this should be on the cops agenda just as much as guarding the sidewalks. However, if you're gonna ride on the sidewalk in the meantime, practice caution and courtesy and if you plow anyone over, let alone and innocent baby, have the decency to stop!!!

I see lots of the disrespect.
A brand-new block retaining wall put up to prevent erosion.

Bikers and boarders destroy it within 48 hours.

The wall is repaired, and again destroyed. No respect for persons or property, yet they want to be "recognized" as performing a legal "sport".

For you poor, persecuted skaters out there...here's a clue...if you don't own it, don't tear it up.

If you run over my 2 year old granddaughter, you will wish you had never been born. I don't disrespect the law, but can make exceptions when needed.

Lyle, Your are right maybe they should find another officer like Bergman, he was one in a million. You are also right about bicyclist and skate boarders, most of them are regular people. However, any person who would do this to a child and ride off is nothing more than a low life. I winder what Officer Bergman would have to say about this individual? Even the most violent, dangerous convicts in our prisons have a strict rule of ethics when it comes to children. Maybe a little jail time would help this low life change his ways?

Hey, while you're at it, get some of those beggars off the corners also. I'm tired of your town allowing those deadbeats with their cardboard signs. Clean up your town. No wonder Chico wants the county seat, it's perilous to go to Oroville.

That's funny Jim...I just saw some of those cardboard sign holders here in Chico. I'm sure you've seen them by Toys R Us. Every town has its beggars, it's druggies, etc. But this page is about a 2 year old girl who was victimized...not about bashing our neighboring towns.

While exiting a cycle shop (yes, my whole family cycles together, responsibly), I was almost nailed by one of the little BMX-boys as he hopped on his bike and proceeded to aggressively pedal down the sidewalk. Every time I go to the corner of Montgomery and Huntoon there are crowds of the BMXers doing wheelies in the cross walks, flatland tricks on the sidewalks, or tricks on the curbs and benches. If they were riding skateboards, someone would call 911 and snatch their boards. Do the same for the irresponsible riders! Skateboards got banned from downtown when Jana Wilson got hit in the 80's, how about banning recreational bike riding with the same rules. It won't affect the commuters and shoppers riding bikes because they ride following the rules of the road, not on the sidewalks.

Lyle, I was not trying to be predjudice or saying that all skateboarders and bikers are like that. I was commenting on the guy who ran over the little girl. However, I think skateboarders and bike riders should follow the rules of the road just like anyone else. I know some skateboarders and bike riders who make sure they are courteous even if they are riding on the sidewalk. I'm just saying the guy who did that needs to be caught, thats all.

And for Jim, ALL cities have beggars not just Oroville. And I love living in Oroville. By the way 3 stabbings, one drivby, and 65 arrested in your town on the weekend, I dont hear that happening in Oroville and the beggars sure arent doing it. Maybe you need to concentrate on cleaning up your town instead of worrying about ours. And By the way, no offense intended just good ol honesty. I moved up here from the bay area to get away from that kind of behavior.

I will gladly get in line to castrate the idiot who hit the little girl then ran off, oh wait, he obviously has no balls to begin with.If he wants to grow a set he should turn himself in immediately.
However, my comments (Lyle)are more about how this story has been presented. This could have been written as "Accident turns to Crime as suspect leaves scene". But instead it is written as BICYCLIST, over and over again. This story is not about the little girl, this story is an attack on bicyclist.
Some people in this town are prejudiced against anyone riding a bicycle, and miss no opportunity to lash out against anyone who rides.
