Appreciate jet noise

Reference the editorial "Sound of freedom," Jan. 28. Amen, amen. I lived in Florida 20 years before coming home again, but when I heard the jets go over my apartment, I knew I was home.

I am so tired of "the price of freedom." Last time I checked no one was coming to take our freedon except for our own government. Give me a break!

How about some freedom from noise pollution? Our government is intent on taking away our freedoms along with those of any other country they choose to invade and occupy.

Number me among those who think the jets are the "sound of freedom". I live under the flight path to/from Langley. The jets don't bother my resting at night. I hope whatever mission they are flying is successful and safe.

Yep, I'm with ya.
I think that they should be forced to figure out a way to put mufflers on them.

Ok...lets see...Langley Air Force Base has been around since 1911. Oceana Naval Air Station - 1933. I doubt if your house was built BEFORE Langley was built. YOU moved into the flight path of an active runway then complain about the noise. I don't hear the people in SUFFOLK complaining about the noise. Why? Because they CHOSE to not move into an active runway area. Duh! Like the people of Kiln Creek complaining becuase of the jet noise. Duh! Patrick Henry Airport was founded in a FARM FIELD in the 1930's. YOU decided to move into the new Kiln Creek subdivision(built 1986)knowing that an airport was less than 1 mile away. Duh!

I actually like the sound of jets. They do not bother me one bit. Yes, its loud, but its gone rather quickly (unlike commercial planes).

I look up and say "thank you."

Don't like it? Move away.

You look up and say "thank you" for what, exactly? Please be specific. Are you a moron?? Do you somehow still believe that America's WMDs are for keeping us safe and free?? Do you live under a rock or just choose ignorance???

Boy, aren't you bitter? There is no reason to call me names just because you don't share the same opinion as me. I say "thank you" because I appreciate what the military does to keep my family safe. I live in a neighborhood full of air force families and I am THANKFUL to them for the sacrifices that they have made, uprooting their families and moving all over the place.

I am NOT a supporter of George Bush or this ridiculous war, but I will ALWAYS support our military and their families.

You don't need to agree with me - but you also don't need to insult me. I do not insult you for your opinions.

Jets fly over my home all the time and it doesn't bother me. In fact, I'm kind of use to it now...Hardly even notice most of the time...Of course, I think sometimes those jet jockeys (No pun indeed...) fly really low and fast over my neighborhood just tp p!ss opff my neighbor. Who is always complaining about the jets flying over and even called Langley a few times to complain. Heck! Might as well just painted a BIG sign on your roof!

I knew when I bought my house that it was the flight path of Langley.

When I hear them flying I feel safe...When it comes a time I don't hear them flying. It'll be time for ALL of us to start worrying.

Let freedom sound...LOUD & CLEAR!!!

Agreed. I can hear the "big voice" intercom at Langley in my house if its quiet. People ask if I wne tto the air show and I say, no the air show comes to me. I love jets, and I love the noise. My brother has worked on AF jets for 18 years or so, makes me love it even more. Although I admit its a little freaky when the "mosquito bomber" flies over!

I also live in the flight path and I also can hear the intercom and get all of the music they play during the day at different intervals. Neither the noise from the intercoms or the jets bother me in the least. Like someone said earlier, Langley was here before my house was built. I am the one who moved in on them, not the other way around. If I didn't want to hear the noise, I wouldn't have bought this house. Anyone who doesn't like it shouldn't have purchased a house where they did and is free to move.

Let's see, you got two clueless, 2 nuts, and 2 diagrees. Does that tell you anything? Probably not, so let me make it clear: You're the moron. Also, they say that ignorance is bliss, you sure must be blissful!!!

Exactly how is a jet aircraft a WMD? Or are you making the assumption that every jet that takes off is carrying a NBC munition?

You need to choose ignorance as you have clearly demonstrated that your miniscule amount of knowledge is more dangerous.

Military aircraft flying where ya can hear them = the sound of freedom.

Do I hear ya right?

JH says "In some places they run when they here a jet cause they know the bombs are coming."

No doubt the jets are making more folks free - from their earthly form.
Except of course those that run and find cover fast. Guess they're not free. Just alive and living in fear of the sound of freedom.

"Last time I checked no one was coming to take our freedon except for our own government."

And the military can't help ya there can they? No matter how many times ya hear them flying over the Homeland.

Used to be called the United States.

What kind of government did the "Motherland" have?

What kind of government did the "Fatherland" have?

What kind of folks made ever more justifications and allowed the "security minded" government to continue?

Not the kind that started what became the United States.

Life - Liberty - and the pursuit of Happiness.

Looks like those three are outdated to most in this country nowadays.

Folks are more keen on Security - Obedience - and the support of Homeland.

Equating jet noise to "the sound of freedom" is rather militaristic. Children laughing and playing in public free of fear and danger is a healthier example. So is hearing an audience laughing at a play or movie that is a comedic satire of their government and/or political leaders.

It is true that a standing military is important to deter or defend our country against would-be attackers. Yet we must avoid the "Military-Industrial Complex" President Eisenhower warned us about in his farewell address. Otherwise, our Free Society transforms into a Warfare State.
For those of our neighbors who have taken Ike's warning to heart the sound of jets takes on a different meaning.

Quite honestly the sound of jet noise means that city officials allowed development to encroach too much on a military base. Decades ago studies were done to assess noise levels and the impact that jet noise would have on residents. Cities were warned about the noise levels, and those warnings were ignored. If you have aproblem with jet noise, don't blame the military. Blame your greedy city officials who are clamoring for property tax dollars.
