I have been a supporter of Kevin Hoovers stance against the illegal grows in our town up until I bought the paper today.

I have never even been a smoker of marijuana, but what I read turned my stomach.

I have loved this community because of it's stances against the federal government on many issues through the many years I've lived here. I believe as a community we can tackle the illegal grow house problem. It may not be as quick as if the feds came in and ripped our town to shreds, but it would be a lot less devastating on the good people of arcata, and I really don't believe the sky will fall in the time frame it takes us to deal with this.

I'm a believer in compassionate use, as I had a relative that gained great relief from medical marijuana, as do most of the voters here, the feds don't.

To invite the feds into our town that has taken very vocal stances on everything from the war in iraq, to the current administration, to medical marijuana, is just opening the floodgates in my opinion.

And the fact that people in our community are willing to completely sidestep local democracy like this seems very un-American, and goes against everything this country was originally created for in my opinion.

My family has been spending at least $100 a week at wildberries, and will not be spending any more until they pull their advertising from the Eye. I will be writing them a letter.

We are also canceling our subscription to the Eye.

Wildberries, if your listening, some of us have been around here for awhile and know how you got your start!

Here are a few snips from the article that has me so upset...

ARCATA – With new local and state guidelines in the works and looming over Arcata’s out-of-control cannabis scene, the federal government is here to help as well.

In the interview, Burns adamantly dismissed any notion of medical usefulness of marijuana, saying that dosages are unregulated, smoking is an irresponsible delivery system and that suitable substitutes for medical cannabis exist in the form of FDA-approved medications. Legalization, Burns said, would immediately lead to even more widespread use. He said today’s marijuana fundamentally alters human brain structure and leads to addiction and ruined lives.

The results of Burns’ foray into cannabinized California will, he said, soon be discussed in the halls of high-level government in Washington, D.C.“I’ll report back to Mr. Walters [John P. Walters, ONDCP director] on what I saw and feedback I received,” Burns said.

I WILL NOT GET INTO ONE OF THOSE STUPID MARIJUANA DEBATES I SEE HERE, JUST GIVING A NOTICE. THIS IS ABOUT OUR SOVERNTY, AND OUR ABILITY TO NOT NEED A FEDERAL BABYSITTER, NOT THE MARIJUANA.

I assume that you and your community will forego all payments. No money at all, that would have to part of the program. I grew up in a town almost as pathetic as Arcata. Have fun, the rest of us will handle the adult stuff.

I don't know what your talking about or how it has anything to do with my topic, but putting people down to feel better about ones self is something you don't see from educated adults. That's high school type behavior.

As long as you feel better about yourself though :).

I've lived here 16 years thank you very much, and raised 2 kids. Long enough to know Phil, and how he started wildberries. I think that's long enough to have a stake in the community. And you?

Like I said, I've never smoked or grown marijuana. I have always liked Phil also. Him and his wife are great people, and none of this is personal to them, I just choose for my hard earned LEGAL money to not be going to the Arcata Eye at this point, which I was a supporter of up until this point.

Thanks for the attack though.

What did they do wrong by reporting what the federal government thinks?

Don't you want to know? You read it, didn't you?

You want to prevent other people from reading the same thing? Or what?

Boycotting a local business b/c of where they place an advertisement in an economic recession, in a community as economically defunct as Humboldt county is the epitome of illogical. Why don't you just shoot the nose off your face and throw that baby out with the bathwater while you are at it?

P.S. I don't really understand how anyone has "sidestepped democracy" here. Care to elaborate? Moreover, I don't understand why this single article has suddenly turned you against the Eye when you admit to being anti-illegal grow. Dramatic much?

It is illogical to believe that you were really Pro-Eye before and because of this one news article that you are now so ANTI-Eye. Something does not add up in your "story".

Here's Concern's train of thought in a nutshell: Concern reads an article in the Eye. Article interviews the feds. The Feds say they don't support medical marijuana. Concern supports medical marijuana. Wildberries advertises in the Eye. Ipso facto, Wildberries must be stopped!!!!

Yes. It's brilliant!

I'm sorry if I don't want to have my money support something I think is very wrong. It's not just this story, it's been a buildup, this story was the final straw.

Kevin used to do good things with the paper for this community. He started encouraging the community to work together to get the bad people out, he didn't even give that much time before he's having meetings with the feds, and encouraging things that could potentially have a whole lot of collateral damage on people we care about, even ourselves. Wait and see.

I really hope it doesn't, but I can't support it.

To those being hateful, we are all on the same team here, why can't we, as a community, sit down and civilly deal with this issue, like fully capable adults. It's OUR community, we want the same thing, why can't we work together to fix this?

This was a rather irrational thought process. Boycott the Eye because they reported the Feds perspective.....go smoke another joint and chill out.

Who says The Eye "invited" them? I'm not clear why all the vitriol for Kevin Hoover and his paper. He's just reporting what happens, not making it happen. Is it possible that reporting marijuana grow houses caught drug-enforcement agencies attention? It certainly was noticed by other news media, state and national. Lots of crimes besides drugs will get the Feds involved; missing children for example. Do you advocate letting your local law enforcement handle that for a few months before the resources of the FBI are called in? And, if you don't like the misguided and uninformed remarks made by Mr. Burns, perhaps boycott his local market. See if that helps.

And statements like this "the federal government is here to help as well." are opinion, not news. Obviously his opinion.

Sorry again for bringing something up that I feel is important. I'm very glad the attitude of posters here isn't representative of the town.

Don't you know that old phrase, "We're the government and we're here to help?"

That's what that was.
