Time to legalize marijuana. The prohibition of weed creates a black market in which many poor people are all too willing to fill the need.
If we legalized/decriminalized weed this type of black market activity would be reduced dramactically. Firstly, gangs would have less income to buy weapons. Secondly, there would be less need for weapons because they would not have to defend their territory.
Imagine if you could grow weed in your back yard, the black market would dry up over night, along with all the crime and violence associated with it.
Who are we kidding? This raid will have no impact on drug addiction, gun smuggling, violence, or gang activity. The "war on drugs" is a complete failure because it fails to recognize that markets are more powerful than government fiat. Write all the laws you want...there is a large demand for it. Just ask your college aged kids.
Hey stupid- even if you legalize "the bud" gangs still deal meth, coke, crack, etc. You gonna legalize that too in an effort to decrease their profit margin? Go rip another bong hit hippie.....

And this is the reason I love living in Sandsdowne NH. Biggest issue I have around here now is if I have gas in the boat or how big the fire will be tonight. No neighbors for miles, no gunshots (unless people are legit hunting for animals NOT PEOPLE) If you don't like the thugs then move like I did

It took the LPD this long to catch gang members and drug dealers, what the LPD fail to mentions what about Officer Annis. What the difference between Officer Annis and the gang member, the only difference Annis get to terrorize the city with his badge and cover up under the seal of the LPD. Where was officer Annis photo on the Lowell Sun. The Lowell Sun continue to go onto MySpace or go to court to get a photo of the minority community, where was Officer Annis photo, case of double standard what happen to fair and balance or the TRUTH. Double take I do believe. Lowellian once again seem to use his racist and bias tone toward the minority community, instead of blogging all-day, how about you try to make a difference in the city, you comment lack substance and guided toward your racist ideology. Let not get the Lowell Sun to confuse us, what the Lowell Sun fail to mention is the peoples being charge is not convicted let them have they day in court, instead of contaminating he jury pool. The people being charge is someone brother, sister, dad, mother and friends.

On 07/17/2008 The Lowell Sun reports Lowell police, DA's office getting $222G to combat gang violence and then three days later they do a huge round up of so called gang bangers. Then the two biggest charges they have are Federal charges for posession of ammunition. I'm not defending any of these people rounded up, but lets be truthful, looks like LPD did this round up to give justification to this grant. When the Federal Government gives money, guess you actually have to look like your working. Like any of this money or ant of these round ups are going to make a difference.
Maybe it's a start of what they can do with the money, personally I hope it continues on and on. Anyone associated with any "Gang" should be punished as criminals, they are no different than terrorists. How can you justify illegal selling of ammunition? And what about the weapons seized, the drugs? Sorry but these things they are doing are not meant to do anything legal in any manner. AND THEY DID BREAK THE LAW!!!

<quoted text> This country has failed them?? You are wrong. I do not know any of the ten that got arrested but this one person you are talking about Maybe Shane is his name. Was he the one they got for selling bullets?? If that is true how can that be if he is such a decent person?
I stand by what I said; this country failed them. How am I wrong? Do you really believe that everyone gets and equal chance at success? You can ask teachers in Lowell whether or not all of the students in the class get the attention they need. Also, I will add something that regretfully omitted in my initial post; parents without a doubt are largely responsible for the development for their children. I will concede that people have the right to choose their own path in life but, not everyone is given the same map.

For Shane, that is his name by the way, I said he wasn’t perfect, but he is still my friend. You might also want to keep in mind that “decency” is a relative term.

What of the decency of this country. We sold ammunition and mines to "freedom fighters" to fight the Soviet Union. Those same people we now call “insurgents” and they’re using US 155mm HE Howitzer Shells to dismember, maim and murder our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Furthermore, all those charged are still innocent until proven guilty. Who are you to pass judgment on a matter you know nothing more of than a headline in some local newspaper?

i dont know about all these other guys, but Shane, ive known my whole life, he has changed his whole life around completely he doesn't drink or anything like that anymore, ive actually been out with him and been in fights and he would stand there and never get involved, thats how much he loved his freedom, and now that he has a baby on the way, who knows, maybe he wanted to save a little extra money to give the kid the life he never had. Lets be serious 15 years to life for WHAT?? selling some bullets , are you people retarded??
No we are not "retarded". We have common sense. How is it that he "changed his life around"? What step in changing your life around is selling bullets on?
If he was changing his life around he wouldn't have been selling bullets he should have had a legit job. Too bad if the jobs wouldn't have paid as well as selling bullets. When you are about to become a parent it's time to swallow your pride and find a way LEGALLY to support your children. I understand he has a criminal record and it's hard for people with records to get a job but he could have found one. There are programs with the probation office that help people convicted of crimes find a job. All it takes is some effort.

With that said, GOOD LUCK in Iraq and stay safe.

All I know is there are 10 problems off the street and more to go I know. I also know that this issue was under investigation for quite sometime before anyone was arrested it really does not matter what the paper said. Good police work LPD keep it going.

I also am aware that many of the youth today do end up making bad choices and then eventually some do turn things around and that is great however they either turn it around or not and if he is out there selling bullets then I think it is fair to say he has not turned anything around.

Let's review:

I backed all my opinions with supporting statements.

You called me wrong without explaining why?

I challenged you to discuss why I was wrong.

You listed a few things you knew without responding to what I said.

I stuck it to you that you know very little.

You eventually partially agreed with me in a long run-on sentence.

Then you got fresh and made an off topic remark.

Still you haven't backed up why you think I'm wrong.

Did I get it all?

Do you plan on making any valid points or do you want to change subjects and chat with the other knuckleheads in this thread about restaurants?

The only point is there are ten thugs off the streets. That is a great thing I do not care that you think you support your statements you also obviously support crime. You placing blame on an entire country ,schools, is wrong put it where it belongs right on the criminals themselves.

Joe,

I have a question for you. Why is it that whenever someone who is arrested and a friend or family member comes to their defense on the news, in the paper, or on this messageboard I always seem to hear "he/she is a good kid and they were turning their life around..." now I'm not saying Shane was or wasn't but you seem like an intellegent guy answer me this why do I seem to hear/read that at least twice a week? If all of these people are turning their lives around why do so many seem to get arrested?
