Paul from Wisconsin wrote: Is your island really that wild that you have packs of roaming dogs? Or, do you have irresponsible dog owners who let their dangerous animals loose? Or, do you have license and leash laws that are not enforced? Paul ... there are primitive people here who let their dogs run loose because they expect someone else to take care of them then they call themselves responsible. Leash and license laws are not enforced unless the law enforcement officals actually see them with their own eyes. Unless some poor human is attacked, then the wheels start rolling. So in the meantime ...

Dogs are acting on their natural instincts. DLNR needs to quickly determine that these birds were killed by dogs and trap them dogs. They sound like strays. This shouldn't take another year to figure out what to do. DLNR-Don't procrastinate! Golf course owner, how come your'e not watching your property? Wild dogs roaming your course? Well, Pali has lots of chickens on theirs. Landowners, take care of your property or don't buy them up, leave em for us!

One more really loooong fence going up at the beach. Watch. But, the birds are very important to local people because they are needed to find fish out at sea, not simply something nice to look at.

mookane wrote: DLNR should Shoot or poison those dogs, they are strays and shouldn't be roaming free. For all you dog lovers, if you're whining about it, go catch all of them and chain em up in your yard as your pets! Yea, I thought so... DLNR, Shoot them or poison them ! You're absolutely right!!! I have another idea: instead of shooting or poisoning them which only draws outcries from dog owners, DLNR should put a bounty on any unleashed dog at the golf course. Bounty hunters can stake the golf course at night, set up bird decoys and shoot the attacking dogs with tranquilizer darts then turn the dogs over to the Hawaiian Humane Society. If the dog owner does not bail out his or her pet within a week, the dog is euphanized, and the bounty hunter is reimbursed the $500 bounty by the golf course. No more marauding dogs!!!

Kill these dogs. Next time, these dogs will attack a golfer or maybe even a child.
Dogs are non-native. The Hawaiians brought them to Hawaii, just like how the Westerners brought cattle. The Hawaiians ate dogs - they were prized food - reserved for royalty. Many different ethnic groups eat dogs - Chinese, Filipinos, Koreans, etc. We should start eating them too. What's the difference between eating a dog, a pig, cow, goat, chicken, or frog??
The Shearwaters are NATIVE. They were probably here in Hawaii even before the Native Hawaiians. We have an obligation to protect these birds.

I completely agree that the Superferry needs to float on the water rather than fly like a bird.

Plenty people from all over responding. Sad the birds died from some running wild dogs. This story sure makes the news, but when there are drug dealers selling ice all over the island and they are respondsible for 80% of all the crimes on the island, not too many people care about them. "The birds, the poor birds" What about the poor people suffering from these ICE DEALERS?

Treat the dogs with foregiveness.........for they thow chow no not know what they don't know. To know is to know. To not know is to not know as Confusious would have said in his infinite words of wisdom.........therefore, the moral of my passage, is that no not know and do not know that not know.

Aloha Aina wrote: <quoted text> That's a legitimate question, Paul. Kahuku is a very small residential community, but a very large agricultural subdivision is just south of the town. It contains over a dozen truck farms. Those farms are plagued with theft and the farmers are forced to do whatever they can to protect their crops. A lot of them use dogs to guard their corps. Interestingly, when you tour this area, you see that a lot of the dogs are mixed breed char-pei. Char-pei (the chinese dog with all the wrinkles) are pretty aggressive. As most of the farmers don't live on the farms, care for the dogs is minimal. It is quite common for some to get loose, creating a feral dog population in the area. These feral dogs are responsible for the killings at the nearby golf course. Mahalo for this background info! These details are very interesting and important to know. It is too bad that the reporter did not run a parallel article about the farmers and how this complex issue is a problem for all of Kahuku. I know there have been stories about the problems the farmers have been having with theft. They are really struggling to live off the land up there. And -- wasn't there even a shooting up there over theft?! This is not a simple story of dead birds (protected birds at that!)- nor of irresponsible dog owners. The newspaper should have done a better job on this one. The photo is dramatic and sad. The public deserves more than titilation.

Yeah, right. Killed by a pack of wild dogs? Are these birds flightless? Were they caught off guard, sleeping, by a wild pack of at least 50 dogs? And these wild dogs are killing for fun and not for food? And what? About 40 birds were found in the same condition in the same location about a year ago? There are some serious questions that need to be answered. Sounds more like a cover up to me. Puncture wounds can be applied after the fact.

It constantly interests me to watch these blogs and see how many people are willing to comment on stories without really knowing any of the facts. They assume the information in the story is accurate and complete, and often, it is not. With the advent of the internet and blogging, journalists are under increasing pressure to produce. They get their information from the internet rather than the good old fashion way...research and interview. And because of the internet, and the demand for "instant" information that it has created, they have less and less time to devote to a story. So what we get is a fast-write designed to attract our attention...nothing more. Blogging has become a very useful tool for getting to the truth, but as you can see, 95% of it is taken up by people who, A. think they are funny or cute, B. just want to be heard, C. are angry and frustrated and have no other means available to vent, or D. want to see themselves in print.

Shearwaters are ground nesting. If frightened, they don't take off, they hunker down and hide. This behaviorial trait makes them easy prey for dogs.
