My home was built in 1997, shingled with Certainteed 25 year shingles. The shingles started to curl at 8 years and did send in the 2 shingles required by Certainteed. They responded by telling me they would reimburse $750. I could not afford to reshingle at that time so waited and now on the 11th year the shingles will need replacing. The materials needed for my roof are $5000., and labor was quoted to me at $5000 also. Come on Certainteed, get real.

Gina. I live in Janesville.I can relate to your problem. I put mine on in 2002 and they are shot. I aready had filed a claim and they offered an amount the first time. What a "joke"! Then I did talk to a Certainteed rep and he offered me a little more per square with a rebate. You still have to pay out of pocket first and then send the rebate in. I emailed back, but have not heard from them. What they offered does not even cover the price of their shingle. Shingles are almost one hundred dollars per square. They say they are not responsible for labor, but as a consumer you should get somethimg back. I am in the process of looking to file a small claims against them with maybe the help of an attorney. I will check this site more offten for replies.

Our shingles went on in 2005 and the granular is all off - actually plugging our gutters. The shingles are warped, cracked and bare. We haven't contacted certainteed yet. Our shingles are from the Horizen line.

Here is the website for one of the law firms bringing a class action lawsuit in this matter:

Soap has been used for centuries as an all-purpose pesticide.
It disrupts insects’ cell membranes, and kills pests by
dehydration. The key is not to use too much soap, or you’ll
also kill the vegetation near the pests. If you follow the
proportions of soap to water in the Soap Spray recipe, below,
the vegetation should be fine.

Note: Buy a liquid soap and not a detergent. Health food
stores have liquid soaps, such as Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile

Insecticidal Soap Spray
1 to 2 tablespoons liquid soap
1 quart water

Combine ingredients in a bucket, mix, then transfer to a spray
bottle as needed.

All-Purpose Pesticide Soap Spray
Strong smelling roots and spices such as garlic, onions,
horseradish, ginger, rhubarb leaves, cayenne and other hot
peppers, are all known to repel insects.

A handful of roots and spices
Enough boiling water to cover
Soap Spray (recipe, above)

Add the roots and spices to the bottom of a mason jar. Cover
with the boiling water, screw on the top, and let set overnight.
Strain, and add to the Soap Spray. Note that this will rot,
so use it all up or freeze leftovers for another time.

Sorry--some completely extraneous material got into my post. Ignore the recipe for killing Japanese beetles, and look for the web address at the end.

I have discovered like everyone else here that I have CertainTeed's defective shingles. My were installed in Oct. 2001 and I need an entire new roof and have water damage inside the walls of my house. I have read articles that you may get a prorated amout of money but just for the shingles. Is there any way to get them to cover the cost of the damages they have caused?

We built our home in 2002 and put certainteed shingles on it. From what I understand they were the organic ones. They are falling apart. The granules are falling off and the edges are curling. They have to be replaced before winter so that further damage does not occur to the structure. We do not have the money to replace the shingles. This could break the bank for us in this economy. So frustrating, working hard to not even make ends meet and now this. I guess we're going to have to join the lawsuit and hope for the best.
thanks for info i am in process of replacing a 22 yr. old roof and was planning on using certaineed, no way now.thanks again

I too have the same problem with my figerglass Hearthstead shingles. They were put on in 2000, and I live in. How do you get on the lawsuit, I live in South Dakota, and does it work to take them to small claims?

Our home is a Wausau home finished May 31, 2003. Our Certainteed Horizon Shangles are cracking, curling, deteriating after only 6 years. Does anyone else have a Wausau home having this problem? We did not choose these shingles as this is what Wausau Homes put on their homes in 2003. The only choice we had was the color. When we called the Wausau builder and Wausau Homes office, they both said we are on our own and have to deal with CertainTeed ourselves. These shangles have a 25 year warranty. We chose a Wausau Home because of the good quality and the fact that they (we thought) stood behind their homes. We feel that we have been betrayed as these shingles were their choice, not ours. We feel that Wausau Homes is not taking responsibility for their choices. We heard that there is a class action lawsuit, but cannot seem to get any information about it. Does anyone have any information, suggestions, etc. as to what we can do?

There is a class action suit against Certainteed and they are very close to settling this and you can contact Halunen Associates: Website: and their Tele # is 866-523-8533. You need the original warranty to get best settlement and just announced that they are close to finalizing an agreement if Judge ok's it. If you have valid warranty they will pay $74 per square($34 per sq for materials & $40 per sq for labor), which covers about 50% of replacement cost. If you do not have valid warranty they will only pay $34 per sq which will then be pro-rated from date of installation. So without a warranty you get hardly anything and even w/warranty the best you can expect is 50%. They are hoping to have this settled in Sept 2009. Best of luck to you. Has anyone had any success in small claims court against Certainteed?

Unfortunately roofing shingles have been failing prematurely since the early 1980's. The current class-action lawsuit will not help those with fiberglass shingles and only pay a fraction of the cost of replacing the defective organic.
CertainTeed has filed a lawsuit against me because I have been telling people about the scam read the asphalt page.
I would be interested in hearing from anyone with defective fiberglass shingles.

I also have had problems with my shingles breaking in half, it is almost like they never stuck down since the day we installed them. (Which was in 2003) Our insurance company also would not pay anything since they were so new. We have a one and one half story, and had to replace the upper level in 2007 and now the lower level is the same way. I would definitely say the company used faulty glue. They should not be breaking off the way they are this early in the game.

We are interested in David Rome's small claims court suit in Adams County. We also are in Adams County and have a seven year old Wausau home built by Woodcraft Builders out of Necedah. Our Certainteed New Horizon Shangles are cracking already. The large class action lawsuit filed or being filed from an attorney in Minnesota is for the Horizon Organic shingles only, not the fiberglass ones that we have. We did not know how to proceed as we were hoping to find a class action suit for the type of shingles we have. David - what kind of shingles do you have?

I had my roof replaced with CertainTeed shingles in 1999. Starting about two years ago these shingles got so curled and worn that I had to replace all the shingles. Last week I had this job done and it cost me over $5600.00. I would like to join the many in this lawsuit.
